sorry, little throwback to the good ole days of PE.

ok, here's the skinny...

the subframe connectors will cost...................$150 SHIPPED!! thats right, shipped!

including our Canada peeps. unless of course you live in some faraway region that can only be reached by Yak. and of course this is with the understanding that there will be no additional costs beyond basic ground shipping. I will most likely be sending these via UPS Ground. Im guesstimating that a box size of 72"x6"x6" will suffice and the weight will be 30lbs. i am alotting an average cost of $50 per shipment so check that yours will fall at or very near that amount. my zip code is 91311 CA.

the color will be any color you want so long as its raw steel. when you receive it, you may take it to your local powdercoater or spray paint it or wrap it in ostrich skin ala Cribs or whatever!
as of this moment i have not located any company that sells plastic end caps as Stazi suggested. so as of this moment they are not included with the bars. if i can locate some locally or online at a reasonable price for a large quantity, i may include them with bars.

since everyone is busy spending $ on Christmas gifts right now, I will only require a $20 deposit up front to help get our materials. the balance will be due when the bars are done and ready to ship. this is estimated to be around the week following New Years. that should be enough time to scrape the rest together
we plan to make them the week following Christmas. they should all be ready at the same time so dont worry about where you are on the list.

we do need the deposits asap (or i will shoot this ).
You may send your $20 deposit to me in the form of Paypal or via a money order. hopefully no Nigerians will be reading this
for Paypal payments send $20 to its4sale@gmail.com
be SURE to include your full name and address AND your CEG username.

money orders should be sent to:
Steve Medina
9906 Owensmouth Ave #38
Chatsworth, CA 91311

please do not PM me to tell me your payment has been sent (you can do so here if you like). upon receipt of your payment i will make notice in the GB list.

disclaimer: this product is intended for off-road or show purposes only.

for the list, please be sure to include your full name and CEG username.

Can you fill me in on what the final product is going to be like? Are there going to be holes drilled for drainage, tube steel (thickness?), etc.

I know there was a lot of talk about what could be produced, but I would like to know a little more details on what is going to be produced before I commit to buy.

Thanks!
you could drill your own holes...

el padrone! your payment didnt have a username and it said it came from tour96se!
luckily i know who pole is and chris put kingpin in his payment. good boy

people, please put your full name AND your username IN your payment info. i will print these out and ship them according to this info. please do not forget to add names or use five different surnames so i go all with this. im trying to run a tight ship here to keep things as efficient as possible.

as for the holes. there are too many people who want holes or dont want holes. we would rather just let you drill your own holes wherever you want them to be. my welder is from a snowy area and doesnt think its much of an issue. he feels that the air will blow right through pushing out any water/junk that may be inside. also something about if its just sitting, snow isnt going to get inside them (or something like that) and when you drive it the stuff should be aired out. i dont remember all the details of his snowy reasoning...

the finalized product will look like what my bars looked like before i put them on. except for the paint, which i added myself anyways. remember, we're trying to manufacture and send these puppies out as quickly as possible to you guys.

i'm in

M.O. will be sent tomorrow.
Will your Paypal account take credit cards?
Are there any cons on this product. I mean it seems like there are a handful of pros. Surely there has to be one flaw...
It doesnt seem like it, though I guess you might say they are difficult to remove

Besides the increase is stiffness (for handling, jacking the car up, etc.), BlackwidowSVTT reminded me last night that they are a great, protected place to run wire (for rear batteries), nitrous lines, water injection lines, whatever you are runnning from front to back that you dont want to have to worry about road debris killing.

GREAT point
what is the time frame for the group buy, I need to find someone that has a welder or a shop that would install these before I can commit to buy
I'll most likely just be taking mine up to a local muffler shop.

awesome point! i plan to run a trunk mounted battery.

guys, i was just kiddin about the verified Paypal address and yes, it should take credit card payments no problem. my paypal account has no restrictions set to it. (why do people always ask that? is it because people can get payments refunded or something? some sellers wont accept them?)

the only downfall, is possible PITA finding a shop to install, but even if you live in Podunk Michigan you should still have about a thousand shops to inquire.

we're going to probably order a little extra steel for the stragglers but try to get in sooner than later

ps i made a little boo boo by forgetting to mention that we really need a minimum of at least 20 people's deposits to get started, but i dont think that should be a problem based on how many people showed interest.... (crosses fingers..)

this will work.

the cutoff will probably be some time between the 20th and the 24th. payment doesnt need to be received by then, just need to sign up on the list. if you say the deposit is on its way, ill trust ya and final payment isnt due till the bars are done, and even then i can afford to wait an extra week or two if you must scrape the cash together.

livinsvt, i know you said you wanted to wait and see but i cant guarantee there will be any leftovers. youll have 1st dibs if there are. look at the other thread for the prototype and materials. they are basically going to be a cookie-cutter replica of what mine are.

are there any people out there who want to get a set but dont have the $ and would need to wait for a few months?? im trying to gauge if it is a worthy investment to buy extra materials and have a few extra sets lying around.

At a couple of points through the discussion about these subframe connectors, the term liability has been brought up. In what sense would there be liability w/ installing these on our cars? Just curious.
phd2be, I have asked a few performance shops around here if they would be willing to install them and the answers Ive gotten so far are "Of course!" So, I wouldnt worry about it too much. Well, unless you live in an area where only 1 or 2 shops can weld. Then I would just ask those shops.

I dont think anyone here can give a definitive yes or no answer on liability. Just ask the shop. Liability was brought up because Buckshot and Bnoon thought about making these, but just being 2 people with the capabilities vs. a company that does this all the time they decided it could potentially turn out badly IF something were to happen, and IF that person decided to sure, and IF they lost the lawsuit. There are many variables. They didnt want to take the chance.

So just ask. Chances are it wont be a problem.

heheh grabbed the wrong list.. and it didn't quite look right

was hoping i corrected it before anyone noticed
Thanks for the reply. I found a shop today that said they do these on Mustangs all the time. I showed them a pic of what I wanted to have installed and they said they look similar to the Mustang connectors and that "It shouldn't be a problem!" Just waiting approval from wifey

A concern for those that autocross... these will throw you straight into Street Mod. I only do local events... so I'll just stay in STS-Open unless someone contests, but if you do national events (and you're not already in SM), this might be something to re-think.
Also, i never really thought of this, but can you see these under the side skirts?

i've seen a few cars with these... idealy probably not from the same people, but no, couldnt see em... and i have a pretty low vantage point
ok, thats good. I wonder if this is a good time to get a new subframe.. i dont want my failing with this already welded on..

just to let you know just HOW badass these are from a jacking-up POV. i had the car on 3 jackstands today, yet, the entire car was up off the ground!

if i put a floor jack under the subframe connector by any wheel, it will not only lift that corner but after a few pumps it will the lift the corner to the side of it as well. basically, lift the front driver's wheel and a few pumps later the rear drivers wheel will lift off the ground too. the first time you see it i guarantee you you will look like this makes rotating your tires much easier
If you can jack it up from anywhere along the connector, why dont you just put the jack in the middle of the car? More sideskirt clearance, and it lifts the front and back evenly. Once the car is up to the height you want, throw a jackstand under both ends where you normally would and call it a day?

