i fill my tank up, and run it to E, and egt about 160-180 miles. i even try not to be heavy on the pedal. its a duratec, 97. i just recently put in a new 02 sensor, could that be the problem?
I got a Duratech too. I probably get 230 miles tops on a full tank of premium (92) in city driving. On the all freeway I've made it past 300. But yeah, you are getting crap for mileage. BTW, it doesn't bother me, but people will probably get pissed at you for cussing in the topic part of a post.
Dan
dang you both are getting shitty gas mileage. I have the duratec and get about 270 miles city...340 highway. I am usually around 260-290 in the city.
Oh yeah and I use regular cheap 87 from Sams Club.
Perhaps the fact that mine is a 95 with almost 80k is the difference? What are we doing wrong?
both of your cars have major problems, my car has 75k on it and I still get 280 on a tank easily. Have your plugs and wires ever been changed? Something is wrong if you only get 230 miles on a 15 gallon tank. Something is majorly fuckedd up if you are getting 180 that is 12 MPG!!!!!!
I've never changed my plugs, assuming those are spark plugs....You mean I can get more than 250 miles per tank???
If you have never changed your plugs (yes spark plugs) and have 80k miles they most likely need to be changed. ford touts that they can go 100k and I just changed mine at 75. The car seems to run fine because you gradually lose your fuel economy. I changed my plugs and wires and gained back 2 mpg. It is a very simple DIY job. Many people think it is impossible to get at the back 3 plugs but it's quite easy. You will just need either a 9 inch extension or a 6 inch and a 3 inch together and a spark plug wrench. should take you less than an hour, maybe an hour if your a first timer, and the plugs will cost you 25 bucks. check the group buy forum for info on ford racing 9mm wires for 50 bucks which is the same as what you would pay at a parts store for shitty 7mm oem wires
How many miles do you have on your fuel filter?
good point, that is probably original too. I want to try cleaning out my UIM and the EGR system but I'm selling the car soon so I may not bother, the mileage is still good and I don't think it will make much of a difference
get an alarm system with a sensor hooked up to the gas cap.
I just changed my fuel filter, but I think I'll do the spark plug thing.
Wires too while youre at it. And make sure you throw in a bottle of injector cleaner at every oil change.
in city driving i usually end up around 220-240 before gassing up again and i drive like a mad man most of the time til i get tired of beating on my car
my girlfriends 2k1 altima get horrendous gas mileage...i haven't figured it out but it gets maybe 18mpg im guessing...she doesnt' get to put it on the freeway very often though while mine is on the freeway at least every other week sometimes more often
change your oil, spark plugs, wires fuel filter...check your tires...throw salt over your left shoulder, etc....
plugs and wires are less than 2 months old (motorcraft plugs) fuel filter is less than 3 months old. i change my oil every 3k miles, anthough i just switched to synthetic.
i also use fuel injector cleaner every 1000-1500 miles. and i was using 93 gas, but now that i dont have a job,ive been using 87 (was getting shitty milage on 93 also)

Start by switcing You plugs/ Wires and Fule Filter.. All those could be causing alot of these concerns...
how do you clean your uim and egr system?
abyone got any ideas as to what i can do?
theres' a how-to on cleaning upper and lower intakes under the parts/mods section *i think*
Take the new 02 sensor back out and check it, you may have messed something up... Switch to 89 or 87 oct gas, that will improve gas mileage also... I noticed a 2 mpg gain just from switching from 93 oct to 89 oct... Replace the plugs, wires, and fuel filter... If that still doesn't help, there's one more thing you can replace.......the car

Sure you ain't got that backwards? I get GREAT gas milage when I run premium (93 octain) about 22.5 mpg compaired to reg gas at ~19mpg all in town!
I changed my plugs and wires and I got 25 more miles per tank. I'm running a completely stock vehicle and getting anywhere from 320-375 miles per tank on 89 octane. That mileage is a mix of city/highway and the occasional pedal-to the metal.
I get about 280-300 in town, that is also with a couple pedal to the metals,
and havn't really been highway driving in her yet but I plan on going to Fargo and back in a couple weeks, bout 290 miles away. Also our engines are designed for 87 octane fuel, which is why you should get better gas milage that way, 92 or 93 octane is harder for the engine to burn.
Your Zetec might be, but the Duratec in the SVT is designed for the higher burn rate 93 octane.
Well yeah, the but the other duratechs should be designed to the same parameters. The svt was made to be a little bit more high performance than our little zetecs and non-svt duratechs, This is what I have been told anyway. my .02
I'm sure I got it right, I may even go to 87 just too see if that helps any...

BRO, YOUR MY HERO... I LOVE YOUR NAME
I only drive on 87 and get 280miles on a tank City Driving. It is an MTX (not automatic) and i don't drive it hard.
Plugs, wires, and gas/air filter are all good sugestions. I have heard that the intake manifold often leaks between upper and lower halves and around the throttle body. While idling, spray some carb cleaner around these "joints" and see if you get any idle speed "flares".
Also, find an AutoZone store and have them "pull the codes" (around here its's a "no charge") to see if there is anything else wrong.
No CEL does NOT always mean "no codes" in KAM !
anyone know what to do? this car is killing me in gas and i smell sulfur quite a bit (only since i changed an 02 sensor
As a # of others have noted, 24-28 mpg in mixed driving seems to be the norm. for the V6. Mine has improved steadily with new plugs, new o2 sensors, K&N OEM air filter, oil & filter change every 3-4K miles, one of those Bomb Mufflers/ebay,actually sounds pretty good so far, like an old Healy6,=less back pressure, and I'm convinced running 90+ gas has helped. I'm curious how long have you had the car, and was your milage ever better?
By the by, the original plugs had 74+K miles and looked like 174K, the O2 sensors had seen better days also. The suggestion to check it out @ the Zone is a good one, unless you have your own code unit, but we wouldn't be having this chat if you did. Seriously it's probably the easiest and cheapest way to answer your question.

95 SE
ya my milage used to be 250-300 miles per tank
can anyone help me, its killing me on gas !
Poop.....Dont drive so much...that will help your mileage or how about trade it in for a civic! LOL Just kidding!
I get around 350 miles on my 99 SE Sport.
Hope you get it fixed!
I've had my 2.5 ATX Mystique for 105,000 miles now, and I commute 100 miles daily to work and usually another 300 miles on weekends, all Interstate driving at 65-70 MPH on cruise control. I've consistently gotten between 28.5 and 31.5 MPG with this car, the worse mileage usually in the summer with the AC on all the time. I always get 300 miles before I fill up, which is at least before a quarter tank.
I've just bought my 95 Mystique V-6 MTX with 146k on it and I get 275 to 325 on a full tank. I've suffered an all time low MPG at 240mi/tank. Kind of makes me miss my 450mi/tank Escort.
At least till I hit the gas pedal and go, go, gooooo.
Although the all time low happened when I was screwing with it because of clogged EGR ports at the throttle and crazy TH because of the IAC. I still get a CEL but the code indicates that it's the TPS (throttle position sensor) which might have contributed to the crazy TH.
the milege seems to ahve gotten worse since my new 02 sensor... maybe ill put the old one back in, even if i egt a cel, i think i might get ebtter milage
