I'm thinking about buying a 98 GL with 125K miles for $2000, do you think this is a good deal and how much longer is this engine going to last? The car is in great shape and the engine is immaculate.

Chris
99 SVT ~29,180ish on it
Not bad, but over the internet, no way to tell how long it'll last. Maybe 100k miles more, maybe 500 miles more. I've got close to 100k now (I have a swapped gauge cluster, so actual mileage isn't shown and I'm too lazy to add/subtract often to see what it really has).
body, 88K

engine 20, twenty miles, not 20K

(ok, ok, i just installed a new 3L )
122k
If you search back a little while (change the search to search more than the last week) you will find many threads talking about how many miles people have on their contour.]

For the one you are looking at. Who know I think how it was taken care of will have more to do with how many miles you will be able to get out of it than the nuumber of miles on it now.

I know we have one member with 250K on a 95 but we have had other members blow their engine with less than 30K so it is hard to say from just mileage how good it will be.

As for me I keep my mileage in my sig so just look down for it.

102K - not even one major repair (knock, knock on the wood)
95 LS - 121k - new radiator and wheel bearing

95 SE - 98k - wheel bearings, parking break cables, O2 sensor, water pump

99 SE - 62k - O2 sensor, parking brake cables

99 SE - 56k - O2 sensor, parking brake cables, alternator (cracked housing), exhaust gasket, DPFE sensor

so I would say if the car was taken care of it should be good to go

2000 SE V6 Automatic ----> 60,700 miles
65K and climbing...
almost 73,000
2000 SVT - 62,300
Almost 18,000 miles since I bought it 8 months ago
99 SVT 87,000
2000 SE 34,000mi $1600

I've got about $2500 total in it (excluding the wheels & tires) w/ SVT bumpers & skirts...

Bought it wrecked. It spent the first part of its life as a rental. My engine is immaculate also, but being a rental prior, I still don't trust it(I've rented cars before )...the abuse must stop
bought mine 03/03 with 41k on it, it was a rental... now i have 59k.... i sure can put the miles on, huh? drove to philly and north ohio from central ohio a couple of times tho.
bought mine 4/98, have 42,500 on it...
98 s.e. mtx 54,000 baught it 12,2003 with only 29,000 i drive alot.
00 SVT with 36,000 miles
bought my 95 GL with 108k for ~$3000 (had some mods on it).
now has 119k, going strong.
146,000 thusfar. Hoping for 200,000.

Yes, I'd say a high milage 98' for 2K seems like a good price, but it's hard to really say w/o being able to drive & "kick the tires".
42k on my '96- the cream puff
and 35k on the 1942 pickup, but i think the odometer stopped working over thirty years ago
About 62,000 Thank got its parked for 6 months a year.
95 mystique = 117k
Got 52000, bought in may 02 with 24000, good thing i bought the esp, or id be out some cash
110,000 and awaiting a rebuild this winter break because of it. I wouldn't do it if I didn't LOVE THIS CAR!

99 green csvt with 51871 miles on it, but i am get a new motor in it on tuesday thanks to oil stravation
98 SVT, 92,000 miles

Contour engines are strong, it's the stuff around them that gives you fits. Water pumps, wheel bearings, and catalytic converters all will fail. $2K for a car with high mileage is still a pretty good deal. A Honda Accord with smiliar wear would go for $5 to $7K, although it will probably need less repair work that the Contour. If you have the inclination and expectation that minor things will go wrong, then you should enjoy your Contour. If you expect it to be mechanically perfect, then it will not be the car for you, even though it will be cheaper (from a total cost) than the example Accord mentioned above.

GO FOR IT
178k and climbing. As for now, looks like I'm still golden and should make 200k.

To my knowledge I'm still on the original clutch too. I at least have 100k on it.
2000 with 17k on it....got it in July 03 with 4800 miles on it, guess I've been driving a bit much eh?
I'm at 137,000 miles with everything original except for the usual wear items - tires, front brake pads, serpentine belt, spark plugs. I'm hoping to get to 200,000 miles with no drama. Most modern cars should be able to reach the 200,000 mark, if maintained carefully and driven conservatively. My last car still was running great at 250,000 and I have several friends who got 250,000 to 300,000 miles on both domestic and foreign cars, with the original engines and transmissions.
1996 Contour SE - 191,000 miles +
1998 SVT - 52,000 miles

The SE, within the past 1000 miles, has had:
New wheel bearings, new front rotors/pads, tires (last night), knuckle assy., axle, wheel bearings.
And it will be getting new plugs, wires, fuel filter, pcv valve, uim/lim cleaning, tb cleaned, etc... (tonight)

