I really want this box ! The wife is not into boxy cars, wifes, go-fig ha ha ha . What are you looking to get out of it ? The outside looks great, but how does it run. Is it a stick ect . . . Bigger turbo and your moving. -B.

here is the original post:

as many of you know I had my car in a feeler about a month ago. Situations have responded as they should have and I will be getting married soon and I need money not a project car. Specs are very good and a lengthy list of great additions to the car.

Specs:
Off the top of my head:
1982 B21FT
M46+OD
Dale Adj Cam Gear
405 head + head work and 3 angle Valve job
New Valves + guides + minor port matching
K-Cam
White 242
Added Intercooler
GT front end
IPD sways
Jamex Springs
Poly suspension
Side Exhaust
New non fog long slash grill (I dont know the name)
Saab Spoiler
Tethys on Gil Racing Spacers
Blue cloth interior
Power mirrors
All Glass is great
GT front strut braces

Details:
I totally understand everyones concerns about buying a car sight unseen. If your going to bye my car -your going to know everything I know about it, i just dont play games that way.

The places I noticed rust are in the two rust pics - but you can see them up close. Ill take pics when I get home up close. They are very small, small enough I didnt notice them when I got the car. The underside of the hood was not very well prepped when it was sprayed white and has some surface rust coming through. The whole car has been resprayed twice IIRC. It was originally the gt silver color and then the second owner had it painted white. They did a good job - it then recieved a second coat (I think but I cant say for sure) that was not a concours winning one. The car looks good - even up close if thats what your worried about, but the door jambs and stuff look like crap (they didnt mask - its just oversprayed in those areas).
Ill get pics of the interior as well when I get back (BTW WI is really nice!). Its blue cloth interior and the front drivers seat is faded on the window side (noticably I think) - the preveous owner (PO) had crappy purple walmart tint in the car that let the sun fade the interior, that stuff was replaced the second day I had the car with professionally baked on tint. The car is from AZ originally and has only been in UT and snow and stuff for two years. The dash is cracked but it has a fitted dash pad over it. The power mirrors work as do the power windows (sometimes the passenger side is slow dunno why) IIRC everything else is in great shape - OH the radio (base model alpine cd player and pioneer speakers) doesnt work for some unkown reason (I havnt looked into it) the fuse that its on keeps popping. The factory boost guage has been replaced with a VDO behind the stock panel and it looks great. The factory clock was moved down and an A/F autometer was installed up top. I installed this for a reason - read on-
The mechanical: The car runs very well, pulls strong and has no smoke of any color (well- black - more on that later). Trans and rear end strong and in great condition. I dont abuse my cars and I have never abused this one. The oil/filter has been changed every 3 months since I purchased it (last may IIRC). All the fluids were replaced as well, the antifreeze was this really cruddy thick stuff when I got it so I changed that as well, but since I couldnt remove it all - it will take another changing to get rid of all of it.
MAIN PROBLEM: The car runs funny. It behaves perfectly below 7 psi. fun cool and great. above 7 is another story. The car had its boost turned down when I got it so when I got it and changed it all for better I put in colder plugs - jumped the boost and - it fell on its face. Above 7 psi it just refuses to consistently run well. Sometimes it pulls clean and hard and is amazingly fast. other times it coughs and sputters and drops cylinders (the black smoke thing I mentioned before). I have spend I dont know (or want to think of) trying to solve the problem. I have been repeatedly told that a simple swap to MegaSquirt will cure all of my problems. I just dont have the time or remaining money to fix it right now. I am getting married and need to have some $$ in the bank. sorry - back on topic.

The car has had several things since I got it to try to solve this. Since I thought my plugs might have been the culprit I found that the PO had crossthreaded the #4 plug and my 160 head was trash. ok - I contacted Dale in Canada who sent me a 405 BCP and a K cam and his adjustable cam gear and I had a considerable ammount of head/port work done at the same time. ( I think the total build cost was close to $600 with rebuild included) Anywho - I installed the A/F guage to check to see if I was lean or rich with the darn Kjet - well - totally cool and good to go till I hit that 7psi brick wall - the car goes super lean and then super rich. The problem should be REALLY easy to fix if you have someone who knows about Kjet in your area - or by going to MS, but I cant guarente that. All the spark system is new with the exception of the Kjet computer, all the fuel system has been upgraded (except for the actual lines IIRC - but new 740turbo intank pump and new filter and new pressure regulator). The pressure regulator is the third one Ive had in the car - I had replaced the original because someone said it might be hiccoping at 7psi - so I replaced it and the new one lasted about 4 months when it too blew out - fuel was gushing out the bottom of the engine bay - but I never let the car run long enough to figure out WTF was wrong. So I replaced the last one and havnt touched the car since.

