I've been "between jobs" for a little while now, so I've been out and about with my kids during the day more than usual. As I have been taking them around town in the wagon, I have been watching people. It seems like about 50% of the drivers I see are NOT wearing seatbelts. I might be over estimating it, it might be 35-40%, but still that seem crazy high to me, especially in Mass. that has a seatbelt law.

Am I nuts, or is that normal. Do most of you always wear seatbelts, especially when driving? Or am I an old fuddy-duddy and no one wears them anymore.

I'm just curious.

Seat belts?
Yes, always.
No, never.
Most of the time, when I remember.
What's a seatbelt?

Posted By: rouar Re: Seat Belts? - 11/20/05 04:03 PM
Always, and absolutely. I REFUSE to take the car out of Park if any one of my passengers hasn't put their seat belt on, which thankfully with my friends hasn't been a problem. (I'll admit to being a hyprocrite when I had the Probe and we regularly stuffed three adults in the two-seater rear, but that was out of necessity. With a sedan, there's no questions asked.)

Always. People will talk about accidents where the car gets pulverized and you've got nothing to lose by getting thrown from the vehicle (where your odds are slim, but still preferable to none), but these people are betting their lives on an inside straight draw. You're much more likely to have an accident where the car flips over several times than you are to have one where it fits in the trunk of a Miata afterward. You can only plan for one or the other, and I plan for the most likely accident by putting my damn seatbelt on.

First thing I do as soon as I get in any car is put my seatbelt on. Also make sure my passengers have theirs on,because here,if you get pulled over and your passengers aren't wearing their seatbelts,YOU get the ticket.

driver and passenger have harnesses in my girl...rear seat belts have been removed
Posted By: ZeroHour Re: Seat Belts? - 11/21/05 03:02 PM
If you're in my car, you have a seatbelt on. End-o-story. Even when I was nice and took people I knew from HS home I made them wear their seatbelts. Got some funny looks, at least until I started driving! lol

But yet general rule, always use the belt.

Like stated above. MY CAR WILL NOT MOVE UNTIL EVERYONE HAS THEIR SEAT BELT ON!!!

Seat belts always. How else am I going to hold myself in the seat when taking a decresing-radius left turn?
Posted By: epattonm Re: Seat Belts? - 11/21/05 04:54 PM
It's become habit. I'll put my seatbelt on even if I'm moving the car in the driveway. I sit down, start the car, click the seat-belt, then put it in gear. Since no one ever rides in my car, I don't worry about passengers.

I've always used mine, even when I lived in Maine. Feel nekkid without it.

Florida will ticket the DRIVER if any of the passengers are not belted in. Used to be front seat only, now everybody has to buckle up. The 'click-it or ticket' program is coming on line again this week, so if you're traveling in Florida, buckle up.

I don't wear my harness in the contour often, unless on trips at higher speeds on the interstate.
I wear the shoulder belt in the escort because it's automatic. I use the lap one when I'm having fun in the car or on the interstate.

All the time, every time. Its second nature to me, and everyone that rides in my car must wear it too...

FYI: Not using the lap restraint shows an increased risk of serious chest and abdominal injuries in an accident.

PS: You're an idiot for not taking the couple extra seconds to put on your seatbelt. Its not your driving you necessarily need to be concerned with. Lack of seatbelts in accidents have helped increase my insurance rates too. Thanks.

+2! I've done the same!

I treat everything as if I were in the cockpit of a plane. All wear seat belts, or there WILL be delays. Listen to my safety briefing, or there WILL be whining when one fails to hear instructions! That's how meticulous we are.

As an EMT, I've seen what happens when people don't wear seatbelts. And I can tell you, that alone is enough to make me, although common sense always kicks in before that. There was lady near here that died in a 15mph accident in a parking lot... she wasn't wearing a seatbelt, got hit by another car she didn't see, fell halfway out of the sunroof, and got her head crushed when the car tipped over (SUV).

Well, I'm glad to hear that the CEG community is safer and smarter than I am beginning to think the driving public is...

Good job people, keep it up !

Wow, really. I never knew that.

It's my life. I'm also an idiot for smoking, dropping outta college, etc. My life.
I don't care about your insurance, so you're welcome. But while we're on the topic. My insurance is higher just because of my age. I have to dodge idiots all day (even ones wearing their seat belts). I think the ones causing accidents are the ones that really raise insurance. If noone ever wrecked, seatbelts wouldn't matter.

Yes, you are right. If noone ever wrecked, then seatbelts would be a non-issue. But that's why it's called an "ACCIDENT"... I see what you are saying about it being your life and your choice. Yes, you are an idiot for not wearing it. Unfortunately there isn't a law against being an idiot. But for whatever reason, our society has decided that seatbelts usage by all drivers (at least) is important to society as a whole, that there are laws and penalties to encourage their use.

The reason that we are required to wear seat belts is because deaths and injuries can hurt society financially and in some other ways.

Financially? Holy insensitive Batman ... is this really your view on life?

Psychologically is the best reason I can think of ... have a few friends who are deeply affected by their friends' deaths ...

Seat belts laws don't exist because people dying makes people cry. And I said nothing even remotely close to money/or ANYTHING being my veiw on life.

Every time, even when going to the little store 1/4 mile from the house. I know 3 people that have been in bad wrecks less than 1 mile from their house. So yes, EVERY TIME!!! That goes for passengers too.

Mine goes on right after I start the car every time. Feels weird without it.

I really could care less about the other drivers on the road wearing their seatbelts, but what bugs the hell out of me is when I see a small child (big enough to be out of a carseat) hopping around the backseat without a seatbelt on.

Twice in the last two weeks I've called local police dispatch to report cars with unrestrained children. I have no idea as to the outcome of either, probably nothing, but the dispatcher seems to take me seriously, and at least the cruisers in the area are getting a description of the vehicles.

People can put themselves in danger all they want, but when that irresponsibility endangers the life of an innocent child is when it pisses me off. Good safety has to be taught, and those who aren't made to wear seatbelts when they are young grow up to be Kremit.

Since I've started riding a motorcycle, I've become even more safety conscious than ever. Buckle up and drive (or ride) safe, and watch out for the two-wheelers!

I think that people don't think they can get hurt. I never wore my seatbelt when I was young teenager, then I got into street bikes, that is when I realize that 70mph is really hauling. I have never wreck a bike(knocking on wood) and hope that I never do so take advantage of that belt.

I feel naked without my seatbelt

Posted By: red99sesport Re: Seat Belts? - 12/13/05 07:10 PM
My Toyota has occupant sensing. If the driver isn't wearing their seatbelt, this annoying as hell beep starts, and will not go away. If there is someone in the passenger's seat, there is a second light and beeper on the passenger's side dash that warns them to buckle their seatbelt as well. Only once the belt is buckled does the passenger's airbag status light switch from off to on. I always wear my belt, so these things don't give me reason to wear the seatbelts, but they give the people riding in my car who won't normally wear a seatbelt a reason to wear them.

Well it doesn't seem mean, just common thought of man. I however don't wish death/injury on anyone.

I do not think I own the road at all.

Clearly, you're an idiot if you think you do not have to look out for other idiots on the road.

Sounds to me like you have no regard for other motorists and act as if YOU are king of the road.
