i searched and couldnt find anything. seems like a simple mod. i got a glovebox lock from a 96 contour and want to install it in my 98.5. only thing is i cant get it to lock. is there something im missing? i didnt think glovebox locks actually required a key. thought u could open them with mostly anything that would fit in that slot. is this possible? is it possible and how expensive to have the lock cylinder changed to match my key?

Most locks require a key... It would be cheaper and easier to just have a seperate key for the glove box.

If it opens without a key...what's the point of the lock?

i figured any key would work. was like that on one of my old car. u could use a dime. as long as it was a thin object and you could turn the cylinder you were good. figured they all cut costs that way... especially ford

The key used for the glove box is the same one that is used for the trunk on pre 98's. I don't think they'd be cutting corners there.

how easy is it to have the lock cylinder changed to match my key?

They should be able to redo the slugs in the cylinder.

You just replace the handle. It's not TOO secure.

Will probly need a new key also... the 98+ single key is the same shape as the pre98 ignition/door key. The pre98 glovebox/trunk key is a mirrored version of the ignition key...

So pretty much, this is the deal (looking at the tip of the key):

Code:

pre98 ignition key/98+ key:

|
|

pre98 glove box/trunk key:

|
|