As I said before - I want to be more than open with anyone and I dont want there to be any secrets if you want to purchase the car. I sold a really nicely modded mazdaspeed protege to get this 242 because I love them, but I just dont have the time or money to chase Kjet demons that I dont understand.

since then I have taken off the mangled GT grill and fogs and added a full length slash non fogs grill.
The car has been sitting since last feb as I dont need a car and I wanted to sell it and not risk a crash from some moron.
It has a dead battery but should start right up with a charge. The car is not perfect and I want you to know that. any other questions please ask away - I am going to be in WI for the next week

asking $4000 - what I paid for the car before I did all the engine and repair work.
car is located in provo utah

All of the links in your above post are non-functional. Scot I was curious if you have tried replacing the map sensor or checking the TPS for a dead spot. I sounds like the ECU is not calculating it's load correctly which is likely a malfunctioning sensor, not the ECU.
Posted By: Horse_dup1 Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/11/06 06:42 AM
honestly - I havnt checked those, and if I had and they were bad (which they very well could be, since its a hodg podg of Bosch and other sensors for the Kjet adapted to a turbo car, adapted to a non turbo head) I would be out some serious coin for the blasted Bosch sensors, those buggars are around $100+ in most instances.

The main problem is that I or no one I know nows how to diagnose any of these symptoms.

ill check the pics now -

ignor the pics that are pasted from the earlier post - they wont show - but the ones at the top are from today anyway

Scot - if you have a multimeter you can test them. Slip in some paperclips or something into the TPS. Turn the multimeter to v. Slowly turn the throttle blade open. If it goes OL while opening then you have a dead spot. You could also tap some wires into the map sensor and run them to the probes for the mulitmeter in the cabin. Have someone run shotgun and read the output under boost. Again if it goes OL or backwards while building boost, the sensor is shot. Just an idea.

Im not sure if I have any turbo cars in the yard but if I did it could save you some $. Try to get me some part numbers and I will check.

cool guys - I may give it one more shot at life with me. . .
Posted By: Swazo Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/12/06 06:06 AM
I'd bet Chris is right on the money! It runs fine unless you see anything above 7psi? A bad MAP could do exactly what you're getting with ze Brick.
Posted By: Keyser Soze Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/13/06 03:00 AM
Scot - Something just occured to me. Old Hondas used to have a similar problem because there was an O ring around the map sensor that would go bad and boost would leak past it. Something else to look at.
Posted By: Horse_dup1 Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/13/06 04:41 PM
cool - first things first - I dont think the ol Kjet HAS a MAP sensor . . .
Posted By: Horse_dup1 Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/13/06 04:59 PM
just as I thought -

here is the answer to my question from the volvo boards about having a MAP sensor or how it calculates load:

"it doesnt calculate load.

It knows idle and WOT. Other than that it gets engine temp and airflow...."

How does it meter incoming air? Hot wire? Karmen? Flap? Speed Density?

I might have to take it into the volvo dealer - but I HATE doing that. It costs an arm and a leg! and sometimes they cant even figure it out. What makes it worse is that its in SLC!!! (40 min from here)

thats a sweet site!
I have often wondered if I might have a leaking injector . . . I think I might have a set of Orings somewhere . . .

According to the parts warehouse for Volvo there is a turbocharger boost sensor somewhere on the 242.
Posted By: Horse_dup1 Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/13/06 05:57 PM
see - thats the damn problem with them - everyone knows what it should be like - but no one knows how to get it there
Posted By: warmonger_dup1 Re: Volvo - please sell me! - 06/17/06 01:38 PM
I've been following this thread a little bit and of course as you know I really like your car. Anyway I wish you the best of luck with it.

IF you sell it, what are you planning on getting for it?

Oh, BTW, I contacted some of those guys on the 18"Pegs for my car but they wanted too much money with used tires, or wouldn't dismount the old ones.

I'm still in the market for some pegs though I may just get a set of Evolve rims for it later.

I have the 242 listed at $3750 on turbobricks - I need $4000 out of it, but I need cash more than promises.
