Ok, I am going to put on my sho shop catless pipe this weekend. Does anyone else have this and any problems with check engine lights?

Have you put on MIL's. If so where did you get them.

Thanks

ypipe=NO CELS
Posted By: LBVSVT Re: Any one with y-pipes - 04/19/01 09:27 PM
There are no sensors eliminated, so no CEL's. I highly recommend this mod - you'll notice it as soon as you hit the gas in 1st gear and it'll push you back a bit at about 2000 rpm.

Not this weekend maybe next. My brother will be in town the following weekend. He would like to see the dyno facility

Maybe he will put his four banger Nissan Fronteer truck

Dyno next weekend? Drop me email...

Maybe I can make it if there is extra time.

Where the heck is the luck!!! The bolts after the cat are STUCK! Striped to hell, and a little torch from walmart can't even do justice. I guess I might have to skip class on monday so I can take it to a shop to have the bolts removed.

I finally got it done! I hated almost every second of it! I don't know if I would help some one put it on. Well, I would to help them out, but I will never do that again. I am soo sore from moving underneith the car. My neck, shoulders, arms, brian , I hurt!

Problems I had. Bolts rusted and stuck for life! Took to a shop and the sawed the bolts off between the res and converter. Then they had to blow torch it to get the rest out. It looked like they welded the darn thing in there!

Next problem was mounting the darn thing. I still have an exhaust leak off of the shorter pipe that comes off the headers I think.

Ok, Likes well, I guess it's faster. It's wet out. I think the tach actually climes a little faster. The Exhaust I am questioning changing. I just have a res on my exhaust. It sounds a little raspy but deep, It does not really impress me on the sound.

Any thoughts or questions ask away.

Merlin..

Is everything else stock except the Y?

Are you planning on a Cat-Back setup?
Posted By: Merlin Re: Any one with y-pipes - 04/23/01 03:08 PM
To answer your questions. I have just over 30,200. I have made it through 2 kansas winters also

My exhaust offically now is stock headers with precats, sho y-pipe minus cat, and a aftermarket resenator

That might change also. It all depends on money!!!

I had a muffler shop do a custom Y pipe last week. I insisted the PCM be disconnected so I couldn't do a proper before and after. Should I have expected to lose some bottom end, or was that from deleting the main cat? Anyone else with similiar experience?
Posted By: DemonSVT Re: Any one with y-pipes - 04/23/01 08:39 PM
You shouldn't lose bottom end (unless they used oversized piping??? You don't mention sizes)
But you should expect to lose high rpm (peak) HP if they deleted the half U bend for the back (right) cylinder bank.

Merlin - My car only has 1 winter on it (driven sparingly) and I doubt I could get the 3 front bolts out of the cat. Look like solid rust! That must have been a real bear! The 2 bolts that flange the catback don't seem too bad at all?

I having a heck on a time trying to figure out how to just mate a custom catback to the existing POS cat pipe (has 2 S-bends and is offset for no apparent reason! Wish I had a Ford engineer to beat! ) and then be able to upgrade when I get the headers (they are 2-bolt vs stocks 3-bolt offset setup)

Have you been through a smog check yet? Word from my smog guy ( Calif) is:
if you alter anything from intake to last o2 sensor and do not pass the smog test, the max. amount you have to spend to fix ( now at $475) is waived and you must fix at whatever cost and you are classified as a gross polluter and may lose the vehicle if you cannot fix and pass. jj ( is Oceanside SMOG II ?)

There should be No reason why it wouldn't pass a smog test. (High-flo cat y-pipe) Visual and sniffer

The "Offroad" pipe Merlin installed still should if the engine was sufficiently warm. (sniffer - of course not a visual) However he lives in Kansas where there are no inspections or testing.
Posted By: Merlin Re: Any one with y-pipes - 04/24/01 03:58 AM
That is correct. It is expandable where you can cut pipeing and ad a high flow cat later in use. I still have an exhaust leak. I had some bolts that did not see to mount good, but look solid.

I tell you what I am suspect about the sound of it, but the POWER is noticable. I didn't know what to expect. Here is my guess for my dyno on saturday.

hp 167 tq 159

Well, who knows till saturday when the dyno chasis tells me

OK Merlin,
I think I've asked you before, but now you have a y-pipe. Mine has a cat, but still...do you have a lot of in-cabin drone?
I just bought some 2.5" piping w/ a middle muffler, and I'm keeping the rear (post y-split) stock...for now. I'm super tempted to chop those rear mufflers outta there. Think I'll have too much drone??? Pipe goes on tomorrow morning!

I know nothing about exhaust system so i'm going to ask this quick!..lol
I have a 96 SE MTX V6, I have NO exhaust mods. Can I buy the sho-shop Y pipe and do a direct replacement or do I have to get something else? Not sure if pipe diameter size factors in here as I know there is a diff in Non-svt's to Svt's (2" as apposed to 2.25"). Thanks.

Simon,
You can get a SHO Shop y-pipe. It'll bolt right up to your existing pipe. You'll fully reap all benefits of the y-pipe when you upgrade the rest of your exhaust. You'll definately feel the difference, though, with just a y-pipe.

As far as Drone gones on mine. Drone is really not to different. At 4K letting of the gas there is some drone, but I have not done any long highway miles with it yet to really say YA or NA. The exhaust is lounder, but it doesn't really effect in cabin sound.

Hey, now I got some miles on my car and the reset computer. I have noticed that I don't feel the secondaries open up. My guess is That I have gained a lot more lower end and It makes up for the dip when the secondaries kick in. Any one else notice this with there Sho pieces???

I noticed it when the 73mm MAF went in so the y-pipe made no difference in that respect, but I know what you mean.

I notice the kick-in more. I should say noticed.
I got 2.5" piping with a center muffler put in. Good power gains, all over. I noticed my low end has improved, no kidding. Anyway, it's a little quiet (no drone!) so I might chop those mean ol' rear mufflers.
