i have a cobra radar, and i'm wonderin where most of you guys mount your..if you have one. i had mine right in the middle of the w/s....dead middle...now i moved it to lower left corner of the w/s. pics or tips of best spots would be great. thanks

I mount my Bel just below the rear view mirror. The suction cups are behind the mirror and the detector hovers below it. If you were in a a car behind me, you'de see what looked like one funky mirror.

haha...nice. i dont know where to keep mine...

I want to mount mine up there.. but I had the wire dangling... is there any way to mount it there and make it look presentable?
Posted By: dartsoccer8 Re: Radar Detector - 07/27/03 11:38 PM
well... i just had that panel under the steerin wheel off while installin my cd player. i have my in the lower left corner, and i just ran the cord down the outside left of the dash and under that steering cover and down to the plug. if you want yours in the middle, and have a long enough cord, you could do the same thing. run the cord down to the bottom of your windshield, then over to the left, and under the wheel. your cord isn't long enough probably. just my $.02

I just ran out and took pictures of my setup, but fototime is down and I can't post them right now. I'll post them when it's back up, and/or I can send them to whoever wants them.

I've spliced the cigarette lighter cable ('coz I need the
12V for other things usually anyways) and ran a (phone)
wire on the pass. side (under the carpet, and pushed behind
the inside windshield rubber trim, all the way up and around
so it came out just above the mirror), plugged it into a
phone cord extender (2 female RJ11 sockets), and glued the
extender to the windshield above the mirror.
My detector has a 3" long power cord now, and I plug it into
the extender.
(it's a V1 and it has a RJ11 shaped power cord).

It was a 10 minute project, and there's no dangling wire
anywhere.

To access the cig. lighter wire you have to remove a center
console side panel (very easy).

Here it is, spliced into the dome light. It's always on, so there are no annoying start-up sequences every time you turn the car on. I think it works pretty good.

whats a good radar detector in the $100ish range?
Posted By: dartsoccer8 Re: Radar Detector - 07/28/03 01:22 AM
i paid 99 bucks...got a 10 dollar rebate that i haven't sent in yet...oops...go to cuircut (sp) city or best buy.
Posted By: beyondloadedSE_dup1 Re: Radar Detector - 07/28/03 03:31 AM
i mount mine pretty much in the middle of my windshield, below my rear view mirror. i want my rador detector to have as much visability out the rear window as possible. it might be a little obstructing to the driver, but it pays not to get caught.
Posted By: thejms Re: Radar Detector - 07/28/03 03:06 PM
I have a vynl(sp) strip on my windshield and w as wondering if that would affect the radar detector? would I have to mount it below the strip? if so I would have to mount mine on the bottom of my windshield or in another location

A useless one.

I have my V1 mounted *above* the rear-view for best range and it clearly sees out the rear window. I've even tested the rear-laser eye with a strong infared remote. I'll take pics if anyone cares to see the setup. The concealed display is mounted at an angle in the lower-left part of the instrument cluster (doesn't look the best there) which somewhat covers the 'low coolant' light, though it's still visible at startup or if that light were to turn on. Everything is wired perm and set to turn on in the "ON" position only.

I wish I had money for a v1
Posted By: KingpinSVT Re: Radar Detector - 07/28/03 08:20 PM
we bought my dad a v1 for his birthday. let me just say that this is the sweetest detector on the market. wow it is amazing. this thing gets signals from very far away. i used it to bring my svt home from dallas and it would give me a beep and i wouldnt see a cop for a couple of min. i love how it also tells you how many signals it gets and wear the signals are coming from. i think i am going to have to buy my own, or steal his when i go back to school.
Posted By: R_G Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 04:05 AM
Got a Whistler for like over 6 years now and hardly plug it in (this sh@it is really useless, unless the cop's radar is in continuous mode. If the cop pulses you, seeing that u r speeding, then you will get a warning signal exactly a faction of a second after your speed was recorded). ... and yes, I have it mounted on the center of the dash. Looks stupid, but as I said I don't really care... If I ever decide on doing something about it, I would save for the in-dash one.
Posted By: TheRock249 Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 04:50 AM
$100??? Dont waste your time!! Those cheap ones are worthless! Most of them will only beep once after the cop has already gotten you. They dont give you any advanced warning, you'd be better off just looking with your own eyes. If you want one, get a good one- Escort Passport 8500, bel 980. These are priced around $300, but well worth the money with much, much longer range.
Posted By: Kevdogg410 Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 04:59 AM
If I am paying 300 I am getting a V1.. bottom line.
Posted By: IonNinja Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 12:00 PM
If I'm paying $300 I want a gps satellite with all the cars on the map, radio listening, 5 mile warnings, and radar scrambler
Posted By: Loco4G63 Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 03:50 PM
I had mine mounted right above the pillar pod and ran the wires along the pillar pod.

