Took my '97 into Autozone today and the folks refused to give me the code on the CEL because of some new California Law stating that only certified technicians can check CELs.

Anyone hear of this before? They would not even let me check it my self. Now the cheapest place I have found will charge me $75 just to give me the F***ing codes.

Sounds like something very well possible in the PRK, Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.

onw thing you might want to check on is that your parts guy is a ASE cert mech- I know mine is- so he could anyway - but theres just a thought-

Sounds like a good price. Im gonna have to check that out.
Yeah I tried to get mine read the other day and the guy at autozone told me the same thing. He said that companies were complaining to the goverment because they were losing money not being able to charge money for checking your codes for you.

Yeah how unAmercian of us to do some work ourselves. For the security of the nation we need to make car repair illegal.

What ticks me off is not so much that I might have to pay to get the CEL codes but that I have to do it because of my government required smog check.

If any of you Californians are up to it, I would suggest writing to your local political representatives about this. You shouldn't be forced to have someone (possibly less competent) work on your car.

You never know, you might make a difference...
Sheesh.

Yet another reason why California should just fall off into the Pacific Ocean. You couldn't pay me to live in that Hell hole of a state!

I used to say the same thing 'till they did pay me to live here! (80k, full reloc and nice signing bonus is hard to turn down!)

Anyway - the state itself is nice as far as weather and location, and if I weren't married I'd comment on the ratio of pretty girls to not - but man the people in charge here are all idiots!!!!!!

Goddamn, I had to pay more like $140 for mine, and it's just a basic reader. But it looked like a bargain compared to the fuggers who wanted $70-$90 to pull one code.

This has nothing to do with The People. Call it the Corporations' Republic of California.

Remember, this is the legislature that passed the electric utility "deregulation" that cost the state's power customers $45,000,000,000 without a single opposing vote.

(And if you wonder why people vote for Ralph Nader, note that both Bush and Gore were all in favor of this deregulation, and only Nader warned against it.)

So if you see a law like this passed, don't look for a socialist, look for a lobbyist.

The bottom line is that California is a true wasteland. A monument to all that is possible and all that can go wrong in society. A very sad situation indeed. Too bad it only moves a couple of centimeters into the ocean each year.

The people of the great state of Michigan would never stand for such a law.

I guess the PRK is just not for me.

Cool dome house by the way!

Oh fork you, that's just crass. Despite all corruption and crowding, California is still, in many ways, the greatest of all the states, and is still one of the most naturally blessed chunks of real estate on Earth. (Some others are Hawaii, the Puget Sound area, and New Zealand.) We're still the main people building America's future, both technically and socially, and we're still among the world's most desirable spots to emigrate to. Our politicians may suck, but I can easily name lots of states that are worse off, like New York and Texas and Florida.

It remains to be seen whether Californians will stand for it. I'll be mentioning the matter on my site.

Thanks. If you've dropped by my site, you may have seen some of my photography. 90% of those pictures are of places in California...

I got a Diagtek scanner and its great. Most scanners just read the engine codes, but this thing read the ABS and airbag on my '99. I got tired of buying the cheep tool, now I just get the stuff the pros buy.

I agree, Californian's should "learn to swim" because soon they'll all be living in Arizona bay...
You know in your heart that Californians are more prosperous, more creative, more spiritually advanced, better looking, and more skillful in bed than Americans are.

I wish $40 code readers had been around when I bought mine... they're simple enough so they should have cost that much all along, but at the time, I couldn't find one under $100.

I am glad that you can admit that Californians are not Americans. Perhaps they are part of the Peoples Republic of China?

I'm amazed at how many people there are that get this all wrong.  When the San Andreas fault finally cuts loose, everything east of it is going to sink into the ocean, and this sliver of California is all that'll be left.  I just hope that it happens at a time when all of our politicians are at some gathering in the east.

Well, we are, we just don't always like to admit it. I mean, being an American looks pretty good if you're in China or Bulgaria, but if you have a chance to be a Californian, who would settle for just being an American?
California...

If it matters, California was an independent nation before it became part of the United States. I wonder if that was before or after it fell into the Pacific Ocean?

There is another state that also was an independent nation for a short time before joining the US. It is one of the bigger states. Today it is know as Baja Oklahoma . . . . Oops, I mean Texas. I wonder if that was before or after it fell into the Gulf of Mexico?
