Here is a question that has probably already been answered but i searched and didnt succeed. In the 99 svt inside the center council glove box is something that baffles me! In the back of the compartment are two strange holes? Looks like you might be able to put change in there but nope thats not it. What is that for, i have been busting my brain over it!!!!
Posted By: Nate'sTour Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 12:40 PM
I did a search (it's console, not council ) and I'm not sure.

You're talking the part under the center armrest?
Posted By: RawBurt Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 12:43 PM
haha ooooops... . Yeah the one between the two seats.
Posted By: rouar Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 12:57 PM
That part is actually a rear seat cupholder for those not fortunate enough to have a door on theirs. A mixed blessing. The black plastic with the holes simply covers up the cup-sized hole.

Most unfortunately the picture I had posted in this topic has since been removed by its owner, so no comparison pics to show you

if you would have clicked on this link he provided, you would have seen that prior to '98 and svt's, there was a cupholder there. there isn't one now. that is just a "covering" panel. comprende?
Posted By: RawBurt Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 02:27 PM
So it's pretty much useless then right?

you could try cutting it away like the link to post suggested

Thank you ladies and gentlemen, may this thread die.....
Posted By: dbateman Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 03:07 PM

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I have a cupholder there. Under my armrest and behind my emergency brake is a rectangular storage compartment. Then behind that is a round deep cupholder for the rear seat.

If anybody has a pic of the console without the cupholder I'd be sort of interested in seeing it...
Posted By: RawBurt Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 03:09 PM
Okay, i dont think i have one. But i will get a picture of it tonight. I would love to see the pictures of your cup holders!

This is precisely what I'm talking about.

All Pre-98 Contours had a cover. All SVTs had a cover.

All 98+ GL, LX, SE (and SE Sport??) had an exposed compartment with rear cupholder. I use the cupholder to hold my two-way radios.

Pictures of the famous cupholder in my currently very cluttered car:

Holds the two-ways perfectly

Can anybody take some detailed pics of their pre-98 or their SVT of this compartment?
Posted By: RawBurt Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/01/04 07:16 PM
Well wow would you look at that, thanks for the pic.

yes SE Sports have the same center console, the arm rest is a pain in the ass, that is why I put a pre98 console in

You've got leather in your Contour SE???????????

I thought I was the only one!

I have no idea why those two little holes are there but I keep a miniture flashlight in one of them.

Anybody with an SVT care to show pics too?

I think the SVT console lids are rounded, and of course leather bound, not fabric and diagonal like the pre-98's.
They're pretty deep IIRC.
If no one posts before me, I'll try to snap a pic this weekend during the Tasca show at the dragway.

Here is a pic of my 99 CSVT.
Posted By: 96mercury Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/02/04 07:33 PM
From the pic it looks like 2 lighter outlets.
Posted By: JonnySVT Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/02/04 07:42 PM
That's what mine looks like too. Maybe there is a cupholder underneath, but the question still stands. WTF are those two holes for??? What was Ford thinking? Nothing fits in those thing!
Posted By: Renee_dup1 Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/02/04 08:01 PM
I have the 98 SE and I don't have a cover on my console, but I have the cup holder/ashtray, although, I don't have the actual ashtray in there anymore. In fact, I don't know where the hell I put that thing. LOL.
Posted By: lsneo Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/03/04 03:21 AM
maybe ford made those holes to screw with us. So if you say drop a penny or something then you woulnt be able to get the penny out and would have to drive with a rattle.
Posted By: rouar Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/03/04 05:16 AM
I'm willing to bet it was another cost-saving measure. You know, taking away that much unnecessary plastic in 10,000 cars (SVTs) yields some pennies saved!

Well, maybe not. The cupholder-area underneath does look useful somehow. I saw a picture of hmouta's setup, he's got a stealth switch mounted in there for something (neons?).

EDIT here... it's the master switch for all these in his car.

Looking closer at that first picture of hmouta's car it appears obvious that the holes reach down all the way to the "cupholder" part. I thought they were just holes in the plastic, but now it looks like they are the mounting stabilizers that help keep the lid mounted to the console. Also makes it look like a VERY easy mod for someone who wants a lid on their console.

wooow...it's like watching center arm console porn.
Posted By: dsickles123456789_dup1 Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/03/04 04:48 PM
maybe to hold pens?
Posted By: lsneo Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/03/04 11:29 PM
or french fries.
Posted By: dpa43_dup1 Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/04/04 12:29 AM
I'd have to say that they are braces for the mounting screws. I took the screws out to see what was underneath and here is the pic.

Here is the part # if anyone wants to try to order one, might be kinda hard to come by at the dealer thou.

man if they had put that armrest in the SE's instead of that [censored] waste of one on the side of the seat that gets in the way of shifting when down i might not have put a pre98 console in my car....but then again I like it better so maybe it was a good idea
Posted By: rouar Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/04/04 03:19 AM
Now if only they were available in gray. I would do it in an instant.

I think we have a weiner!
Posted By: dbateman Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/04/04 03:26 PM

I'll be darned. They de-contented the armrest & cover with holes. Actually though, I like my 98 console better, the rear cupholder is nice, and my driver's seat has a usable armrest.

Posted By: Circar3 Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/04/04 03:30 PM
Where does ford come up with these things, HEH???

just wondering how you find that armrest useful when you have a mtx, I can see that it is ok for highway cruising but it is in my way when shifting, but then again I find the pre-98 console jus tthe right height for an armrest
Posted By: TexasRealtor Re: Glove box Mystery - 10/04/04 04:02 PM
I find the true dual screw holes with the resonater screws removed adds at least 8 hp.

I am not sure what your point is in saying this? Here I am trying to be helpful in answering fellow CEG'ers questions and this is the kind of response you post, calling me a weiner and posting a HELP smiley!!! What the [censored] did I ever do to you to say this. Maybe I am taking your response the wrong way but this is one of the many reasons why I do not like posting on this site. Don't get me wrong I enjoy
CEG, but sometimes it seems pointless to post or respond to a topic if this is the response it receives.

The way I took it was they were being sarcastic, but good hearted... but I do not understand the help part.

I don't think they meant anything bad, IMO...

dpa43, FWIW I think the positive responses far outweighed the negative in this case. I for one (fairly obviously ) appreciated the pics.

I always thought "I think we have a weiner" was just a good-natured mutation of "I think we have a winner." Kinda like "My cow-orkers said whatever..."

My arm isn't long enough to hit the armrest. The armrest is a little wimpy but I definitely like it on the highway.

That IS what I meant. Don't take everything so serious. I have often wondered the same thing about those holes in the console.
