How far can you tour go on one tank of gas, the rules are as follows.

1. 1 tank topped off, no gas can for that extra 30 miles... ok a gas can will be needed to get you home after it runs out. BUT NO FUDGING!

2. I drove my car at between 60 and 80 (depending on the traffic. and one 3 mile, shall we say sprited sprint for 3 miles cause this a$$ was like 6" off my back bumper and I couldn't get over. so mainly between 60 & 80

3. you have to drive it until it starts to sputter. now I can drive for another 3 or 4 miles after it starts to sputter, just coaxing it along, but I didn't this time.

REMEBER take a gas can with a gallon or so to get you back to the station.

That's it! anyone wanna take my challenge?

I got 425.7 miles out of my 1 tank of gas. See what you can get.
Posted By: BrApple_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/15/03 12:44 PM
I got 440 on a tank coming back from Pittsburgh the other weekend. Cruise was set at 72 and when I filled up I still had more then a quarter tank, think I put 11 gallons in. That equals 33 miles to the gallon
Posted By: UncommonTour Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/15/03 12:50 PM
damn beat me already that sux

mine has never gotten better than 425
Posted By: Dan Nixon_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/15/03 02:06 PM
Running till out of gas may get you clogged infectors as the tank sludge gets sucked up..

415 miles on 13.2 gal = 31.4 MPG (best highway cruise 75 MPH), I could extraplolate that if I used the full 14.5 gal that I "could" have gone 455 miles if I "felt lucky".
Posted By: sigma Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/15/03 04:39 PM
I could probably push it to almost 475-500 if I wanted to go until the car sputtered, but that's really bad for your car, so I'd rather not find out.

I've gone as far as 400-ish (don't remember the exact number now, but it was right around 400 miles) on 11 gallons before I refueled. That was highway cruise @ 90mph, no speed variation, with the aircon on.
Posted By: Stolon #05 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/15/03 08:24 PM
On average road trips of 80mph speeds, usually will go right around 410-420ish miles when the light comes on. I've gotten up to 450 once before and IIRC, that next fillup it took in right at 13 gallons... You do the math... Let's just say that I've gone to Dallas and back to OKC on one tank of gas... besides, the milage is always steady between 28-32mpg... Beat that Billy!!
Posted By: Midnight_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/15/03 11:25 PM
ok now you have all made me very jealus. I only avg. 300-330 a tank. with mods when before i was avg. 400-460 so thats where i am at. I know thats bad but what do you do. and trick to jack my MPG back up i would gladly take. oh yeah its a Ztec/ATX.
Posted By: sigma Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 12:05 AM
I used to have similar, if not worse gas mileage than that, Midnight. I ran my tank almost dry, put in a bottle of Fuel Treatment and used a bottle of STP Oil Treatment as well. I noticed an immediate increase in gas mileage.

Some people think all that crap is just Snake Oil, but it alsost doubled my mileage.
Posted By: Midnight_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 12:09 AM
tried that i have ran count less bottle of fuel treatment. like B-12 , and sea foam. and lucus. and did the oil treatment thing so far no difrence. i am thinking of have my jets done by the shop again that helped last time i think its been to long. oh well we will see what i gat with my new tranny when i gat it back this weekend i hope.
Posted By: BrApple_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 03:42 AM
I made a mistake in my post, it was 340 when I filled up with just over 1/4 of a tank left, I think that would end up over 400 somewhere

didn't ddavis say he got 505 in another post when his light came on?
Posted By: sigma Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 08:06 AM
I could definently believe 505 if you were travelling at an economical speed without the airconditioner on and the windows closed.

Figure if I got 400 with 11 gallons, that's almost 40MPG. The light doesn't come on for 2 more gallons, that's 480 miles. And I was travelling at 90MPH with the aircon on.