Seems easy as cake!

I didn't want to resurrect the interest thread, so I thought that I would ask here. If this isn't the appropriate spot for this post, let me know. Any chance that these could be handrel bent instead of cut/welded? Reason I ask is due to weld integrity considering full weld penetration in a setup like this is hard to confirm, much less assure AND the point of the weld is approximately where the car naturally flexes, thus applying flex stress on the welds. If this is possible, count me in for 2 sets. If not, I MIGHT be in for a single set. Please let me know. Thanks!

- Trevor
You couldn't get the angle without deforming the tube plastically and that weakens it.

Plus these are mild steel and relatively thin wall (in welding terms). MIG welding them together SHOULD get enough pentration, and could be enhanced if a slight chamfer is given to the butts. We ued to weld box tubing like this all the tim in the mine in worked at, for structural members and never had an issue. Some of the test tooling, for wheel end simulation, at my current place of emplyment is made the same way and it holds up to HUGE lods. I don't think you have a thing to worry about.
Chanfering the butts prior to welding will proivide more than adiquate penetration.

Steve, without trying to sound like a pervert, will the butt joints be camferred? I sure don't want any worries after buying these, trucking them to my muffler shop, having him weld them on, and then wondering if there are going to be problems down the road.

BTW, thanks to fastcougar, Josh, and Stazi for their valuable input.

Paid the deposit.

I will need costs for shipping to Ireland!
Will there be a cut-off amount or date on this and if so what/when ? I'm interested but I am currently juggling a bunch of deals I need to take care of 1st

Steve, without trying to sound like a pervert, will the butt joints be camferred? I sure don't want any worries after buying these, trucking them to my muffler shop, having him weld them on, and then wondering if there are going to be problems down the road.

yes, they will be camferred.

Do these need to be powder coated or can i just spray it with some hi-temp caliper paint?
i would use spray paint. no need for high temp stuff. we dont know buy my guy doing the welding is afraid that the powdercoating may be negatively affected from the extreme temps running through the metal when they are welded on. he wasnt sure about it (not a powdercoater) but said he wouldnt chance it.

most popular group buy.....ever? Good work!
I'm in, will have money order in the mail in next day or two.
I have yet to see a definate cut off date. I WANT to get on this group buy, but I have NO MONEY this month. How many extras you thinkin about making? Or what do I have to do to reserve a spot? I'll probably be able to come up with some cash next couple pay periods

you can cover $20 right, because right now it is just a deposit that you need, balance is due later and I think it has been said there should be a mid January ship date

correct, and as i stated before, when theyre ready to ship, there will be no immediate must-pay-now rush. im trying to make it flexible enough so people can take advantage. the deposit at least helps cover the materials cost, so they will be locked in for you until you can get the rest together. no worries

ok, the official cutoff date will be Monday, January 2. i was going to do it last week but kept forgetting about it. and i wanted to give a little bit of notice. as of this week, it was supposed to be tomorrow but i have been very busy this week and forgot to post it. as long as the $20 deposit is sent by then you'll be fine. after that, the price will be increased for made-to-order requests, or wait for another GB.

the initial prototype set will be cranked out today and hopefully test-fitted as well. dont have time to weld them on, we're just going to line them up on 111R's csvt to make sure the prototype set lines up right. if everything goes according to plan, these will begin to ship next week. i will be out of town for the entire weekend but hopefully this will not slow us down. (if so, maybe by a week).

ill be posting some pics today.

here is the prototype set. since Stazi was a huge help in getting my 3L done, this sucker is his. oh, and dont worry man, we used JB Weld at the joints to make sure no water leaks in.

Posted By: svt4stv Re: Subframe connectors GB PICS are in! - 12/31/05 03:12 PM
im sorry but i completely forgot about this issue until we were re-measuring my connectors. when i had mine installed, there was this constant clunking sound. took us forever to figure out what it was, and about $500 for new halfshalfts installed , just to find out that the exhaust pipe (stock) would swing and hit the driver's side connector during corners. when sitting still, there was inches of room. when mine were installed the hanger back there was "in the way" so the POS shop cut it and moved it up (allowing lots of room for the exhaust to swing). after driving around for a month i ended up with a one inch wide dent in the exhaust (very shallow). i dont know if this would hinder exhaust flow much, if at all, but i wanted to give you guys a heads up. we ended up just putting high-temp radiator hose down there to prevent more banging around and damage. worked like a charm!

we have altered the angle of our connectors ever-so-slightly and they actually fit a little better than mine did. we test fitted them on 111R's E0 yesterday and they fit beautifully. that rear hanger did sit against the connector but i dont think it needs to be relocated. if it can be left there, it will keep the exhaust pipe much tighter and it doesnt look like it will hit at all.

i didnt, unfortunately, take any pics of this until recently which show my new True Bendz piping which is 1/4" thicker than the stock exhaust pipe. no problems with it, since i have the radiator hose piece there.

there is very little wiggle room to move the connectors side to side and back and forth wont solve the problem. so just giving you guys a heads up you may need to do a little, eassssy mod when installing these.

what a $1000 worth of steel looks like

John doing my job of choppin the steel up

John's engineering/autism showing up in the first prototype set. good thing im there to supervise

the first (approx) ten sets are done!! they will be ready to ship hopefully tuesday or wednesday. i will be going in order of the sign up list according to who pays the final balance due of $130. the next group will be ready to ship the following week and should hopefully be more than 10. and yes, Stazi will be at the head of the line because he spent countless hours on the phone with us holding our hands while we figured out the 3L swap

as you can see in the last pic, some will be a little "rough around the edges" but theyre going under the friggen car so dont complain. the welds and fitment are spot on. if we were to make them all show quality then it would take muuuch longer and probably cost more. we're trying to cranks these suckers out to you guys in record time!

sorry guys, i was out of town all weekend for NYs. just got in about an hour ago (8pm, Tues). as of right now, there are less than 10 sets done. i was being optimistic. i left Friday evening with all the pieces cut and ready for John to weld. unfortunately, we had a terrible rain storm all weekend long so he didnt get much of the welding done. he'll be getting to it this week, in the evenings after work. there are a few sets done which will ship to the first people on the list. ill be going to pick up the packaging supplies tomorrow so they may ship tomorrow, but more likely Thursday. ill be sending them via UPS so ill be PMing the receivers their tracking #s and publicly listing who's about to get them.

ill confirm received payments as soon as i can.
i have a ton of emails/pms waiting for me right now not to mention ebay drama to deal with

oh yeah, go ahead and send the $130 balance whenever you can. you never know if you may jump ahead of 20 people who arent ready to send their balance yet for the peeps that live in BFE, ill get you the additional shipping costs in a few days.