Posted By: CrispRide Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 06:25 PM
Damn u people with your radar detectors i wish i could have one but the cops will tear apart your car if he suspects u have one i guess ill just have to stick to outrunning them j/k too many speeding tickets
Posted By: BBContourSVT_dup1 Re: Radar Detector - 07/29/03 06:34 PM
My radar only detects empty parked police cars.
Go figure.

Hey LoCoZ2-

You might considerhaving your detector face a little more horizontal. It will help, since most cops aren't facing underneath your hood. Your rear detection will be effected also.

Just remember to always have at least one car in front of you to set-off the radar detector. Cops these days will pulse cars instead of leaving it on like in the good old days.

BTW I have had a Whistler for 3 years now and and it has saved me from numerous tickets. It only cost me $79 and has pulse detection, rear detection and laser detection and is digital. Got it at HSN
Posted By: Big Daddy Kane Re: Radar Detector - 07/30/03 10:49 PM
i bought a whistler at walmart for $100, and i have never had a speeding ticket with it. it's also got a compass on it, so it's cool. really how i think, if you have a cheap radar detector, you have to use your head and know how to use it. like i'm rarely ever flying down the highway doing 80+mph, unless i know it's rarely frequented by police/sheriff.

like a freind of mine borrowed my radar detector, and he got a speeding ticket, 74 in a 50. he gave it back and was like "what a piece of ****". i think he got a false sense of security. i guess i have myself trained to whenever i hear/see the detector go off, i hit the brakes. it seems like a very good radar detector to me. it picks up cops before i can see them (about 1.5-2 miles away), and a different freind of mine used it going to denver, and he said it sure picked them up far, sometimes he thought it was a false signal and then suprised him when he did see a cop a minute or two later.

whenever i'm in the vicinity of a smaller town, i try to stay within 15 mph of the speed limit, so if i spot a cop, or he radars me, i can slow 5-10mph and be safe. also i've heard from cops themselves that regular K/Ka is only accurate -+9mph. and yes, when a cop does instant on, you are screwed, expensive detector or not. the gun doesn't give off radar signals until they hit the button, and BLAM! you've got a ticket, you have to use your eyes, head, and judgement with a detector to work properly....

i hear a lot of hype about the v1, i would like to have one, but i'm a poo white boai that needs his $$ to fix his car...

and mine is mounted right above the winsheild wipers, i don't notice any difference from my grand prix, where i had it right under the mirror. but this thing definatly has saved me numerous speeding tickets (i have delivered pizza for 3 years, 1 with radar detector, in 5 towns and surrounding areas...).

i have never encountered laser, so i have no idea what to do with that.
Posted By: Kevdogg410 Re: Radar Detector - 07/30/03 11:08 PM
I agree with your completely, some people think with a radar detector they can speed all the time.. A detector is just going to aide in being more aware of what is going. You should ALWAYS keep a visual scan, and if the detector goes off it just keeps you more focused.
Posted By: KingpinSVT Re: Radar Detector - 07/31/03 12:38 AM
laser is instant on, instant off. it scatters very little even when it hits a car in front of you so really NO radar detector can tell you there is laser around unless you are the one being targeted. also laser goes from the cop to you and back in a fraction of a second so when your detector tell you that youve been hit with laser, its basically telling you "you're fu*ked".

Actually it does sit horizontal. I have the hood up.

mine has some weird feature that is supposed to set it off when an emergency vehicle-like an ambulance or fire truck- goes by. It also said in the manual that it even picks up signals from nearby trains, but i sat right in front of one for like 5 minutes and nothing. The emergnecy thing has never gone off either. Has anybody here had any experiences with this?

it depends on where you're at, only certain places actually use the SWS radar. you can find out about SWS at: http://www.safetyradar.com/

here are the transmitters:

I got SWS all the time in Iowa. Not once here in NM.

I wouldnt think so, since radar is a microwave form. However, since laser is a light-form, I would say tint could effect your detector's ability to detect laser

They are all electromagnetic waves, just with different wavelenghts. I believe the laser still uses microwaves, its just a "laser" versus a wide beam as in radar.

I thought light wasnt considered electromagnetic? Light is completely different than electromagnetic waves (such as radar, radio, or TV signals, etc) isn't it?

The emergency vehicle warning system only works in certain area where Emergency Response Vehicles use this warning signal.
