I'm here in sunny southern Spain and my 98 SVT just started to overheat quickly. I caught it in time by glancing at the temperature gage just before it reached the high mark. Given the sudden way it started and no other evidence of any other problem or broken part, I am suspecting a broken waterpump. Is the European Mondeo Duratec water pump usable in an SVT? I think so but would like some additional info before I commit to obtaining a European one. Also does the European one have a plastic or metal impellor?

hopefully someone will come along to confirm the waterpump compatibility...meanwhile...if it is the same pumpthen a new one from ford will be plastic but according to the service guy when mine was replaced it is an upgraded plastic impellar

I know this has been rehashed.. I am starting to grow concerned the more I think about it.. maybe I shouldn't think so much. I have 70K on the clock.. but from my understanding the newer versions have a different plastic impellers that don't fail

My '99 SE had a white impeller, I've read that the white impeller is the fix from Ford. My SVT just turned 41,000, going to change it soon. White or black its still plastic.

With all the documented failures and the damage it could cause, you should do it, especially since you have 70K on your car. Waterpumps can have problems other than broken impellers, seals and bearings come to mind!

NAPA Duratec- Pro is what I installed in the SE, pretty easy install.

Sorry, Eric, I don't know if the pumps are the same. Like you I suspect they are. Even if someone here has the North American part # it might not help as Ford has upgrade the pump and changed #'s at least 4-5 times.

It maybe your waterpump or your thermostat stuck closed (which would be so much nicer).

To determine the culprit, start the car and turn your heater on high (both temp & fan). When the temp gauge gets up to 1/5th - 1/3rd you will start to feel heat through the vents if it's the T-stat. If there is no heat or much less than normal, by then, it means your waterpump is likely gone. Good luck.

Marky's right, the plastic impellars on the white ones don't seem to fail but I've seen a couple of these (white impellar) pumps fail at the internal seal. One was mine, just 3 months after the black impellared one disintegrated on me.

Guess what? I'm only going to use the metal impellar ones from now on and hope that their seals are fine and the two "white impellar" failures I've witnessed are just flukes.

I was at the dealer when he removed the water pump and sure enough, the impellor was in 8 pieces. THey can get a water pumpfor a v-6 Cougar overnight but are notsure it will fit. Can anyone confirm a Cougar v-6 water pump will fit a 1998 Contour Duratec v-6?

Hold on for a few more minutes & I'll confirm that for you. Stand by...

EDIT:

According to NAPA auto parts, the pump is the same in the 2.5L Contour & 2.5L Cougar engines.

i had the white one in my car, the bearing on it was wearing... it wouldnt spin evenly when we took it out.. to further i dropped it about 2 ft from my hand by my hip to the floor... it landed on the metal side but even so 2 of the fins just snapped right off.. i was like eek! trash can!

Thanks for the help. Now all I have to do is convince the dealer the Cougar pump will fit. It's a trip communicating with the mechanic when he doesn't speak English and I don't speak Spanish.