SVT4STV,

Thanks again for all your hard work.
I just paypal'd you the balance and put my shipping address in there.

Let us know here on CEG if there is anything we can do to make the process easier. I handle logistics here at my company and when you have a lot of orders going out, it can get tedious.

Thanks again!!!

I also paid in full

I suggest quoting the final list with a remark of who paid in full
Just waiting on a check to clear. . . . .
Hey guys, is there any concern that these will stiffen the car too much, and in the case of a rear-end collision, it will reduce the effectiveness of the 'torque areas' or crumple zones that are meant to absorb the impact in a collision?

i don't have an asnwer to your question but I sure as hell hope they didn't engineer crumple zone in the middle or cabin area of the vehicle

and if this would make the cabin area stiffer and resist crumpling that would be a good thing in my book

I believe the crumple zones are located in the engine bay and trunk areas of the vehicle as I would believe it is the goal to keep the cabin area as intact as possible thus increasing the chance of survival in an acciedent
for front and rear collisions, it shouldnt, I would be more worried about side impact. additional strength to lower frame may transfer more of the collision force upwards. In that case you may alter the crumple zones.

Reguardless, your insurance company may not look kindly on it reguardlessly.

Just tell em "I live my life one quarter mile at a time" or something to that effect.
I was in an accident on Tuesday (chinese food delivery driver went thru stop sign on my green light) and when I was talking to the collision guy about welding in these connectors, he mentioned this concern to me...and a crumple zone would be affected by the install...just thought I would mention it.
Final payment sent. I know I sent my Boulder addy in the notes section, but not sure if I clicked to change it at the end. If you want to PM me to double check thats fine.

today we met with a NECO mod to do a test-fit (they fit). afterwards we started to make more connectors but it got to windy. we were able to bust out ten total. we kinda, sorta did a set today but old man john is easily confused and made two lefts, instead of a left and a right (set #11) the green CEGers below got the go-ahead for shipment tomorrow (if everything goes as planned).

well youre in luck. right after this ceg GB we're setting one up for NECO. you can jump on their bandwagon to get a set
Paid...again
Steve,

I received my tracking number as well. Thanks again for putting this together and shipping it out so efficiently. I hope the NECO group buy goes just as well for you!
Payment sent - can't wait to get these!
ok, now the payments are starting to come in. i have a little question for you guys...

originally, i stated that i would send these out in order of who signed up and sent in their deposit, if they had paid in full. so i receive a few balance payments from people at the top of the list, and one from the bottom. no problem, no other payments received yet. now....i have received more payments, some from near the top and the rest from scattered all over, in no particular order

soooo.....should i send them according to the list's order or according to the order the remaining balance was actually received? if i do the first, then people who paid immediately will be bumped and could have some waiting to do...

ill do a poll to see what you guys think. and if you have any good reasoning, feel free to add it. but lets not start any arguments. i wanted to ship out a LOT of them right away but due to high winds we've been having we've had to cut back on the welding

john busted out two more last night after he got home from work at around 7pm. so, five more will ship tomorrow. three of you know who you are. im about to call UPS to work out friggin Canada's deal!

Shipping order
Ship according to the order of the GB final list
Ship according to receipt of final balance payments

Personally, I'd combine the data and use it that way. If two people pay the balance on the same day but one was ahead of the other for the initial payment, then they get the set first. Otherwise, if you return to the original list only, you'll have people who've paid the whole amount waiting a long time for people early on the list that haven't paid the full amount. Personally, my car is out of commission for the time being, so I don't need them this instant, but I wanted to pay so I could get a set as soon as one is ready and to help fund the whole buy.

Rick
well, i wasnt going to wait until the order followed exactly. this is how i was thinking: payer #50 sends in payment and there are three SCs sitting there unclaimed, so i plan to send one to payer #50. then, payer #5's payment shows up, followed by #17 and #29 (purely hypothetical). so do i keep #50 on target or does he now move down the list to the next available unclaimed SC? if no one pays, he gets lucky and gets his set waay early, if someone pays before his ships out, he gets bumped again..

right now, there are now about 8 people who are listed before payer #50 and have paid in full. payer #50 was the eleventh to pay in full, and about two days before anyone else submitted their balance payments.

i could make it interesting and put everyone's name in a hat and have my daughter draw them out to see who gets the next set

ps rick, my original thinking was basically based on combining the data. but then started getting a little...um...ya know..

I don't even think that this should be up for discussion ... he who pays first get's first! It's like standing in line and then having the guy letting people in choose randomly ... it isn't fair to those of us who have paid in full. We have proverbally "put our money where our mouth is" whereas everyone else has only put a portion forward with no gaurentee that they will pay the balance.

I'm not saying this because I was like one of the top 5 to pay the balance and I'm low on the original list ... I'm in the same boat as Buckshot77 here ... it's going on my Cougar which is still not on my radar for buildup till late spring/early summer. I just don't think it's fair. In fact, it's contrary to everything that we have been taught since kids if you think about it.
which is precisely why i decided to bring this point up Fastcougar.

i agree with your thinking on paid in full should get theirs first, regardless. anywho, we're trying to whip these out as fast as we can to make everyone happy so dont be suprised when you get them as to how raw and unpolished they are. besides, after you install them, only you and your mechanic will see them.
Originally posted by svt4stv:

What he said
Hey steve, Ever figure out what your doing with me? I was the first to pay in full, just wondering if you've sent mine out yet.

Edit: haha, just as i was finished typing this i checked my e-mail and boom, UPS tracking number. Thanks Steve!

on a side note, after checking the Track #... it dosent work..
when youre emailed the tracking # is when i finished inputing your info and printing out your label. the driver will then scan the label when he picks it up tomorrow. so you you should be able to track it sometime tomorrow evening. ps i did the best i could for the international invoice. ups said i didnt "have to" put your ss# or tax id in but mine is required. f' that! im not putting my ss# on the outside of the box! anywho, the customer service lady said it may get through or may get stopped to which theyll call me for the additional info but either way, its on its way.

btw i used $20 as the amount of the sale and the invoice # was the trans # on the paypal deposit notice.
hey, Cool thanks!
first come first serve.
Paid in full...
i get a 2 week "time out" so i guess ill just be sending them but wont be able to speak.
Thats ridiculous... What did you do?
i recommended a nice phone to another ceger who asked for recommendations.

Originally posted by svt4stv:

that is absurd!! Sorry that happend to u man!!
Lol...
So if we need to get in touch with you, what email address would be most convenient
This GB will continue here since Steve is on time out
Paid in full now.
sorry i dont check ceg often enough, will send pmnt this weekend for the remainder!
ug... I wish you continued it at fordcontour.org. I refuse to create an account at contour2 just because two Contour related accounts (here and fco) is more than enough. I'd much rather only have one though.

