Okay, so here is the problem, lets see if any of you are good...

Smoothy will not rev past 4k anymore, and she has a total loss of power, over 3.5-3.75k. It used to just be a big lull in power at that range but now, it wont even rev past it!!

I replaced the fuel filter, cleaned all intake sensors, but neither seem to have helped...

my next guess is maybe the injectors? or the rev limiter, or the TPS... I also plan on replacin the EGR.

I am pretty lost on this one guys, i have never heard or experienced this problem before. any clues??

You can try a TPS, but I doubt it will help.
How many miles do you have ?

On a 95, I would imaging that by now, it is your catalytic converter.
And since thie problem is getting worse with time, it sounds as if your Cat is loading up big time.

I agree! It sounds a lot like a plugged cat. On the 95s the pre-cats crumble and the dust blows down the exhaust and clogs up the main cat. Ford will cover the cat for 80K miles, after that, it's your money. Ford will be over $400 for a replacement cat, typical muffler shop is about $250. You can mail/web order an aftermarket high-flow cat for about $70 and have it installed for about $50.

If you start hearing some rattling noise in the engine area, it's probably the pre-cat chunks bouncing around in the manifolds. Best to get them 'cleaned' before your engine eats a hunk of brick!

I will let you guys know what it looks like later on... need to get some pics up...

Okay, I need some info on the Zetec Injectors...

1.)How do you know if the injectors are bad? symptoms?

2.)How do I test the Injectors themselves to know if they are workin properly?

3.) Is there a type of continuity check, or ohm level check to see if they are good?

I am rippin smoothy apart and i think the injectors are bad, or goin bad, but i want to be sure... so any help is appreciated...

what about the secondaries? could it be that they are not opening up?

I had this problem with my 96 SE MTX and they said a cable snapped - which wasn't allowing the secondaries to open up.

Can anyone provide more detail in regards to this particular problem that I had? Perhaps it will help smoothy out.

Injectors will fail in one of two ways...

Out of Range - Will give you a CEL light, and a possible misfire.
Leaking - Will cause hard starts, and a lot of BLACK SMOKE at idle.
You will also smell a lot of raw gasoline in the exhaust.
This may cause a CEL as well.

You don't need to test them. the PCM does this every time you start your car.
If you want to clean them, get a bottle of PENZOIL GUMOUT REGANE and put it into a near empty tank and fill it up.
This is the SAFEST stuff you can use, and you will FEEL the difference, two tankfuls after you apply it.
And it lasts for a minimum 6,000 miles.

You problem is not your injectors.

Look elsewhere before you spend $$$ to replace your injectors.

Thanks for the help guys... I will try the cat and see how that works this weekend, then I will clean the injectors, just to do it, its already torn apart.

I still dont really know what it is.

Now, my Dad thinks that the MAF maybe shot?? I dont know, I am kinda lost without a way of knowin where to start, but, a while ago when I used the OBD I scanner, it gave me a lean code... cant remember which one, so maybe its my fuel pump.. is there any way of checkin the pump to see if its good before i replace it?

thanks in advance.

You can monitor the fuel pressure while you are driving with a scanner.
This will tell you if the fuel pump is working correctly.
Do this with a new fuel filter installed.

Do you know where I can get that type of equipment to do that??

I just put on a new filter like 1k miles ago, is that good enough?

You can purchase a scan tool that will work with your PC or laptop from Alex Peper.

Alex Pepr's OBD-2 Scan Tool Site

I dont have OBD II, I have a 95 so I have the OBD I... any words of wisdom for the I??
Posted By: RoadRunner_dup1 Re: 4k rev... - 08/28/02 02:21 AM
I've heard that Alex Peper's software will read OBD-I also.
I can't confirm this, but I have heard it.
You may want to write to Alex and ask.

I will be working on the tour starting this evening, pics to come...

Didnt get to work on the car this weekend, cause my dad is a reject and thought i fixed the car, so he put it all back together while I was gone for the week!!!!

So, now I have to strip it down again, and try to see if it is a loose intake manifold (was told that maybe the problem to)

Pics when i get her stripped again...

Isn't there some sort of "paperclip" trick to read codes from a obd-I system (95 tour)?

If not, the scantool for a OBD-I is dirt cheap...
Posted By: smoothy_dup1 Re: 4k rev... - 09/05/02 12:26 PM
Yeah, I was goin to get that, probably tomorrow, still cant get to the tour tomorrow, but I will probably end up giving up after I tighten down the intake manifold, if that trick dont work, and bring it into ford to see what they say. So right now I am preparing myself to feel a smack in the face when the estimate a price, after they charge me 55$$ an hour to see what they "think" is wrong with it!
Posted By: smoothy_dup1 Re: 4k rev... - 09/07/02 07:23 PM
well, its not the intake manifold, its on there tighter than any other part i have taken off yet. Cant get any pics up yet either, camera is dead.

any other suggestions??

Are you trying to rev the car in Park or Neutral? If so, I believe that there is a governer/limiter on the car that prevents it from revving beyond a certain RPM range.

Geo - That's only on an ATX. His is a Zetex/MTX

Could be the MAF or Fuel pump I think.

At 4k (or the max revs it will do) does it stutter or are the revs smooth?

Bad ignition coil or spark?