Somewhere around 80MPH seems to be the magic number for fuel efficiency in my limited experience, at least for my car and purportedly a number of others with Zetecs/ATX too. Much higher than normal cars.

well now I'm wondering what else is wrong with my car, I only get 300 max on a good drive. oh well back to the shop
Posted By: Loco4G63 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 06:25 PM
I got over 500 miles on one tank. These cars get good gas mileage on the highway, especially with mods.

the problem is summer weather!!

this last tank is half gone and I hardly have 150 miles

must resist urges to rev engine to redline...
Posted By: bentleywarren_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 09:28 PM
My last fill-up was after 478 miles, and I used 13.5 gallons. Assuming that I had 1.0 gallon still in the tank, I could have theoretically driven 513 miles.
Posted By: The Davis Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/16/03 10:22 PM
If I run it to the light, I usually get between 350 & 370. I get in it constantly, too. That's on 87 - with my chip I have to run 91 and it seems I'll get about the same even though I regularly take 'er up to 7k

28.8 mpg on the last tank
My personal best (I think I had a tailwind ) was 35.5 mpg.

edit: I know I'm in the "Zetec" forum...but I couldn't resist.
Posted By: rollingstash_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/17/03 01:29 AM
When I had my zetec, I got 34.something on the way to and from Chicago. I think it was about 435 miles total when I got to Grand Haven, and I was not sputtering at all.

7200 fuel cutoff.
Posted By: The Davis Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/17/03 05:35 AM
mine's supposed to be 7k, but it actually goes slightly over (like 7100 or 7200). Don't bother me none since I carry decent power all the way there
Posted By: johnny hennessy_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/18/03 02:15 AM
I gotta get me a tach. I go by mph,
max shifting points
1st : 25mph
2nd: 40-45mph
3rd: 60-65mph
4th: 85-90mph

Posted By: BrApple_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/18/03 02:45 AM
I think I can just about pull 30 in 1st and near 80 in 3rd

and that is only near 6k according to my tach since I have never gotten it higher or hit the fuel cut off

but then again I don't relly feel any more power going past 5k so that is normally that max I hit is spirited driving and that is at 80% throttle. Flat out I would come close to 6k orther wise is is about 3to 4k max
Posted By: Loco4G63 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/18/03 03:45 AM
Right now I am at 3/4 of a tank and at 125 miles.

I can get 40 in 1st gear
Posted By: Midnight_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/18/03 07:09 PM
i would like to know. since there are alot of Ztecs running great numbers whats your secrect? because 300-350(on a really good day)per tank cant be right with mods?????? and its better to run 80MPH then 70 ??? oh well i will just deal with it. i still love my car. even if it dosnt have a tranny.
Posted By: The Davis Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/18/03 09:12 PM
Well.......I dunno really. I have some mods, and gas mileage has always stayed pretty constant. I could get about 350-ish / tank when it was new, I still get about 350-ish per tank after 109k miles and a decent increase in power.

My secret? I just drive the hell out of it. It likes it.
Posted By: Stolon #05 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/18/03 09:58 PM
Well i don't have a secret, and i have many mods. I've gotten the same mileage new as i do now w/ almost 100k miles. And I drive the crap out of it also.

I'd have to agree.

My 'Tour hates city driving. Gas mileage is horrible. But on the open highway, pushing it hard up to 90-100MPH (I drive fast), it handles well, purrs like a kitten, and rewards me with great mileage.

So true! I can't wait to get on the road next weekend. Seven hours of fun.

Right now at 1/2 tank with 200 miles.
Posted By: JonsZX2SR_dup1 Re: Gas mileage challenge - 04/22/03 06:22 PM
Well it's not a 'Tour so I am dragging around 200-300 less lbs...

2000 ZX2 S/R with the VCT Zetec. 438 miles on 11.74 gal. most of it on a trip to Maine. Tank was filled to the top of the filler before and after. (37.3 mpg)

203 miles on 5.09 gal. on a round trip to Mass. I am less sure about the accuracyof the fillups on this trip than the one to Maine. (39.9 mpg)

Typically I get 33-35 mpg on highway trips if I keep the speeds below 73 mph and 27-32 mpg in combined local/highway driving.

Once I get above 80 mph the car starts drinking fuel with the fuel consumption dropping below 30 mpg.

lmfao. I know how you feel. On my last couple of trips, I got 420 to the first tank of gas, (flooring it like crazy off of the off ramp and driving on RT 301.

I got 480 to the second tank. I think I used about 14 gallons that time. And I've never seen a gas light come on. Guess its one of the newer things. My gas light came on last time when I ran out of gas. Damn thing said a quarter of a tank, then I went down the hill. lmfao.