The timeout is lame though... I see the warning, but I don't see anything else by you that might be offensive to anyone (assuming your initial posts were somehow offensive).
Guys, I ask that there be no more talk about Steve's possible timeout and please keep the thread on target here.

Thanks,
Rick
Mine should be arriving today
Lucky !*#%#^!%$
I'm supposed to have mine tomorrow but they haven't even left Cali yet
OK mine arrived. Too bad Im almost 2000 miles away from them. Oh well, Ill see them Sunday

My roomie said he would open up the box to make sure everything looks OK. Well, really I just want to make sure I didnt get two of one side by accident.

In any case, that was quick and thanks for the hard work!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't two lefts be used if you cut off the "high-rise" and flipped one of the left's over (now becomes a right) and then reweld on the high-rise? These are mirror images of the same thing are they not? On a two dimensional plane like we have here, all you would have to do is make all lefts, take half of them and flip them over and you now have a matching pair. Then simply weld on the "high-rise". I'm not sure, but I would hope that the car is symetrical and the left/right frame rail setup SHOULD be identicle mirror images of one another. I was wondering why svt4stv was saying "john made two lefts again" ... it never clicked with me ... please explain why my solution wouldn't work.
It probably would. He probably meant that he was welding the "riser" on the wrong side. No biggie.
mine are still in sacremento... cant wait to get them in!

ok, im back. my appeal for time commutation was granted
mine are in oregon now
Mine this mine that, oh mine are at my house!
here's the first batch that is already now in transit

here's one of John's loyal customers that came in for a "simple" clutch job. a cleeeeeaaannn stock SHO that traveled all the way from NY! didnt break down even ONCE! i know, hard to believe!

of course, good ole Murhpy's law, the stock clutch replacement the guy bought came with the wrong throwout bearing so now this car is sitting here in pieces all week till the right parts hopefully show up!

sooooo, John needs to finish this stupid clutch job, fix my fuel rail leak AND drive to san diego to buy another friggin sho! hopefully, we can knock out another ten sets which will more than cover the rest of who's pain their balances so far. hopefully the whether will be good

ps in case your contour is not running, or you cant find someone to weld them in for you, or you wreck your car before you even get them.....we have found another use for them so you dont have to toss them out. for you short playas out there, you can use them as the world's sturdiest stilts!

just dont diss to hard on my haircut that i needed or my big gut. and YES, the steel can handle the weight!

OK so I finally got to take a peek at mine when I got in last night. Looks pretty good, I will say they are a lot smaller than I expected. From all the pics I would have guessed 3-4 inches wide, not 2". Dont take this as a complaint, it was just my first impression.

My second impression is that I cant wait to get them welded on !
youll see how it works if you get under the car and line them up. if they were any wider, they wouldnt fit right and would probably be impossible to weld on. and theyd add muuch more weight. the difference an inch makes is a lot! i see how you guys would think that they look wider from my pics though.

ps the weather here sucked arse all weekend. it rained on saturday and yesterday/today have been windy as hell. ...so, the next batch will probably go out later this week. i have 8 sets cut up and ready to go, just need welding. wind and weld dont go together. and yeah, we're doing this outside.

fortunately, i have 8 ready to go and exactly 8 more people have paid up in full. so itll be forthcoming i kinda feel bad like its lagging/taking forever, then i look back at some of the other GBs and i kinda feel like we've been kinda kickin arse

ps installation instructions will be forthcoming. hopefully theyll be emailed to each of you tonight. theyll include the pics i posted so you can print them out for your installer if you want/need to. i just need to do the final edit of the instructions.

steve
Steve, seriously, this is probably the best group buy of all time. Stuff's a rolling!

Agreed, i dont think ive ever seen something take off so fast, probably because noone has done it before.

On a side note, the instructions will help a lot because trying to explain were to weld them would be a little

Like I said, not complaining one bit. Im very greatful for the work you have done. I just expected them to be bigger, they just look that way in the pics. Im wondering now if Ill be able to run my cables inside them

Overall i'm happy with the connectors so far, i will hav ethem up for test-fit this saturday so i can report on that then. My box was thrashed and broken open on both ends, fortunatly theses aren't exactly fragile.

I do have one question, did you chamfer the mating edges prior to welding like was discussed?
yes
Got mine last night!

Thanks,

So what are the final Do's and Dont's of installing these? All I know of right now is to make sure the car is on a level, drive on lift. I just want to make sure I dont get these welded on and tweak something. Anyway. . . .
I actually got mine this past monday night.

Here is a pic of the box:

Here they are opened:

Already showing a bit of rust..

I sprayed them with this stuff immediately after cleaning them. I tried to get inside as well.

Here they are painted and drying. This stuff actually starts out clear and turns the rust black. Hopefully it works for the lifetime of these things.

I am most concerned about rust on these things. Esp. rusting from inside out. I live in the south where there's not a lot of salt BUT there is A LOT of humidity. (Battery terminals beware)

Anyways, its all fun. I can't wait to get them installed for "Offroading" use. Haha.

Thanks again Steve and thanks in advance for soon sending us an email with instructions for our welder.

Not rust...just flash from the welding...not a big deal.
Got mine in today. looks good. i wanna get them painted, ill probably use hi-temp engine paint cause its cheap.

Steve, got the how-to and locations for getting them installed?
Yeah, why the hell didn't we get directions for these things, i don't know what to do!
i'm retarded and spaced this, just sent the remainder, sorry... i need to be on this steenking website more often
Looks good! I'm sure therell soon be a wealth of information based on different experiences welding these on.

What kind of wire should I use in my wire-feed welder? I'm assuming a 115V wire feed welder has sufficient penetration if I take my time with it.
Is there is an extra set available? Can paypal in full today...
money sent!
the install is very basic.
put the car on a drive on lift only! to avoid pre-loading the suspension.
using the pics i posted of my own car the installer can easily see where they go. they pretty much line up. there are not exact points for them to go. there is room to play.

i will have the info sent out tonight. sorry, been very busy this week.

*if youre bored, jack up the car and get under there to see where it lines up. the part where the front and rear bars meet (welded together to form a "v") point outward, towards the outside of the car. the stepped up part goes in the rear. youll see on the body where to line them up. that stepped up part goes up, just aft of where the flat underside of the body ends. check out my pics again that i posted. i suggest you print these pics out in color to give to your installer. its more than i had. all i had was a copy of a copy of a copy of one BAD pic with barely ledgible instructions. but it was that easy for the numbnut who installed them to figure out so....
Got mine in, Looks like i got one of the good pairs cause mine are pretty symmetric.

