I have a 99 SE V6 ATX, and im just curious if anyone has a rough estimate on the maintenance cost for contours $/km or $/mile.
Ive tried to come up with one on my own, and I keep getting different figures.
Thanks for the help,
Mike

Well, if you assume 12,000 miles in a year, and you change your oil (by a dealer or quick lube place at $30 per) every 3000 miles, then there is $120 for oil. Assume that one of the 30K service points are to be passed in that one year, so figure $300 for that (all fluids, possible brake pads, new filters, minor replacement of broken parts). Now, something big might break: wheel bearings, water pump, catalytic convertor, alternator, fuel pump, audio system head unit, etc, so figure another $500 to $1000 to be safe. Then figure tires will go every other year (performance variety), so add at least $300 (half of a full set of $150 tires).

Simple math says 120 + 300 + 500 + 300 = 1220 / 12000 = a little over 10 cents a mile.

Lots of variables here, of course. You can save money doing things yourself, or your car could be more reliable than the things mentioned above. Or you could be really unlucky and blow a head gasket. It's hard to be exact, but you should be conservative in your estimates instead of assuming for the best.

Well, mine comes out to 5.3 cents per mile. And that is doing a majority of maintenance myself. I currently have 78,300 miles.

PS> That includes me counting the cost of a DMD as maintenance.

Thanks for the info, i appreciate that you didn't include gas!! See I needed the figure for an estimate on the cost of a trip to Florida (From Toronto, Ontario) I'll be taking in May, and the GF and I already have a system for splitting the costs of gas, I had a feeling it was quite a bit, but I just wanted a fair rate to charge her, we're gonna split it in half, so ill chage her $.05-$.07/mile(I dont use those quicky lube places cause they charge too much for mobil 1 ).
Again thanks for the input,
Mike

Total expenses to date are nearing $10000

That's ~26.3 cents per mile. (I NEED to drive it more )

Take out the fuel and it's under $7000.

Down to only ~18.4 cents per mile. whew...

Take out the mods and it's down to around $2000. (includes tires, struts, & springs though)

That's a mere ~5.2 cents per mile and I don't drive it much in the winter.

Damn I shouldn't have done this. That's a hell of a lot of money to spend on mods...
Actually that includes about $1000 for tuning equipment too I suppose. (laptop, wideband, TwEECer, OBD-II software)

Okay, I realize I'm a bit "over the edge" (anal?) when it comes to my vehicles. I've always kept a log to track fuel, maintenance, mpg, etc.

The Mystique, as of Jan 31:

Since purchasing it used in April 1999 I've logged 63,061 miles.
Overall average of 28.4 MPG.
Bought 2187.0 gallons of gasoline at a cost of $3,067.49.
Spent $1,971.20 in repairs including tires, oil changes, etc.

Total of $5,038.69 over 63,061 miles = $0.08 per mile.

For maintenance alone it comes to just over $0.03 per mile.