Posted By: sigma Re: Gas mileage challenge - 05/03/03 12:16 AM
I drive 100MPH to work everyday too. No Joke. I hit the speed limiter at least once a day.

But I do it on I-35W from Denton to Ft. Worth and back again,

If you see the Moonlight Blue '97 'Tour driving Southbound around 7am, Northbound around 6pm, that's me. Unless your a cop, then that's most definently not me.

I still get over 400 miles to the tank. It's when I drive 20-40 that I get 250 to the tank.

Just to note, I do drive very fast, but I keep 5+ car lengths between me and other cars, always signal, practice lane discipline, and don't get frustrated when I get behind someone actually obeying the law.

I've seen you on the highways before when I used to live in the DFW area and I would tavel though denton!
Posted By: midcoastme Re: Gas mileage challenge - 05/03/03 03:25 AM
I can usually get 100 miles from full to the 3/4 mark, 200 miles to the 1/2 mark and 300 miles to the 1/4 mark.
The best I've ever recorded was a trip to Prince Edward Island, Canada --36.5 mpg which with 14.5 gallons on board would have given a range of 529 miles.
Normal for my driving is only 25-28.

I will get just above three if I have a decent (hour?) freeway trip with speeds 75+. If I stay in the city I never crack 300. I am intrested to see what happens with the commute to my new job. I will be doing almost 100 miles a day, all freeway except about 3 miles.

Though I have pushed it to where I put in just above 13.2 gallons. I was extremely nervous because of how it was pointing to the E (no light). Though I did the same thing a few weeks back and it only took in about 12.5 gallons. Weird.
Posted By: UncommonTour Re: Gas mileage challenge - 05/04/03 10:41 AM
well so far I'm at 225 miles and half a tank with some spirited driving but not much my speedometers off so i think i'm like 5 over what it reads so i've been driving to compensate IE it says 80 but I'm going 75.

So far the plugs and plug wires seem to be improving my mileage, we shall see, i'm going to buy a new fuel can and keep it in the back just in case

Doubtful, but I wouldn't be surprised. My record tank was 505 when the light came on. Average speed was 80-90. Also, 100 miles of that trip were from Phoenix to Flagstaff...about a 3000 ft. elevation change. I could see 550 happening under near-perfect conditions

Yeah, so could I, but 550 on just a bit more than 3/4 of a tank as he said?

That would mean it would get 700 miles on that one tank alone.

That's better mileage than any hybrid car out there gets.

Sounds like you should start with plugs and wires. When was the last time you did those?
Posted By: Mad_Medeiros Re: Gas mileage challenge - 05/08/03 03:00 PM
They were replaced not long ago (the spark plugs)
the wires, I have no idea!
it went back to the shop like 12 times! and they still couldn't fix it, oh and it all started after the timing belt was changed its soo crappy!

Meh!
Posted By: lovemycontour Re: Gas mileage challenge - 07/10/04 10:40 PM
Hmm sounds like a good challange but that's really bad for your fuel pump. I usually wouldn't go under 1/4 tank otherwise the pump will start to heat up since it's not emerged in the gasoline. I usually get 350+ on a full tank [roughly].

I GOT 465 FROM ONE TANK

I got 482 on a tank once. Put 12.2 gallons in, wasn't sputtering either but it was definately on empty.

I reaaaally babied it that tank of gas though, and haven't got as good since.

how many gallons do our tanks hold?
im wondering how many tanks of gas i can do the trip in, since im going back to cleveland in august it was about 750 miles i think.

13.5 or 14.5...not sure which...may even be 14...somewhere in there.

The owner's manual says 14.5 but you can put in more then that. I THINK a few times I put in at least 15-15.5 Gallons, people don't realize that they still have the tube that goes to the fuel tank to fill.
I've put in about 12-13 gallons right at the Empty line, and I know I can go way more then that, I've gone a little past the empty mark (IIRC) and it still was going with no sputter.
Furthest I went on a tank, it was pushing 300MPT, but I was real close to the empty mark. I do mostly city driving.

The Zetecs love to be pushed to the limit, I do with mine all the time (had it for almost 3 years) and it runs great.

Yeah keep on running your cars to empty and watch your fuel pump go out.