There being painted RED right now, ill have pics up soon.
Quick Question, does it HAVE to be a drive on lift only? Finding a shop around here is hard enough without trying to find one with a drive on lift..

yea i read that, im just wondering that if i cant find a drive on lift, will another type of lift work?
No.
Just to clarify: So is the idea to have all four wheels hanging freely off the ground when the subframe connectors are welded on or not?

no. defnitely not. all of the vehicle's weight should be sitting on the wheels, just as it normally is.

i have emailed the installation instructions to those who have already received theirs. if anyone would like a copy of these now, email me at svt4stv@gmail.com

so....who will be the FIRST to get them installed???
Thanks for clearing that up for me...

Im trying! I bought a bunch of industrial rustoleum (supposedly it is more resistant to chipping) to get them coated, but the weather here hasnt been cooperating. Its been too cold to paint. . .

Me, Come tommorow or sunday they should be on, i found a shop with a drive on lift that will do them, Should be sweet.
cool. please go out and test them hard all day long, then report in your results!

haha yea, do you think Hi-temp paint will protect it from rust?

Also, ive been told that the welding can melt the carput from the heat..

dont know, but it isnt necessary. they wont be subject to heat, unless you plan on doing railslides around town.

lol. there's enough between the underside of the car and the carpet that it shouldnt be a concern. plus, youre talking about only welding for a few seconds. although my carpet looks like rhino-poo, it wasnt affected by the install.

but if youre really concerned......you could always remove the carpet just to be safe
i mainly ment the paint as a protectant from rust.
I'm leaning towards powder coat....

ya that would ruin the paint.

any chance you can post up the waiting list [I kinda wanna make install arrangements]

Actually I disagree. I too used to think this way until I had an in-depth conversation with Doug Lewis (SHO-God and part owner of Ford Performance Specialists). I am going to use the SHO as an example since that is what our discussion was about, but it direct transfers to this car. If you weld the SFC in as you state, then you are in essence supporting the car in its 'sagged' state. Remember, the cars sag a bit in the middle with their age, and as I said earlier, if you weld them in with the weight on the tires, you are now making the car permanently this way. If you put hte car on a lift with the weight supported by the jack points the car now 'bows' up, and the SFC welded in this way will 'pre-load' the car so once its put back on the ground, the car 'should' be straight again.

I tried finding an article on SHOtimes about this, but for whatever reason the site is down.

Searching SHOforum, here's a blurb from Doug. Not his whole right up
Originally posted by SHO Dude:

BTW, those are some cheezy bars. 1x2 box tubing in 18ga isn't all that strong.

Some info on their affects on FWD cars

We designed and engineered the first subframe connectors for the SHO.

We had been putting subframe connectors on Mustangs for years, but never on anything else.

Back in '97, I thought about subframe connectors and how they'd help the handling in my '89 SHO. It was a ritual of mine when leaving the shop to make the turn out of the parking lot and run the car up to about 4000 and nail the throttle. The car would spin the tires all the way to 7000 and then finally hook up. It was a signature of mine. Then I had the idea about using the subframe connectors on my car. I built a set out of the same stuff we were putting on the Mustangs and welded them to the bottom of my car. After getting them on, I went for a little test drive. I turned out of the parking lot and ran it up to 4000, but when I snapped the throttle to the floor, the car front tires stuck and didn't spin like usual. I thought it was a little strange, but kept going. I instantly felt a difference in the ride. The car was much more responsive to steering inputs and I felt like I was in much more control of the car.

I came back to the shop and started thinking about what I had done. As it turns out, the subframe connectors did quite a lot for the car.

The first thing is traction. When you put power down, the engine wants to roll back to the firewall. The torque vector wants to lift up on the radiator core support and push down on the firewall. This wants to unload the front tires simply by inducing a flex in the chassis. The subframe connectors hold the chassis in check and prevent this flex, so, they help hold the front tires harder on the ground.

Then I looked at the handling. The same flex that lifts the front tires also happens when you load the suspension in a turn. The chassis actually twists as the sway bars work against the turn. With the subframe connectors, the chassis can't twist and they let the sway bars get to do a better job. They make the car feel like it's got a bigger rear bar and thus less understeer and more oversteer.

Some time later, a good friend of mine was in his '93 ATX along with his family. He pulled thru traffic on a busy 3 lane road to get to the center turn lane and go the other direction. What he didn't see was the Pontiac LaBarron heading at him at about 40mph. The LaBarron T-Boned him right in the driver's door. The door gave way as did the rocker panel, but everything stopped at the subframe connector. I'm confident they saved him from a broken hip. He and his family walked away unharmed.

The subframe connectors really impact the handling of the car. Essentially, the stiffer you make the chassis, the better the suspension can do it's job. In this case, our original subframe connectors give you better straight line traction and more turning control and improve the safety in an accident.

I found this - clicky.
per the sho shop, and a few other suspension/alignment places i visited, these must be done on a drive on lift. i know who doug lewis is. john, the guy welding these knows him very well and speaks to him on a weekly basis. ill tell him to call doug to discuss it.
Interesting. I suppose ramps wont work either? I was gonna weld them on as soon as I got them. Might have to wait awhile now

I don't know. Seems like the lift would be in the way, where you'd want to put the SFCs, wouldn't it? Also, if our cars sagged, wouldn't the doors be out of whack?

it can, drive the front up on ramps, jack the rear up, place ramps under the rears, instant redneck drive-on lift

Sweet, never thought about that. Looks like they are going on the first weekend I have them
So... just spent the last hour and a half looking for a place to weld them in... call a shop, they say they can do it, drive across town, and they tell me that they cant..Friggen lame.

Looks like this is going to take a while...
So, what's it gonna be? Drive on lift or not??? Maybe Stazi could chime in on this?
drive on lift, i believe steve knows what he is talking about.

Here's what Stazi had to say about it:

"They're pretty good (the SHO Shop and now svt4stv's copy of them). Yes you DO need to have the car on a drive on lift otherwise how can you get to the frame rails? The regular adjustable lift s pick up the car by the frame rails."

AND:

"Seeing as the car will always drive around with weight on the wheels, you would think that the braces should be welded in with the car in the most "natural" position, i.e. as it would be driving diwn the road, and that would be accomplished by lifting it by the wheels on a DRIVE ON LIFT - not by lifting it by jacking each wheel up seprately. Most exhaust shops use those drive on lifts.

The thought process in the quote you sent me, defies engineering logic."

So, drive on lift, it is.
ok, the next batch of 7 sets will ship out tomorrow. those who will be getting them have been notified already by either UPS or myself.

more to ship out this upcoming Mon/Tues.
Just got my tracking number.
I just wanted to let everyone know... I stood on your connectors last weekend .

....Well, in their raw state. But still!
I too, just got my tracking number...
anyone have these installed yet? me and a buddy are just gonna do them, hopefully soon.

i hope noones done this yet, when you jack up the rear end then slide ramps under it and lower it you're going to be loading the suspension and chassis at an off angle, again the connectors could be welded up in an unnatural state. see the massive ammount of positive camber you have when you lower your car off of jackstands, yet roll it forward and back and it returns to the natural state, i'd say drive on lift is the only way to do this. this is a cheap mod to buy it could be a very expensive mod to screw up.

