This question has probably been asked before, but I haven't seen it. Anyway, just wanted to know which car took your cherry? For me it was a Gold 1989 Grand Am (even had a firebird on the hood) I was 17 and it was the driver's ed car. That was back in day. I didn't learn to drive 5spd. until 1997. I bought a 1998 Civic HX, it was a stick and I couldn't drive it at all. Part of my deal was for the salesman to drive it off the lot to my job. Then my friend drove it home for me from there. I learned 5spd. that night, baptism by fire style. I haven't looked back since. Every car I've had since then, minus an Acura CL, has been 5spd.

1992 Taurus wagon was the first car I ever drove, but I learned stick (became a real driver) on my 'tour.
I "learned" how to drive in a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer/2004 Ford Focus ZX5/2004 Ford Taurus (Vulcan engine ). It was the majority of the cars we had on the driving range, but we could only take the Trailblazers out of the range cause they were the only ones with cheeze hats on them... On my permit I learned to drive in a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT... man that thing is a barrell of fun... Ill even admit that I had fun with an automatic.... but my FIRST car is my 1996 Ford Contour GL. I learned to drive stick in a 1996 Ford Escort LX hatchback... Man that thing was a beast... I loved that car though, I kind of wanted it, minus the fact that it had 130K miles, needed a new starter, but the rest of the car was golden... I didnt really want that 1.9L SOHC... If I had gotten a scort... I would have gotten a GT or an early ZX2 with a 5 speed. I love my contour... and im considering buying a 2000 if I cant find a focus I like...

I actually looked at a 1999 Mercury Mystique friday with 55K miles on it... LOADED, leather, everything, Duratec, Automatic But the car purred, I almost couldnt tell that it was running... They wanted 5500 for it... I ALMOST bought it.

It was a combination of:

1966 Chevy II Nova with a 194 I6 and a powerglide.
1978 Mercury Zephyr with a 3.3L I6 and automatic tranny.

I would sneak them out when I was 14, I don't recall which car was first.

Well there were the tractors and other things I drove too!

TB
mine was a 1992 ford taurus L. i loved that car. it was with us for 10 years, so many memories
Honestly, I learned on a contour. even took my test with the contour. It was my grandma's. years later I bought one

that's 2 people for '92 Taurus - any more takers??
First vehicle I drove had a stick... was a 1967 Chevy C20 with a 383 and 4 speed.

Vehicles I learned to drive in would be my "first" car, a 1981 Caddy Coupe Deville, and my mom's car when I was 14 (which I later owned at 16 for a week or so): 1986 Pontiac 6000LE wagon with a 4 cylinder.

Vehicle I "officially" learned to drive in (for the test also) was the driver's ed 2000 Plymouth Voyager and the 1998ish Hyundai Elantra with a stick.

Two cars:

and
1989 Mustang GT convertable (5.0...duh)
1992 Escort LX...I started driving it in a local highschool's parking lot when I was maybe 13. I later did a few mods to that same car when I turned 16 and got my license.

1979 Mustang (my mom's, she bought it new.) Lackluster 6 cylinder engine, horrible brakes. Guess if I learned to drive well in that car, every other one has been a breeze by comparison.

mainly learned to drive on my fathers 95 Contour SE, but spent equal time driving my mothers 98 Windstar, so I feel very comfortable driving just about anything

then I ended up with a Tempo ...

Learned driving in a brand new 2000 Subaru Forester, 1998 Windstar, and a ~1992 Caravan (the POS owned by my chain-smoking driving instructor). Learned to drive stick in my first-owned car, a 1995 Ford Probe GT, in 2002 (took an involuntary hiatus from the Contour when my sister started driving it).

My mom got rid of her '94 Grand Cherokee primarily because I was getting my drivers' permit, I wish I could have had a chance driving that thing
My sister's 87 Honda Accord LXi hatchback, 5-sp. Learned to drive it before she did, just going back and forth in the driveway when I was 15. When I turned 16, 6 hours of driver's ed in a Fiero. Took my driver's test in a '86 Camry LE. Then moved into my first ride, a '90 Eclipse GS Turbo.

My first turn of a wheel was in a 1995 Dodge Neon Sport. With the killer three-speed auto. Yay!

I took my drivers test in a 1999 Mercury Mystique with the 4 pot because I didn't want to go crazy in the car first dubbed my own, a 1999 Ford Contour Sport.

Later I owned a 1987 Toyota Corolla FX16 for about four months and then a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. I tried to learn stick in my friend's 1995 Ford Ranger for a little bit and then fully learned it in my uncle's 2003 Toyota Matrix XRS. Man that was barrels of fun!

Legally: My moms 1994 Ford Escort LX 5 Speed MTX 1.9L I4, And then my Contour after I got the plates and title to it

Illegally: Joyride in my neighbor's Buick Park Avenue when I was 14 *I serviced it, owner was at work, and my g/f dared me... you dont say chicken out to a girl (Impressed her, so it was all good, no scratches or anything either on the Buick either) *

I told the owner a long time later that I did, she just laughed and said I was crazy
1972 or '03 Chevy Nova. That is all my high school had in small "fleet" at that time. My senior year in high school I was a "student helper" in Drivers Ed, that was fun getting to sit in the car with hot chicks in the little closed course we had on campus.

1965 Ford Pickup with a snow-plow. My Dad let me plow while he ran his front-end-loader tractor. He had contracts to plow the parking lots of a couple of churches and a college. I was 14 years old and felt like a "real" man. I loved having coffee and a late dinner with him at the diner. Got paid for it to!

In Ohio at that time, It was legal to operate farm equipment (to include trucks) at 14.
2001 nissan micra 1.1L stick
1989 Ford Escort LX
I think the first car I ever turned the wheel in was our Chevette when I was really little. Our parents used to let my brother and I take turns sitting on their lap and just steer while they did the pedals down our dirt road (we lived in the STICKS!)
I must have been 5.

