looks much better than mine, where did you get an elbow like that? all the ones i found have a gradual turn?

Looks good. Much better than the resonator that was there.

dam not a bad idea till the streetflight intake comes out...
Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/14/02 02:36 AM
yeah, and it works pretty good too,,, get your filter moved over on top of the fender well and put a little heat shield there.

you might have to send me some how-to's...

Naw, paint it yellow, it should be good for a few extra horsepower

Hey, that looks great! Mad props for the creativity. But uhh, how about giving that poor engine a bath... hehe

Wow, that does look great. Where's you get the elbow, and what was the final price?
Posted By: Loco4G63 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/14/02 04:52 PM
I love all these ideas floating around.
Posted By: dkingofny_dup1 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/14/02 09:21 PM
I am looking at this pic as I write this.
My quess is a 2 inch rubber coupler to a 2 inch 90 degree elbow, connected to a 3 inch pvc coupler. With about three inches of 3 inch pipe out of that.

then that is connected to the flex tube.

But my question is does this really help our cars. Because if so Dam that is cheap.

less then $10 if you talk to the people at store.
Posted By: BK4293_dup1 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 12:24 AM
It's gotta be better than the stock airbox thats for sure. I finally got around to removing that stupid black plastic piece from the fender. Ran a vacuum cleaner hose from the filter to the fog light hole. Not real profesional, but it sounds better.

If you have a Menards where you all live, go there, you can find every thing you need. Here is what I did--->
-2" x 2" Rubber coupler (fastend to the TB and the elbow)
-2" x 2" 90 degree elbow
-2" x 2" pipe connecting elbow to 2" x 3" extension
-2" x 3" Extension connected to the hose(starts at 2" and slants up to 3")

Total: $18.70 (had to buy a 10' x 3" pipe, and a 5'x 2" pipe; mad left-overs)

DO NOT FORGET THE PVC CEMENT!!

If you go to Homedepot or Lowes or any other place like that. They know plumbers. You try to get in touch with one of them. Since you only need a few inches of 2"x2" pipe and most have tons of it laying around their shop. If not the back of their truck. And if you really want to push it. You can ask the to clean and connect the 2x2 to the 2x3. And you don't have to pay for cleaner and cement.

Hey I know a plumber and I'm cheap........

Good idea!

i wish i had spent time to find a plumber (people at my lowes and home depot barely know what pvc is, much less plumbers). I spent a little too much on mine. It helps a lot. If I could have done mine better (like zeteched, i couldn't find exact same stuff though) mine top-end could have been better. Low-end is noticeably better.

What size piping are you guys using?
Posted By: 2.3Turbochicken Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 07:46 AM
Well for the last week i've been playing around with my own intake, I've had a k&n for a while just hooked on at the end, then last week i cut out the part of the beox that comes forward, and then this weekend i started to work on the intake itself. Our tb is 2 5/8 so i looked forever for 2,5 felxible tube and had no luck, so went with 2. This personally doesnt make much sense to me to shrink our inkae size just to have it open up later on. So here is imy current plan, I have a 2" to 3" rubber convertor, the 2 inch goes over the tb so it goes straight to 3 inch right off the tb so i dont have to go down to 2 inch, then i'm going to a local exhaust shop and haveing them mandreal bend the pipe for my, they said 10 buucks for 3 inch, so hopefully by this weekend or next i can get pics up of my intake, so basically i'm planning on going 3 inch all the way to the maf sensor then dremeling out my fender walla dn shoving the kand n up in there and routing some dryer tubing up to it then drillign out the holes to put int eh sensors. After that possibly wrap it in exhaust tape to keep the heat out. So... theres my plan, what do all you guys think??? Critisims or suggestions kindly welcomed.

PLEASE tell me you guys are not using PCV pipe under the hood of your cars.... cause if you are then you don't know that when PVC is heated it lets off a TOXIC gas.... toxic meaning it can kill.

Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 11:53 AM
have u seen pvc actually damage an engine??? i have heard of many people using without damaging the engine. It seems to me that of course it will let off gases, but doesn't get hot enough under the hood to do that.
Posted By: 18psi2300 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 01:39 PM
You guys hear that? Toxic...not to your engine; to you!

Lay out the extra $10-$15 and go have a piece of exhaust pipe custom bent. It would most likely fit under your hood better and it looks better!
Posted By: 18psi2300 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 01:41 PM
Oh yeah, the inside would be smoother, which means more air velocity; which equals more power!

ever touch your engine after it has been running??? I have and if you had a metal intake like me you would know where the intake is it gets hot too. and where the hell did I say it would damage the engine???? it will damage you and any passengers in your car.
Posted By: BK4293_dup1 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 04:14 PM
I like that exaust shop idea.. Or maybe even if you know a good roofer or something, Don't they have to bend gutters?

Start saving your pennies and just get the CTA Intake, hell maybe by the time your done saving the D Davis Street Flight will be out. At least you won't suffocate yourself, especially with winter coming, windows up and heat on

sorrrry, i thought u were like all these other people, (not in zetec forums) saying it will kill engine. I could care less if it's letting a little toxic gas into cab, i never use a/c and our winters are short, so much doesn't get to me anyways. Hopefully it'll be coming off around christmas though.

i just wanna kno. hw. youuu gtott thee rubber 2xx2 to fit on the tb... i tried a 2xxx2 and it was mad hard and wouldnt go on... sorry for bdad typin.. the pvc fumes. are.... kilng me....... argh!!!
Posted By: 18psi2300 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/15/02 11:01 PM
We (96Zetec & I) tried and the 2" does go on, just really, really tight...but the idea of restricting a 2.5" tb into 2" pipe just doesnt make sense.
We prototyped with pvc, took measurments, then returned everything to home depot...Cost to Date $0.00! The exhaust shop we frequent told us it would be about $10-$15 to bend up a 2.5" pipe...
Posted By: Paul Kienitz_dup1 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/16/02 12:17 AM
If you're going to get something custom-bent by an exhaust guy, I think you want 2.5 inch rather than 3 inch, because it has a much smoother path into the TB that way.
Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/16/02 01:04 AM
Best home made would be a gradual reduction from 3 inch to 2.5inch (or whatever TB is). It would have some good pressure pushing in the air. Or if you want the perfect intake just wait for the street flight CAI.
Posted By: Loco4G63 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/16/02 05:33 AM
Just save for the CTA or if not the Street Flight.
Posted By: 2.3Turbochicken Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/16/02 02:30 PM
To Hector or anyone else with a cta, does it start out with 2.5 inch pipe or is it stright to 3" off the tb. I checked and i thought it it was a 3 not a 2.5 but wasnt sure where the change came in exactly.
thanks

3" all the way....
Posted By: Nightrainlane Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/17/02 03:01 AM
Slit the Rubber piece at each end, and fasten to TB with whatever will fit and make a good squeeze. Toxic fumes, blah blah blah.

Posted By: bnoon_dup1 Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/17/02 08:21 PM
PVC fumes kill O2 sensors as well as pollute the air with toxic gases. PVC WILL melt in under hood temps, a friend with a second gen Escort LX can attest to that. Amazing how his hose clamps kept coming loose and the PVC kept changing shape in the summer time.
Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: Pics of my prototype intake - 10/17/02 08:46 PM
it's was an escort,, contours are better... and no need to cut the 2" coupler, just work it on to the TB, really not that hard to do.

For those of you that don't listen to Zetecracing or Brad Noon about the PVC, make sure your heater vents are open so you can get outside fresh air inside the cabin, and your windows closed...and have nice day

yeah, i'll post when i die, i guess it'll have to happen before christmas when i get streetflight CAI.