1998 E0 SVT..... almost 70k.

Just turned 23,000 yesterday on my '98 T-red SVT! (I bought it last year when it had 8,095 miles on it.)
This was as of 10-13-03, but the pic was taken 12-1-03
Your right Beachboy, our one work van (97' Safari) has 475K on the original trans and motor (but the oil pump was replaced at 100K) I take care of all the preventive maintence and get this, it has run regular motor oil most of its life and until only recently have I switched to synthetic because of his route getting back to the shop to late, so now when I do get it, I've had synthetic put in w/o any problems. I have the oil changed once a month in it, which is 6K. I predict this thing to hit 500K around the end of January or beginning of February, look for the pics when it does
99k on my 97, she runs like a champ! need to replace my parking brake cables though...
Approx 130,000. Clock turned 80,000 this morning. I don't know the exact number to get a perfect figure. I think the SVT gauges had something like 46,500 on them when installed.
Currently at 98,700 miles.
Bought it used in April '99 with 37,000.
131k and finally engine went. hahahahaha. gonna crack my odometer and roll it back
mines a 99 contour se zetec 33k when we gt it in 5/2001 now it has over 94k
260,000 on the 95 SE origional motor, trans was replaced at 200k miles. Still pumpin strong....
146,000 on the 99 SVT, all origional
136,000 on the wininter beater....'90 Jeep Wrangler 2.5
I got 61,500 miles on mine. Purchased it in 4/02 with 31k on it.
95GL - 138,3xx
95 se in a holding pattern at 109k and change since june
She's got 41,236 miles and fast asleep in garage heaven for the winter.
mine barely saw 120k. Poor thing.
59,500 most of which are highway miles...
New to the forum....long time follower of CEG....
I've got 33.5k miles on my baby...(not sure of exact number, she is currently sitting in garage at home, since I'm at college... I miss her... ) But once finals are finished, I'll be able to see her again...
just turned 87k, nothing major yet, just all four o2 sensors, the water pump, several fog light bulbs, and tires.

Peace

Jed
Mine just rolled 90,000. So far i replaced the oxygen sensors, cleaned the upper intake and egr passages and, of course, the cel came back on. Other than that it is great.

Blaze
Got it in may of 02 with 18k, currently has - 69,522
27k and some, i drive it when i am not at college
My '00 SE just turned 106K yesterday with no more than routine fluid changes, tires, brakes, and spark plugs during its life. And it still has the original water pump.
i have a 00 svt, with about 83,500 on it. since i have bought the car in july i've had to get the fuel pump and fuel neck filler replaced, tranny redone, new imrc motor, UIM/LIM cleaning, new rear tire, new sunroof motor (just about gone, haven't replaced it yet) and just yesterday installed a new wheel bearing on the front passenger side. all within five months and i'm only the second owner of it
68K

Cleaned fuel pump strainers at 63k

Dash Warp fixed around 45K
New Rotors/Brakes at 51K (Replaced Factory original)
Replaced Factory Fogs (Lense was blistered) with PIAA's around 38K

That's it

Rest is oil/filter routine stuff.
Got her on 6/15/99 (99MY CSVT)Passed 130K last month. Original enigne parts including waterpump. My baby has taken on Watkins Glen 4 times , Road America once , Mosport once , Gingerman once and all is well (knock on wood)...She's been to Montreal several times too! She's one tough gal!
252,000 KM = 157,000 MILES on the car...going strong.
88,5xx on the original water pump... but just had to put a new battery in. OEM lasted for 4 years
98 SE Sport V-6 MTX
125,600 plus about 2000 a month.
Replaced the power steering rack for like 1000 2 years ago. E-Brake crapped out, replaced all blown headlights, and about a hundred other little things for 20-30 bucks each. And my heater only comes through the defrost, and my windshield washers just died. What the hell kind of a thing is that to die? Seriously.
63K. Almost all highway miles.
Hello,

98 Mystique

85,000 miles IMRC, Torque Converter @ 81,000k
25,000 Almost totaled - New Front end body parts, Radiator, Windshield, Front Doors, Dashboard, Passenger Seat rail, Steering Column, Airbag System etc. All I needed were splints for the sprained wrist, treatment for airbag burns on hands....car saved my life....so I had it rebuilt good as new.

tryin to catch up to me i see???....
AiNT GUNNA HAPPEN!
I know, I don't really expect to catch up to you. I am just happy I am able to have my Tour for so long. I've had her since 1997 and bought her at 40,000 miles. I have been the only driver of the car as well. I hope I can make it to 240,000 miles so I can be the one to put 200,000 on her on my own. With no one elses help. If she dies, I'll have to find another Tour.
For a 1995 Ford Contour GL, with 110941 Miles, I got her for $300! Then hadta rebuild the engine! And STILL have problems!
parkedcar, i have 85,000 on my 98 csvt and was wondering how your car is running with 147 or so thousand miles>?
91xxx miles on my 95 GL. still running strong!!