Are you sure? the car shouldent be that bad as it has space to move...
STOP!!!

notice I used the word REDNECK in that sentance...
can anyone else (steve or stazi) put dome input into whether this is a bad idea?
Based on what I see from my own car after its jacked up, I would say its a bad idea as well. My car doesnt sit right immediately after coming off the jack, the suspension needs some movement to settle. It always sits high after being set back on the ground, so its definitely a bit off.

Just ask yourself this. While finding an installer may be a bit more work, do you realize how much MORE work you are going to have to do if you weld these on when your chassis is tweaked? The connectors will hold it that way. Then you have to cut them off, grind the welds off the car and connectors, and start all over.

Just do it right the first time and save yourself the headache.
That would be easier if there was someone out there with a drive on lift i could use..

I might have to find full length ramps to fit the whole car on... Friggen hell..

Oh come on, unless you live in the sticks its not that hard to find a drive on ramp. I payed $40 for both welded on. Its not that big of a deal. As Kingpin said, do it right so you dont have to pay out the nose later. You got a discounted price for the connecters, now just pay to have them done. -B.

yes i did ken. did you get the UPS email? you should have. yours shipped out today.

the redneck install sounded good but the newly given advice makes sense. although....that's how John put his in. BUT his is a 1st gen SHO and theyre SFCs are only about three feet long (if that). he said his have been just fine, but im not sure that would be something you can easily tell, until down the road, when its possibly too late. hopefully Stazi can chime in on this one

Tourige, although you live in Canada, im assuming you have to have a not-so-nice side of town... that's where i took mine to get done. little "mexican" exhaust shop. they had no problem slapping those puppies on. and for just $60 too. is it possible for you to slip across the border to some shady US town?

PS, John cranked out two more sets tonight after he got home from work. ill package them up tomorrow and try to hunt down a UPS guy to hand them to. the next two peeps should receive an email soon....
Yea, who knows. Ive called around a lot and it seems like most of the shops have rules against it... was gonna be good cause a buddy was gonna do it for free..

Jacking the car is NOT, I repeat NOT, an option.

In order to not tweak the body or suspension prior to welding in the bars you MUST use a drive on lift, like most exhaust shops use (i.e. not a lift that uses arms to lift the car via the frame. Or alternatively you can use an old-school "pit".

If you don't think I know what I am talking about, go jack up the car by the front subframe and you can WATCH the entire front end of the car flex like a damn noodle. Hence when you jack up a car one wheel or side at a time you tweak/twist the body and then welding bars into the frame will "lock" it into place.

I'm sure those of you that have jacked up the car then lowered it have noticed that it'll sit higher than before until you roll out a few feet. This is because the suspension sags and as you lower it back down, either onto the ground or on ramps, it will grip either, and then the whole suspension and uni-body frame will be totally un-natural to the usual position it is driving down the road.

So if you wanna be a dipsh!t and try and do this like a cheap-ass, don't complain when the alignment goes out and it drives weird. Find an exhaust shop with a drive-on lift and have them do it for you.

By using a drive-on lift the suspension will remain in the "driving" attitude and the frame will not be tweaked, so that when the rails are welded on it'll be in the correct position. Anyone that thinks you need to preload the connectors need a slap in the face.

This is a pic of a typical drive-on lift:

stazi, in john's crackhead mind, he has convinced himself that after doing the redneck lift you can then push down on the car to "settle" the car down, as if driving/rolling the car to do this. your 2cents por favor.

anybody else notice the limited production #s on their sets? or just Alex?!

You cannot settle the suspension by bouncing it, not unless you bounce the wheel of the ground to allow it to move outwards into it's equilibrium position.

Im my mind this is NOT a viable way of installing these connectors.

Those SHO guys saying you need to "pre-load" the suspension, are on crack and give no real engineering or viable car dynamics background/explanation to justify their opinion.

well its probably because they arent engineers. Its just the way car forums work, one 'head' guy decided that was the correct method and hence there is no need for a reason why it is the correct way, it just is.

can off-loading your suspension or my redneck method be used properly, of course they can. what are your chances of doing it properly? pretty low.

I had these connectors for my SHO. Sold them because I couls not find anyone locally that had this style lift and weld them on for me.
you guys that are having trouble finding a place to install them, might try a local mustang shop....they do this kind of stuff all the time, since this is one of the first mods alot of mustang guys do...

Sorry to hear bud

On a better note for me, I just got mine welded in. Makes the car feel really solid. I havent really given them a test yet, but just around town you can tell by the lack of squeakes and the solid feel of the body they are working. Also, pulling into a gas station with a raised drive in area, you can really feel how these make the suspension to all of the flexing, instead of what used to be the whole car. The body stays flat (no more creaks either!) and you can really feel the suspension doing a lot more work. Cool!

sorry to hear as well Tyler. dont give up just yet. there has to be a shop that can do it. did you try the shady side of town? or a mustang shop? did they bother to put the car up and take a look at what needs to be done? its so simple. did you show them my pics? try offering to pay extra. i would really hate to see you go through all that trouble to just turn around and get rid of them.

someone throw the bs flag, theres nothing complicated about welding these on, i think your having trouble finding people with welders who arent special ed

so you are telling me that there isn't one single exhaust shop around you?

and if you have gone to an exhaust shop and they have told you they can't weld them, then they should close the shop.

these are easier to weld up than a friggin exhaust!

and here's even a forum thread where someone is asking where they can get their subframe connector and roll cage welded in...

I kind of browsed over this a while ago and only noticed someone saying these help when you jack the car up, which isn't a hobby of mine, so I haven't given this much attention. But now I see that this might offer huge suspension gains, especially since I autocross. I just bought a rear strut brace and rear sway bar trying to stiffen everything up.
Is there a flex problem that hurts our handling on Contours/Cougars that this helps? Can anyone feel the difference in handling from this?
If so, I'll buy anyone's that can't get theirs installed.
#18 arrived today

Thanks a lot Steve for getting these made. One of the best group buys I have been a part of.

GI8U2racing,

This is a great question and hopefully I can answer it for you. I go to church with a gentlman who raced Formula Fords and Mustangs. He did all the suspension and steering work for his teams. He has been out of it for about 4 years now, but I think his advice still stands.

I autocross my contour as well and I was about to do the D2 Coilover group buy and I asked his advice. He told me to hold onto my grand and first go for a front strut brace then subframe connectors. He told me that's the first thing he would do to all the Mustangs they raced.

He told that for the Contour, the subframe connectors would make a big difference in high speed cornering. A few days after this, the Subframe Connector group buy came out. Isn't God cool! Anyway here's why the subframe connectors help:

The contour is a front wheel drive, 4-door car. Because of this, whenever executing turns at high speeds, the car twists about the door pillars in between the front and rear doors. For example, if you make a hard left turn, the front of the car is going to twist to the left, whereas the rear of the car will twist right. This puts most of the grip load on the left front tire and rear right tire (for a left turn) and vice-versa for a right turn. This is not good (for obvious reasons) since you want all tires as planted to the ground as much as possible to get maximum grip and minimum body roll. The connectors essentially prevent this twist since they intersect the plane at which the car twists.

