I have the new shape mondeo 2.5 V6 non SVT for which there is no aftermarket cat back exhaust.
I can put on headers and y pipe but I will still have 2.25 in piping from cat back, does anyone know if this will limit the horsepower?
I've done the heads as well and I'm puting in SVT cams.

YES, you will be limited unless you make a CUSTOM 2.5" exhaust. That's your next step. Think outside of the "pre-made box"

At what bhp will the 2,25in exhaust be a restriction, if that's a sensible question?

Seems like they get close to 190-200hp (wheels) and then start tapering off big time.

I wish Bassani made a 2.5" catback! I love the sound of mine, but wouldn't mind going a little larger. Maybe a true dual system w/ Bassani mufflers is in my future.

you could always just put a muffler in the resonator's spot and say screw the rest

So a 2.25" exhaust (if done right) should be plenty for my very lightly modded (non-svt) Duratec?

Correct. 2.25" mandrel piping has more then enough flow ability to support most 2.5L engines without restriction.

If you have to choose between two exhaust sizes that are "close" to ideal you are better off going with the smaller size. Velocity beats volume.

Never knew the made an SVT Mondeo????
Posted By: windrain Re: 2.25 in piping - 09/01/05 11:48 AM
Never made a mondeo SVT but they did make a Mondeo ST200, which was the same. They don't make an ST200 mondeo in the new shape tho, so I have to!

It is called an ST220 in the new Mondeo body style.

ST220 is the new 3L engine, with 220 bhp and no secondaries, quite a different beast.

That's what the ST200 became when they changed to the new body style in 2001. (btw the 3L and 2.5L engine can use the same exhaust parts )

There are NO Contour/Mystiques after 2000 so there are NO new body style cars in the US. There are going to be zero aftermarket parts or owners here in the states.

I know you aren't talking about the 97/98 body change because that was when the SVT (early 98) & ST200 (99) came into existence so you seem to have some of your information incorrect.

If your stock exhaust is mandrel 2.25" it's decent if you replace the resonator & muffler with straight through designs.

Like stazi said a better improvement is having a custom MANDREL BENT 2.5" exhaust made.

If it's not mandrel bent it isn't sh~t. PERIOD.

Would a stock exhaust be mandrel bent?

I'm curious as to what information I've got wrong?

Yes, it should be mandrel bent.
