Senate had voted 83-16 in favor of construction of the fence and 500 miles of vehicle barriers, the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the measure.

A major step in the right direction for this country to get it's border policy in order.

Maybe those bricks helped after all!
Score.
You think that is going to stop them?

No, but it will give the border patrol a better shot at them! So hard to get a bead on them bobbing thru the underbrush!

The fence isn't necissarily a physical obsticle as much as it's a pyschological obsticle. Think about it. You've been running for 4 days avoiding MinuteMen and border patrol, you're tired and hungry, THEN you come to a huge fence. If that was me, I'd say time to turn back around.

Shouldn't they put the fence at the border? Meaning you would see the fence before you see minutemen and border patrol.
I'd say if I was that dedicated to have run for 4 days straight, that I'd hop my Mexican arse over that fence anyway!

Haha, yeah that crossed my mind as I was typing that. Depends on how big the fence is?

Um the Minutemen and Border Patrol are on our side of the border. You've got to cross the fence first.

Also, it's just 370 miles. And it's not like it's hidden or something. They'll just cross somewhere else. There's another 1500 miles of unfenced border to choose from.

I wasn't quite thinking about placement of the obsticles as much as I was thinking about the idea itself. So sorry about that.
Still. There's a saying "Anything worth doing is worth doing right" that definitely applies here. 370 miles of fence will be no more effective than the 150 miles of fence we've already got -- i.e. Not at all. It's pointless to even bother unless you're going to do it right. It's one more worthless expenditure of this administration.

You're right though, this is psychological more than physical. It's a complete pander to a portion of the country that believes we need a fence even though a small portion won't actually do a thing.

It sends a message of "Hey, look fellow Republicans! I'm doing something" to people in this country. And a message of "Hey, illegals, we're trying to look like we're doing something to keep you out. So, psst, don't cross right here, go down a few miles and cross there" to the illegals trying to get in.

Bingo; this is yet another half-assed measure brought to you by the US Congress. It's like fighting a fire with a damn water-pistol. My senator will be getting a letter from me on what a waste of taxpayer money this plan is...

Yes, we need a fence, but we need a REAL fence that runs the distance of the border and will be properly patrolled. This just smacks of appeasement and political ass-kissing.

How hard and expensive is it to load Humvee's up with coils of razor-wire and lay the stuff down in a 1/8th mile thick patch all along the border?

Screw a wall; I want an "el cheapo" DMZ.

no, we just need man eating dinosaures patrolling the border.

Exactly.

This is a bad joke of a symbolic sop thrown to the people instead of real comprehensive border and immigration policy.
And they are going to pay illegal immigrants low wages to build it?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Funny because it's likely true!
All they needed was a toll booth like in Blazing Saddles.......

And where will this fence start and end - nothing like a fence in the middle of no where

We don't need a fence, we need a 10-20ft tall concrete wall with automated SeaWhiz guns on it.

That is funny! Maybe our government should contract the labor out to a Mexican construction company to build the fence from their side of the border. At least that would come some people busy in Mexico and not coming across the border! Maybe it will work, the U.S. Government will just have to employ all of the citizens of Mexico and keep them working in Mexico.

Is this fence the answer? I sincerely doubt this will help. I do like the man-eating dinosaur suggestion though! Maybe the chupacabra could be hired out?
elchupacabra.com
Is it the solution to everyone's problems? No. But at least I applaud it for being a step in the right direction. 370 miles should just be the start. We need to stem the tide, and then turn off the faucet altogether. If the 370 miles forces them to more treacherous terrain to cross over, then maybe it deters a few of them. Then once the 370 miles is up, there'd better be plans to extend it the full length over time.

The chupacabra idea, while tempting, may not work. Looks and sounds too much like a chihuahua.
I wonder if it'll be visible from space?

Would you shoot someone if they broke into your home? I sure as hell would. And that is what is happening. Softies such as yourself justs can't bring yourself to that type of rationalize.

Because it's anything but "rational".

If illegal entry is illegal entry, does that mean stealing a piece of candy is the same as stealing a car?

There are different levels of the same type of crime. One can argue that illegals impact you financially, but certainly not to the same degree as someone breaking into your home and certainly not the same psychological trauma.

It's the difference between shooting someone who broke into your home and shooting someone that's trespassing on your land. They both might be illegal, and there's even a small number of people that would agree with both actions, but the number of people who are fine with shooting someone that broke into your house is significantly larger than the number of people that condone shooting trespassers. Believing in one does not necessitate the belief in the other.

Yeah, remember a few months back when that cranky old bastard shot and killed the kid that kept walking across his yard?

Granted, I know the SeaWhiz gun statement was probably at least a little tongue-in-cheek, but shooting to kill is definitely overkill ( pun intended ), now, shooting to maim.......

And that type of attitude is exactly why 3 million keep crossing the border, and will continue. Until Americans put their foot down, Vincente Fox and Co. will continue to flow across our borders.