He told me first get the front strut bar, then the subframes, then the coilovers. I ran out of cash after the first two and a battery-relocation project I am still working on. D2 s for next year maybe...

I hope this makes sense

I think you are a little mixed up on weight transfer, it seems backwards to me.

Also front strut bars do little to nothing on this car as the strut towers are right next to the firewall. The rear one does a lot more than the front.

I have noticed a pretty big increase in torsional rigidity after having these installed. Chassis flex seems non-existant now. Even if you think its fine before, after having these you will realize how much your car flexed before.
Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: Late Interest - 02/01/06 04:30 AM
Not saying your buddy doesn't know what he's talking about, but all cars are different. A uni-body contour is quite different from the cars he's used to.

All cars have chassis flex. And yes it's good to improve it. But a front strut tower bar is not even close to being the most effective (if at all effective) suspension part for contours. Subframe connectors would be better than the fstb. But as far as doing either over good springs and struts, I wouldn't go that far at all. Good springs and struts will make the biggest difference, then a bigger rear sway, rear strut tower bar, and so on. But don't forget, the most important thing is tires.

I personally think the shocks and springs do more on this car (as far as overal grip is concerned) than the subframe connectors would...the subframe connectors are going to make your stock suspension work harder, and may actually increase your body roll since the shock and springs will be take the full brunt of the chasis' weight transfer. steering may be more accurate but your overall weight transfer in hard conering will probably overwork your stock suspension...strut tower braces will do the same, but to a lesser degree.

i'll agree with chris on this one..if you've ever had the dash out you'd see why, theres a two inch pipe running from one side of the car to the other on the firewall....i still have a fstb though, they look good

um you need a good deal of power to melt and fuse metal together, sure you will need more power for something thick but i can't see needing anything outradgous for this

A $400 MIG unit with gas lines (shielding - I would never use flux core wire) is more than enough. You are merely welding here and the thickness of this steel is what ... less than 1/4" ... you could Oxy-Ace them with filler rod for that matter ... these people of whom you speak are on crack! I think that is just their excuse to get you to leave

ill take what you said to them and maybe they will change their mind.

Your best bet is find a race car fabricator in your area ... if you can't locate one, go to your local metal/welding supply store and ask around. If anyone is buying welding supplies & metal tubing, it would be the car builders out there. Get one of them to help you out
Posted By: Tourige Re: Late Interest - 02/01/06 11:35 PM
yea, i can find people who have high power welders, none of them have drive on lifts tho...

Never ever use it, or just never use it for this application? I've been using flux core wire for years, more for the convenience than anything else.

Posted By: fastcougar_dup1 Re: Late Interest - 02/02/06 04:56 AM
Flux core wire produces probably the worst quality weld of any welding process due to the spatter. It might penetrate, but not nearly as well as a properly shielded weld.

Errr, everytime I check my status on UPS, it says the delivery date is changed.

I was supposed to receive it today, but it was sent to Mass. for processing instead of CT.

The delivery date has already been pushed once already.

yeah what the hell, the info says it was ready to go on the 27th but they didn't get shipped until the 31st so instead of the 3rd they are coming on the 6th ...

the reason is because when i print out the label ups immediately emails the receiver with notification. but, i print them out at my house and then get over to johns to slap them on the packages who then takes them to work to hand them to the UPS guy. for various reasons this may get delayed at this point; not possible on weekends since UPS not accepting or john not at work, sometimes john is off on some weekdays, sometimes his pos taurus wagon isnt running right so he drives the sho to work which can only hold so many of these things, etc etc.... want excuses? i got a million of em
did you receive an email from UPS when they actually shipped/were accepted by UPS?

some people's were delayed due weather or some other ups misfortune. i just sent a care package to kokopellian and it said there was a "late train delay"

i'm with stupid heh

thanks!!!
Mine just arrived today; looks good, but I thought instructions would be sent through email?
sorry, kinda forgot about that and who i already sent them to. will do today
Thanks.
OK, so after installing my struts yesterday I got a feel for just how much stiffer the car is. I started to jack up the car towards the front of the drivers side. After lifting the front an inch or so, the back starts to raise as much as the front.

After getting a jack stand right behind the front drivers side tire (drivers side rear tire off the ground too, but not trying to raise that one), I started to jack up the other side. This time I placed the jack more towards the middle of the car. When I started to jack the passenger side up, the whole car started to lift off the ground! The back end didnt drop back down until I placed a jack up by the pass. front tire and dropped the jack from the middle of the car!

Hopefully I explained it well, but dang the chassis is so much stiffer. When driving its very noticable as well. The car feels more solid, and you can fell the body moving as one instead of creaking and twisting over bumps and raises.

Pulling into parking lots or driveways with inclined entrances is where you can really notice (coming in at an angle). You may not have noticed before, but after the install you can really tell how much your body twisted to conform with the road. After the install you can really tell the suspension is doing all of the work.

and you wanted to sell them
anyone have pics yet? I'm also curious if SVT skirts would hide them... or can they be seen by someone passing?
you wont see them. if youre at all concerned, paint them flat black for extra insurance.
stv you have email.

Im planning on giving them a spray on undercoating type coat. its rubbery and smells like ass when it goes on (made by 3M I think)
Dont bother paiting them before cause they need to be grinded down before hand (to be welded)

The only problem i had was that the driverside bar hits my exhaust, so now the exhaust sits on the top of the connecter instead of being on the hanger.
Wasnt even considering spraying them before they were on..

um, no i dont

you could always just paint the top flat part of the bar before putting them on. then paint the rest of it afterwards.
Damnit.... was sure I sent it... well try again now.
pretty much everyone should have them either coated, or painted (with good paint)

Yea, thats what happened to mine, the hanger was in the way. Whatever i needed a new hanger cause that one was hanging LOW, now its higher than before
no I still have the stock hanger on the drivers side [I think they may have had to bend it a bit to get clearance].

Is the rail gonna show this much or is it because it's on a Cougar (with no sideskirts)?

And (most importantly since my car already seems to sit low, especially when I try to put a jack under it) from anyone who'se had these installed, have you had any scraping or bottoming out problems with speed bumps, driveways, bad roads, etc????

I'm ready to do these but I just had to ask. (It sucks being anal )

No, they will not hang lower than the sideskirts, so no you cant scrape them or bottom them out.
man jacking the car up is gonna be so much easier with these subframe connectors! cant wait till mine are put in

ya, that will make people happy, inline post my half-meg images.

the lowness of the connectors is deceiving in my photos. to better display them for the photo, that is actually taken at an upwards angle which makes them look alot lower than they are
Tom, I took this today just for you.

