I've found a guy who will fabricate sunroof gears for us for around $25 each and only requires a minimum order of three to retool his equipment. Anyone interested?

ARE YOU KIDDING???!! Please don't mess with my emotions like this!! If you're 100% real...I love you! Are they going to be plastic or metal??? Put me down for 1 or 2 anyway. Even if they're plastic, it's better than the one I have now. If they are plastic, maybe a higher temp or harder composite plastic? We need info!!!

Has he seen the gears yet ? It seems like everybody else that has tried to get somebody to make gears has not been able to get a good price after the peopel have seen the gears.

His name is Jeff Kaplan and her specializes in making BMW speedometor gear replacements. They will be hardened plastic, like the OEM ones. All he needs is an original gear to use as a template. This is his his email(don't laugh)

hamonbagel@yahoo.com

Let me see if I can find his webpage.

Yeah I'd be in too.
Posted By: TexasRealtor Re: Sunroof Gears - 02/13/04 04:23 PM
I've convinced him to make us one prototype for free to see how it works.

i'd be in for 2!
Posted By: ibub_dup1 Re: Sunroof Gears - 02/13/04 06:14 PM
if he builds them, I will buy.
Posted By: Buckshot77_dup1 Re: Sunroof Gears - 02/13/04 06:34 PM
As someone who tried this all ready, I REALLY hope this guy can make them, but everyone I talked to said the same thing until they actually saw the gear. The problem lies in that it is a complex gear with multiple pitches and a mix of straight and worm gears.

I'd be willing to supply the test gear if I can get the free one or even just pay shipping for it. I even have the gear all ready pulled out. I do have to have my gear returned though (it took me a couple months to get it back from the last guy).

Drop me a PM if interested.

I guess I wouldn't care. My originals have lasted 8 years. I just want to be able to replace the gears for under $50, rather than spend $300 on the whole motor.

Very interested. If $25 is correct that would be nice.

Here is what he will make the gears out of.

My motor just went out, but the gears are fine.

The link apparently had a time limit. But the plastic resin can withstand temps of over 300 degrees. The only thing he is concerned about is the amount of torque it will be under.

The guy is getting his new injection machine installed and hope to have up and running this weekend. He has not seen the actual gear, but I have sent him pictures and described it's complexity. He is confident that once he gets the final gear( he expects his first couple to need some tweaking)that he can produce them for $25 + $4 S/H.

ME 2 Please!
Posted By: TexasRealtor Re: Sunroof Gears - 02/20/04 09:39 PM
Jeff Caplan almost has his new resin injection machine going. He needs 1 perfect gear to make the mold. Whoever is willing to mail him one(he says he will overnight back in about a week) will get the initial gear for free. He requests that you send it priority mail or something so that it could be tracked. He is also looking for anyone who may have an extra motor unit so he could test his prototypes for various stresses, torque, heat, etc. Can anyone help? If so, send him an email at hamonbagel@yahoo.com

Wish I could, but mine's already dead and gone. I have been talking to him through email and he told me he didn't need a motor, just a gear. ANYBODY, for the love of God!! Send this man a gear!

Did you PM Buckshot77 ??? If you look above it looked like he had the gear already out and would be willing he just needed you to PM him if you wanted him to do it.

I dont know if I would consider yours to be a perfect gear now since you have had problems with yours anyway.

You have a PM
Posted By: TexasRealtor Re: Sunroof Gears - 02/22/04 05:16 PM
You may also call Jeff in VA at (757)593-3478. Summer is coming, let's get this gear going!!!

Just an FYI, Jeff and I got together on getting the sample so we're good to go. Keep an eye out for pricing and availability.

Thanks,
Rick

There are two reasons the gears go south.

1. Hot plastic worm gear melts the plastic. Might get to be more than 300F in Texas.

2. The tracks that the moonroof rides on get dry and cause excessive torque to be put on the motor/gear.

Every so often, I put some more machine oil in the tracks on mine. The motor seems to run much smoother after I do.

My idea a while back was to make some metal gears. If that guy can make a mold, and inject it with wax, I know they can be made in Bronze (which is fairly cheap). It would be done with the lost wax method, just like jewelry. I just had a hard time with the mold.
