Recently, Carpepoon and I have been PMing back and forth to decide the best bass set up for me. He talked me in to getting a rear deck sub and I think I would like to get an 8" subwoofer to do the job. My question is, I have a Pioneer GM-X722 amplifier and an Alpine CDA-9811 Head Unit. What sub driver should i get that would be most compatible to the amplifier. So far, i've looked at

MTX

MTX Audio Thunder5500 T5508-04
MTX Audio Thunder5500 T5508-44

and a kicker model, can't remember exact model number, CMB8?

And for those using eDead for their sound damping, how do you like it? What have you used it on? and which version did you use where?

Last question...would it be worth it to use my 4 channel legacy amplifier 4X100 MAX, not sure rms, to power the speakers also? is it possible? would the signal from the head unit be strong enough and how would one go about wiring that if it were/could be done?

Thanks in advance for replys.

Josh, sorry I've been slacking on the PM's. I only get a couple chances to check my computer durring the day for purposes other than work when I'm not out in the field. I guess since this is now a post I'll just post here as well. The kicker speakers you posted in the PM are actually mid-bass drivers, not subwoofers. Any subwoofer will work in a rear deck free-air invironment but when a sub is mounted free air it only requires about 1/4 the power it would typically require if it were in an enclosure.. so you will have to be careful when setting the gain on your amp.
Certain subs are better than others... I'll let the techinical gurus chime in here to let you the specifics of what you should look for.
as for the last question, you have 3 sets of RCA pre-outs on your headunit CDA 9811 correct?. front/rear and sub.. your 4 channel amp would hook up to your front/rear outputs while your sub amplifier would hook up to the sub pre-out.. so you would just need 3 sets of RCA cables... no weak signal worries.

thanks brent...any gurus willing to help out there?

so the MTX Audio Thunder5500 T5508-04 would be a good subwoofer match for the amplifier i would like to use...Pioneer GM-X722? And would i just run one remote wire back from the head unit for 2 amplifiers?

i'll soon be upgrading my rear deck sub to an Eclipse SW8102.4

it's gonna be

thanks for that...

does anybody know if that subwoofer would be suitable with that amplifier...and should i hook up the amp at one or two channels?

the mtx 8" 4500 4ohm model is just fine for a free air rear deck sub. you dont want more than that unless you want to tear the whole rear deck apart to put in support and sound deadening material. as far as the amp i dont know the output of it so it may be to much for the sub but if you want the most power bridge the 2 channels together- posiitive from ch.1 and negative from ch.2. find out the output of your amp before you hook all this up as the mtx 8 only needs 100-150 watts to be optimal

cuz i've got waaayyy too much power going to the TM3.
i've been reading up on the eclipse, it's not only a crazy sub to begin with, it's perfect for my amp.
i've seriously got about double the rms going into the tm3 right now.
not good, the way i listen

if you want i can sell it back to you

I think his amp is 240 x 1 @ 4ohms bridged IIRC
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/05/06 03:20 PM
it is...so i think i'll just hook one channel up to it...thanks guys.
Posted By: 1slosvt Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/05/06 03:24 PM
if its 240X1 bridged at 4 ohm- you dont want to run it on a single channel at 4 ohm or you will only be getting 60 watts to it not enough. you could get a 8 ohm sub and bridge the channels and get 120 watts out of it perfect for that sub. it sounds funny and ghetto but it would be correct

do you still agree that i should bridge it at one channel and turn the gain down or get an 8 ohm sub and bridge the two channels? thanks for your input.

and with that in mind...how do you like this 8 ohm sub by kicker, the Kicker Comp C88 shown here...

You'd want a SVC 4 ohm sub connected to the amp. The amp would be bridged to be 240x1.
Posted By: 1slosvt Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/05/06 11:05 PM
correct that if he wanted to use the full potential of the amp he needs a 4 ohm svc sub but he wants to use a mtx 4500 8" or kicker comp 8" both of which should not be ran with 240 watts rms and he doesnt need or want anything bigger for a free air sub mounted to the back deck
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/06/06 01:39 AM
thanks everybody...1slosvt...the model is a 5500 not 4500 and it's MTX Audio Thunder5500 T5508-04 to be exact...200 watts rms...i know, i know, less for free air, but it's not a 4500. Thanks for your help.

I'll throw my two pennies in and say a JL 8IB4 or Image Dynamics ID8v3 would be great. Those are my opinions.

sorry i mistook the 4500 instead of 5500 both good free air rear deck subs so you should be happy either way
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/06/06 04:48 PM
thanks guys, just purchased the 5500, hoping to install shortly. Any ideas on where to mount the amplifier, it's about 12 by 12, and i think i may have trouble trying to make a shelf come down from the rear deck. My only other thought is on the floor.
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/07/06 02:11 AM
never mind...came up with something...thanks all.
Posted By: GreaseyMonkey Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/07/06 05:53 AM
like you don't tell us what it is...
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/28/06 07:59 PM
Ok guys, finally done with installation...here's a few pictures...
Empty trunk...?

nope...

My audio system sounds a lot better after completely "edeadening" the doors and the trunk, and adding the subwoofer, but I have to say, I had higher expectations for the subwoofer. Maybe too high considering it's only an 8" and in a free-air environment at that. But I can barely hear it with these settings on the amplifier (look at the arrows)...

and the subwoofer level on the head unit almost all the way up. Any suggestions? My only thought is to do what Carpepoon did and build a box around the sub and then mount that to the rear deck.
I also remember somebody else saying their sub eventually "loosened up." Maybe I have to wait for that? BTW...this is my first install, so don't take it to hard on me.
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/28/06 08:29 PM
I also considered cutting the ring open a little bit more in front of the subwoofer, but I don't think that it'd make a difference.

uh...is it just me or does the bass boost and the gain look like it is turned ALL the way down

UH, they are adjustable . If you read the post, it says look at the arrows. I took that picture before I installed the amplifier. Thanks though, that was a big help.

i know
Posted By: J3SVT Re: rear deck subwoofer - 05/29/06 02:11 AM
Nevermind...seemed to be a case of just the sub needing to get loosened up. The more I play with it the better it sounds. TeamSVTour...sorry we had a misunderstanding.