The jack is lifting on the SFC. You can still only see it if you bend over or get on all 4s. You can also see my resonator is lower than the SFCs. So if my SFC ever tags anything, Ive got other problems. To see these with the car on the groud you would have to almost get your head under the skirt. Dont worry, you will not hit anything/be able to tell they are there/etc.

mine took over the spot where my exhaust was being held on, I just rest the hanger on the bar now, its higher up anyways, works fine, dosent bang around, sounds great. I have no regrets.
Posted By: DESIGN Re: Late Interest - 03/08/06 03:26 PM
Yep, mine interfers with the hanger under the driver's side rear door. The exhaust shop that put it in just slid the rubber hanger over and it will fit. The only problem is that there is contact. This causes to vibrations that normally would be isolated from the cabin to transfer through. The SFC fit but the noise is an irritant. I plan on seeing what it would take to move that hanger or I will be wrapping that small section of the sfc with rubber to try and insulate it.

I have a ZETEC with stock exhuast.
Posted By: KingpinSVT Re: Late Interest - 03/08/06 04:00 PM
My SFC fit without any modification to the exhaust. I havent heard them touch yet.
Posted By: Pudmunkie Re: Late Interest - 03/08/06 04:51 PM
I have borla too and when I held the subframe connector up my exhaust hanger got in the way too. It wasnt as bad as you make yours sound goonz. I think with a little finagling I (and possibly you should be able to make it fit). It may just be the design of the borla.

What has everyone ended up paying to have them installed?

Ive been getting rediculous quotes
Posted By: KingpinSVT Re: Late Interest - 03/10/06 09:32 PM
$50
Posted By: DESIGN Re: Late Interest - 03/10/06 09:50 PM
50 bucks
What works best is to print the pictures off the forum of the install. Take it to them. They can then see that it is pretty easy. Trying to explain it to them doesn't seem to work out well.

haha. thats the exact same thing i had to do! first quote i got was $300 from a mustang shop then i went to the eastside of town and got them on for $50.

goonz, as i explained in this thread (somewhere) my stock exhaust was banging against the driver's side sfc. as shown in the pic, we simply cut some fat radiator hose and tied it down with some tie straps and then i later added screws. after that, the stock exhaust fit snugly against the hose. no more thunking sound. just tell the guy to do it anyways and when you get home you can easily fix it. if you can mod any part of your car yourself you can definitely do this.

i suggest everyone print out the pics that were posted of my sfcs, in color, and taking them with you when trying to get them installed. it will make things 100000% easier. trying to explain it to your average grease monkey doesnt seem to work too well. just mentioning "theyre like mustang sfcs" doesnt do it (by itself) because as i have recently seen, sfcs for other cars can be quite different in form and install. seeing the good color pics i posted will really help the installer and he'll probably even be thinking to himself, "hey, this looks like an easy $50"

i have received a few payments guys, thanks. i just got back into town at midnight, Friday night, after driving all the way across the country (well almost all the way) in three days! (ill post pics for show and tell tomorrow).

anywho, i need to go over everything tomorrow (today) and see how many we have ready to go or almost ready to go. i will post more info tonight.

thanks everyone for giving me/us the opportunity to make these for you guys and i reallly hope everyone gets the full enjoyment and potential of these things.

I got a quote from a 'speed shop' for 150-240... and "possibly more if I need to drop the gas tank"

Got a quote from a local muffler shop I trust, they want 150!

I was shocked both times, I figured it would be max 70 bucks! I guess ill head over to the southside of Ypsilanti, hopefully it wont cost more than 50 bucks and I wont get robbed!

Funny how I see all the Borla comments after I send my money. Oh well, I have enough confidence in the muffler shop, he'll figure something out.

Dont worry tom, its not too bad... Easy fix. Im almost sure new rubber for the hangers will fix the problem, and lift my exhaust up closer to the outlets where its supposed to be

Any dates as to when the first few of us that paid in full will get ours? I recall you saying that you had some extras sitting at your place. I would just like to get these things installed before spring break is over
Posted By: Tour_Racer00 Re: Late Interest - 03/27/06 04:54 PM
Ok, got mine and already got them painted. Took them to a smaller exhaust shop with $60 in my pocket and he said he needed at least $100. He also said I should get some welding primer because as soon as these are welded on it will start rusting under them and then the welds would rust off and so on. I can only think of places that would probably charge too much now, any ideas?

Im in the same boat as you are. Most shops wont start looking at them until they get 100 bucks. Not to mention they always tack on "and more if we have to touch anything else, like moving exhaust pipes etc."

jerk offs

I was thinking some expanding foam or bondo or something then just smooth and paint the end.

my exhaust shop was concerned about welding it (passenger side) right next to the gastank, he was gonna put some protective layer of somthin upon welding but other then that my connectors are at his place, he said he'd paint them for free and since I need to kinda watch my finances at the moment, I'll be getting back to him shortly for the final install along with new OEM motor mounts

You guys need to visit a properly equipped welding shop. They will have either a drive on lift or a pit so they can easily weld under the car. They will give you top notch quality work and charge you far less than a performance shop.

Welding shops get no respect.

Man, you guys have me worried now! I was planning on getting these installed next week, but now I'm not sure how they will hold up to winter in VT! Although I only drive my car once or twice a month in the winter, that's all it takes for the salt to start attacking!
Posted By: DESIGN Re: Late Interest - 03/29/06 04:54 PM
Calm down these are made very thick steel the rest of your undercarriage will be destroyed before these are. The best prevention would be to seal the ends and the either spray paint them with many coats or go get some of that rubberized undercoating stuff and shoot them with that. Again you should print the pictures and take them to the shop. Also, continue to shop around for a shop that will do them right and for the price you want. There out there. The exhaust shop who did mine saw the pictures, noted the location close to the gas tank, and still only charged me 50 bucks of labor. He even hit it with a coat of spray paint over the welds. I had already painted the rest of the SFCs but taped off the areas that would need to be welded.

That's exactly what I did...worked great, but an FYI is that the paint softened the foam and made it concave. Not a big deal, though.

arrggg... bad idea. that expanding foam stuff retains water. We used some expanding foam to fill some internal caveties for a custom boat hull we made. 2 years after it was last used we decided to "recycle" it so we cut it up to make some modifications, all that foam stuff was just sopping with water... not even sure how it got in there.
Posted By: 99 red SVT Re: Late Interest - 04/01/06 05:19 PM
That sucks. I thought that stuff was supposed to be suitable for outdoor use...two different welders that I spoke to thought it would be a good idea as long as it was coated with something, i.e paint or silicone sealant, once it was trimmed.
Posted By: RawBurt Re: Late Interest - 04/01/06 07:10 PM
Got them installed today. I hit them with about 3 coats of some rust free paint. Then hit the welds afterwards. Oh, i absolutely love them!!!
