For sheets & giggles I checked this out. Fill it out. The trade in value is at the bottom as you check options.

$1655.00 is what mine is "worth" I'll never trade it however.

the trade in value is pretty inaccurate though. if you sell it yourself, you will get much more.
tade in: 2,300
sell myself: 4,870

doesnt really matter though b/c we're not going to be selling it

While private sale > trade-in is generally very true... you really think you could get $4,870 for a 1996 4-cyl? Maybe if you were a car dealer, and even then it would be as stretch. when cars like ours get these old (96, 95 like mine) the books don't mean much. I've got a 95 6-cyl with every option and some mods, and "only" 78K miles - but when I go to sell it myself in the spring, I'll probably be happy to get $2K for it.

the whole thing with Kelly, anyway, is that NADA is the dealer bible. take a look at what cars like this fetch on e-bay and in newspaper classifieds, and trust me, it's nowhere near $5K...

oh yeah, i definitely agree with you. i was just pointing out that you usually get more selling it yourself.
Our 1996 auto 4-cyl netted $3K selling it ourselves, and took, oh, a month and a half to sell.

My '95LX (V6, auto) = $1150 trade value. $4270 selling it myself. That's not too bad. I didn't pay that much for it when I bought it, and since then it's got new wheels, tranny, exhaust, front brakes, radiator...the list goes on.
$19,050

Trade in $3,205
Private party - $7,395

I dont think I would get that much for it trading it in or selling it myself. Dealers tend to want to avoid those high mileage cars like mine and people are the same way.

The only way I would get close to that tradein price is if I way overpaid for a new car and traded mine in.

Posted By: Lee K Re: Kelly's Blue Book value of your car - 01/17/04 03:46 AM
I find that the KBB numbers are actually a little optimistic when it comes to trade in values. Face it, a dealer really doesn't want an older high mileage car on their lot. More often than not, they will simply wholesale it to an auction company. Where there is money to be made is in two or three year old cars coming off leases with less than 30K on them. This is the niche that Carmax and others play in, and they are doing pretty well.

Sometimes a dealer will give you what seems to be a pretty good deal for your used car, but that simply means that you are paying for it with less money off of MSRP for the new vehicle that you are buying. Typically, the dealer will bet on a low trade in value because they know that the majority of buyers are anxious to get rid of the car, rather than deal with the hassle of private sale.

To get the maximum value for your used car, the only way to go is to sell it yourself. You will come out thousands ahead. As our Contours age, the prime target audience for them are teenagers that are just learning to drive and need a car separate from the family's vehicles. They don't have a huge amount of money to spend, but parents like to think of the Contour as a relatively safe and reliable vehicle that can be purchased inexpensively. The SVT versions appeal to the budding sports sedan enthusiats who want performance but don't have the dough for used Acrua, BMW and Lexus models.

I worked at a Saturn dealer this past summer as a sales consultant and they are pretty good about giving fair value for your trade-in. Heck they will even just buy your car off you so you dont have to trade it in as long as it is something they are looking for or sell regularily.

The way they figure your trade value is a combination of KBB which they say is a very high estimate and is usually worth a lot less than that, and what current models like it on the lots are going for as well as what they are going for at the auctions.

However I did work at a chevrolet dealer a few years ago in 2001 and that is when my 98 SE V6 with 30K on it was traded in and the dealer only gave them $4500 for a car that was still under factory warrenty! And so I picked it up for $5500!

It is much better to sell it out right if you can but the economy is so poor for the used car market that it is hard to get any money from a trade in or a out right sale. And that is why I am driving my tour into the ground!

Just some info for ya all!

The website for NADA is www.nadaguides.com and includes not only cars but "classic cars", boats, rv's, motorcycles, and even mobile homes.

Another place to check is www.edmunds.com where the values can differ just by location and even color (apparently some colors are more desireable than others, duh!)
Trade in Value 3,800
When I used the link to check on the trade in value of my car, I got a value of $3220. But when I went directly to the kbb.com site and entered the same information, I got a value of $2880. Regardless, my car isn't worth much, which is sad, considering I paid $22,000 for it new five years ago. Remind me not to buy any more Ford compact sedans.

My first attempt came up....
Private Party Value (no value)
Kelley Blue Book does not attempt to report a value on a "poor" vehicle because the value of cars in this category varies greatly.
Private Party value represents what you might expect to pay for a used car when purchasing from a private party. It may also represent the value you might expect to receive when selling your own used car to another private party.

then when i switched it to fair condition. The body sucks but it runs good. i got a value of $1725. Still kind of high i think.

Now the SVT....146,000 $6,675

I owe 2k on it so at least I am not upside down on it.

I paid $9400 on it (2001) with 25K on it.
Drive it for business and recovered $13,140 in mileage cost ($0.365/mile)
I've paid about $2500 in gas, $2000 in Insurance and $1800 in Maint.

So 15700 Expense, 13140 in income = Car has cost me $2560 to own it for 2 years. If I sold it, I would have driven it for 2 years free.

Not a bad deal. Drive free for 2 years essentially.

However, I intend to keep driving it another 2 years. Mileage rate is now $0.38/mile. About 18000-20000 miles a year. Car will be paid off by April.
I will make money on the deal. In the $1500 - $2500 range.

Get paid to drive for 4 years - Even better deal.

I've done this twice already. With an 96 escort and before that, an 89 Toyota Pickup.

FRiends at work ask why I don't take a company car @ $130/month cost. (Taurus w/ Vulcan right now is Co. Car) and I say I prefer to make money rather than pay, and I prefer the cars I use rather than the generic leased cars the Company provides.

Try getting that in the real world, year 2000 Contiques are going for that in dealer ads. KBB "high retail" is the top value, and is mostly used by insurance companies and banks. But real world transactions are lower. Ever hear the term "never pay retail"?

My trade in is down to $2800, and I'd be lucky if I got $5000-5300.

KBB = fiction. Their whole reason for being is to give dealers a low trade in # combined with a high retail #. Dealers are their main market.

BTW, www.nadaguides.com is the consumer site with retail #'s only. The industry subscriber-only site is www.nada.com/b2b .
Posted By: Y2KGreenSE Re: Kelly's Blue Book value of your car - 01/18/04 09:12 PM
Edmund's "True Market Value" is the best I think. Also, look in the "Smart Shopper" forums for the "Real World Trade in Values" thread. It has postings from a real buyer of used cars and he is on the money with what cars are really worth.
$6450

'98 CSVT with 53k miles.

I could sell it for $8k.

This isn't counting all the new parts and the xenons + leather recaro seats in there. That alone would bump it up another $3k, but if I were to sell it, I'd be happy getting $9500 for it.

I guess I'll be keeping it for the long haul. . .
From Edmunds.com:

Totaled 08/15/03 with 64,200 miles on it, other guys insurance gave me $8133 for the car. I only owed $4500. Made for a nice little down payment on the Escape.

As I said before, I'm amazed at how Edmunds has plus/minus values for color since some are more desirable than others.
Posted By: Y2KGreenSE Re: Kelly's Blue Book value of your car - 01/21/04 02:33 AM
Supposedly green and blue are "out", while silver and tan are "in".

Also, mods add little value to a car's price. You'd have to part them out to get back any money. Ask anyone who's sold a car.
Posted By: BK4293_dup1 Re: Kelly's Blue Book value of your car - 01/21/04 02:42 AM
Mods actually take away from what a dealer will give you if you go to trade in your car.

I know I wouldnt want to buy a ghetto modded car thinking it's already been beat on.
