just want to know witch fan is the low speed fan so i can wire a switch to it so i can turn it on . because it does not work on its on. also im going to run the wire from the plug on the fan to the switch will that work or do i need to run it to a power wire first. or will the wire im tapping into have power already

Aren't Zetecs a "one-fan" car? duel speeds but one physical fan?

You're looking for the low-speed fan relay, is what I am assuming.

Oh.. and.. rather than just patching around a problem, you should probably attempt to determine WHY it isn't working.

no my 98 has two fans and one is low and one is high. i took the thing to the shop and thay had no clue as to why it was not coming on. thay could hook up there test stuff and make it come on by comand. thay said it could be anything. thay tested all sensors to not to mention i already replaced all of them with no change.so the next best thing is to bypass them and run it to a switch. got any idea. what to try other than the switch?

Seems I just pointed out recently to someone that the fans are wired in parallel.

That means, there is NO LOW SPEED FAN.

Both fans should operate at the same time and at the same speed.

Have you checked the low speed fan resistor and relay???

Try this linkFan circuit topic It will help you. There is a schematic on page 2.

From Terry, cooling fans are two, two-speed fans. If you look at the circuits when in low speed mode BOTH fans are fed Via the resistor and BOTH go at the slow speed. At high speed BOTH are fed without the resistor in the circuit. Neither is high or low. They are both high & low due to the wiring of the feed. Same goes for the early Zetec single fan...it is two speed due to the resistor in the circuit....to prove it out,if you wish, put a volt meter on each fan feed at low speed BOTH will show reduced voltage
via resistor...turn on the AC and BOTH will read battery volts...

ok i tested the 3and 5 pin on each relay and both fans work does that mean the pcm is not sending the signal to turn them on .

Might have bad ECT sensor. Pretty easy to swap out. About $15.

already replaced it 3 times. and the other one below it to .

Shot wiring.

does that mean the wireharness or just a short wire somewhere.also i went in a small puddel in the driveway 2 nights ago and the car act like it wanted to stall can that be from water hitting a bear wire or a short.

That was most likely from water getting on the belt, and causing it to momentarily slip.

If you pull the ECT connector, and start the car the fan should come on and run continously. I am unsure if it's high or low speed. If it doesn't come on (along with the check engine light) you might indeed have a loose/broken connection to the PCM. There are 2 wires shown in the diagram. Does the turning on the a/c make the fan run? It should (if the a/c is working and it isn't below 45 or so.).

yes when i pull the ect the fans run first in low then in high. do you know what wires or color of the wires that go from the pcm to the fan to turn it on.

When the ECT is pulled the fan goes on because the PCM told it to. If it went low for a second then high, I believe the pcm/fan wiring is OK, both speeds are triggered. The Zetec is supposed to run about to the "a" on "normal" and trip the fan. Does the fan trigger with the a/c? (or is it too cold outside). I recall somebody here said trigger point is 212 water temp which could be read by a fancy OBD scanner.

yes the fan triggers with the a/c turned on . but when i go into town or slow moving trafic it goes up to the L.i have never let it get any hotter than that.so that is when i turn the heat or air on to cool it back down.

The heat will cool the coolant off the a/c because of the fan, will cool the radiator. I now invite Zetec experts to the stand . You probably have not overheated, although you may want to check the waterpump, sometimes they even fail in Zetecs.
