OK....I am sick of dealing with service places that try to rip me off.

I need to replace my timing belt. I have never done anything like this before, but I want to try. especially if it'll save me $200!!!! I am pretty handy when I know what I am doing. I just need some coaching.

Is there ANYONE in the NE area with expertise in engine fixin'? Or who at least knows a little more than me about timing belt changes and would like to help one weekend (or weeknight). I'll pay your gas and buy you a nice dinner or something.

I plan on changing the timing belt and water pump. i might even add a UDP while i'm in there. if i do not add a UDP, the existing serp belt is pretty new.

Changing a timing belt is not difficult if you have the right tools and a good manual. You should poll the BB to see if anyone has performed this already on their zetec. I changed the timing belt, water pump, and adjusted the valves on my '89 SHO using the info that I got off the SHOtimes website. I wish that our CEG website had more how to's in the FAQ section.
I would not mind lending a hand if you could get a service manual.

i'm gonna take you up on that offer. i have *some* tools, but no real automotive ones. just a ratchet set and sme screw drivers. most of my real tools are for woodworking.

but i do have a hayes manual. will that be of any help? or do i need a real shop manual? and what tools, exactly. i'll get them this weekend.

You should not need anything more than a good set of metric sockets and a crank puller. I have the crank puller. I dont think that the Hayes manual is going to cut it. Does it mention timing belt replacement? Send a request over the General Forum to see if someone could copy the Zetec timing belt replacement section of there shop manual for you. It is pretty straight forward. You need to be certain that the TDC marks line up. The manual would have more on this.