When my older brother was learning to drive around 15 for his license, I tagged along (I was around 12-13). We drove the family Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser station wagon. lol

When it was around the time for me to learn for my license, we had an 89 Pontiac Bonneville, which eventually became my car in college. That thing is still going strong, now my younger brother's vehicle. Engine just won't die, although it needs new motor mounts.

My car for drivers ed was a Corsica. I remember there was a lime green Geo Metro that everyone wanted. Looking back, why the hell did we all want to drive that pile of crap??

I learned manual on my GL a couple years ago

1970's Chebby van behind my grandpa's at 14. Also my dad's 74 Bronco. That thing was tight! Still wish he would have kept it. For drivers ed I think we had Lumina's.

That sounds familiar. I used to drive my grand-uncle's Dune Buggy on the back roads of a little town called Errol, NH (Up near Dixville Notch).

However, I practiced driving on the roads in my 86 Dodge Caravan. That was also my first car. Parallel Parking was a breeze because you knew exactly where the rear bumper was. The window goes right to the bumper.

Shortly after, I purchased my first car, a 1981 Chevy Malibu. It was bare, but ran great. 229 3.8L V6

Man, I wish I had that car to work on now. There was so much room under the hood! It was RWD, Automatic, no A/C, and no pass. side mirror. Power Steering that stalled the car if you turned it all the way. It turned like soft butter. Absolutely zero road feel! It did burn oil like a SOB, but that was part of the fun.

On my way home from college my Freshman year, the car caught on fire. I managed to put it out, and keep it running for another year or so. Good Times.

my dads 92 sable 3.8. I had so much fun smoking the tires in that car. Car actually died of a rod knock - go figure. Well, it didn't die, but he got rid of it before it did. Probably had it for almost 2 years with the knock though.

learned stick in a 91 subaru loyale wagon. looked like crap, but it was an awesome car. I beat the piss out of it, and it is still running.

1993 Honda Accord SE
1964 Ford F100. 292 V8 and a granny 4 speed.

Easy to learn stick, all I had to do was let off the clutch, and the truck had enoug torque to start rolling without touching the gas pedal and not stall. Manual drum brakes all around, and no power steering. Lots of memories there.

Started full time driving in an 1982 Chevy El Camino, blew the motor and had it replaced with a small block 400, ballsey compared to the stock 305 without a doubt, and without any weight to it...
Learned to drive stick in something similiar to this...

Then got more prctice with my brothers Yugo. $7.00 to fill up the tank and it lasted me 2 whole weeks...God life was good back then.
learned to drive in my moms old 1992 plymouth voyager AWD minivan....and i learned stick...in my 98.5SVT.....too much car for a beginner to stick..IMHO.....i smoked many a tire

before i learned

95 Mercury Sable, auto 3.0l. The thing's a boat, and currently a sinking one.

The Contour's the third car I've ever had the priveledge to drive. My second was my father's, when he became sick I drove his 91 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sciera (place model name here). Red, square tail lights and an almost vertical rectangular rear window.

Anyways, the thing was about to blow up and I sold it for $800. The only thing that went wrong with it after the sell was leaky windows; in which I actually felt bad because they hadnt leaked when I drove it! Oh well

Prolly part of the city's dumpsters by now

My Drivers Education Company used Contours though!!!
96 taurus and a grand prix in driver's ed.
I took drivers ed in a contour... practced in a GMC Sierra, and a 1995 contour LX, Took my drivers test in the contour LX, and then it became my car. Its like this site was meant for me..lol.

recently I bought a camaro rs(almost paid off!), and now i own a 1992 dodge dakota, magnumV6, 5spd.. first vheicle i ever learned to drive a stick in.. and it was a month before winter when i started driving it... Its an awesome truck to drive.

And the funny thing is that the grandpa truck has a bigger engine than the camaro.. truck has a 3.9L.. camaro has a 3.8L. lol
learned in a 95 Mystique Young American edition, tested in it and drove almost a year before i totaled it...that car was pimp too...SVT pipes lol. Learned stick in my SVT.

Dad would take me out to the country and let me drive his '68 Mustang when I was 13 or 14. My high school driver's ed car was a 1988 Buick Somerset Regal. I took my driver's test in my mom's 1983 Mercury Cougar(on the day I turned 16). My first car was the aforementioned 1968 Mustang.
First learned to drive in an '87 Camaro. It was the "family car" for a while. :-)

Learned to drive stick in my 98 SVT.

Manual tranny when I was 16 in a 72 ford F-250
first car I drove daily was a 1990 topaz
My first car owned 1996 Moon Light Blue Mystique zetec auto (yah it was slow but I loved it)
second viechle a 98 mysque that was a pile of duky
thrid viechle 95 escort MTX slow but were I perfect my manual driving

Now 2002 ZX2, MTX,

keeping my eye open for SVT tour or a cougar after this car.
Started off driving in a '52 Ford F-2 pickup. No power steering or brakes, of course. Unsyncronized 4 speed. After I got better with the truck, Dad let me drive the family car some, it was the "Wurlitzer" 1958 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88. At least it had an automatic and power steering. No radios in either vehicle, as Dad didn't believe in them. I was driving by myself at 12 years old. We lived in the country, and it was unheard of to have cops around the area.

There were 4 cars.

The drivers ed car was a Pontiac 6000 or some piece of GM crap like that. My parents owned a Buick Century Desiel that I drove a little and my car was a 81 Mercury Cougar 4 door (302 ci, BABY!).

All of them were automatics, but I learned how to drive stick on my dad's 88 Civic Si during a trip from Northern Illinois to New York City.
