Did my bearing on 98 contour and it seems that it had the job done previously as the hub side circlip was missing. Where is the best place to buy the circlip in detroit area?

there seems to have been a change at some point, our 95s have to snap rings, one on either side of the bearing, the 99s only have one ...

btw we thought the same thing with out 99 until we changed a bearing on my 99 ...

This Is Odd! When R&R'ing My Wheel Bearing (Pass Side) On My '98...We Found Only One Ring As Well. Any Body Have Any Insight On This? I Went Ahead And Purchased A Second Ring Through Ford And Installed It, However I'm Still Having Problems With Bearing Noise/Grinding. I'm thinking That Perhaps The Install Of The Second Ring Was Not Called For...But I Don't Know For Sure. AllData Shows An Exploded View Of The Wheelbearing Assembly To Include Two Rings For A '98, But Like I Said Above, I Only Found One During Disassembly.

if the bearing is still making noise then there is a good chance that the bearing was pressed in wrong

iirc my father put a second ring in also on the last one since I had some extra hubs lying around, it didn't cause any unusual noises

Well I put the one that was on the spindle on the hub side as I needed to press the hub in. So I am missing the circlip on the axle side which was the side that it originally was installed on.

Also how much play should you find in the half shaft? Is it possible to pull it out to far? They seem to have slid out during pulling the hub.

Trust Me...Put That Circlip On the Axle Side. If You Still Have A Problem (I.E. Scarred Hub Internally) You'll end Up With Metal Shavings All Over Your ABS Ring And ABS Speed Sensor.

And Yes I Suppose It Is Possible. I Believe It Calls For Somewhere Around The 255-265lbs Of Tq Area. Someone Correct me If I'm Wrong...

I Had The Bearing Proffesionally Pressed, But I'm Sure a Mistake Could've Been Made.

How do you know if the half shaft is good? I don't want to take of the rubber cover if I don't have to?

Does It Pop Or Clunk Around Corners?? If Not Chances Are It's Good. Unless It Was Like Mine A Long Time Ago And Has Been Ground Down To A Fine Powdery/Grease Substance. Honestly It Should Be Fine. If You Squeeze The Boot Firmly You Should Be Able To Feel the CV Joint Inside. Give It Some Firm Pulls Up And Down And Side To Side (Not Out!). It Will Have A Small Amount Of Play In It. If This Is The Case AND you Are Not Getting Any Popping Or Clunking Noises When Turning Corners...Then No Worry's. You Could Always Just Buy A Quaife Or Torsen And Do The Burnout Test. Easiest Way I Know Of To Tell If My CV's Are Busted Or Not!!!

The Axle is just hanging there - but it seems very loose and "stretched" scared it got damaged when removing the hub

I got my snap rings through Village Ford in Dearborn. I had to wait a day for them to come in, but other than that it was simple. I looked everywhere else around with no luck (aside from the dealer).
