Well, the flywheel finally gave out, the car won't start (at all reliably) without replacing it, and so Ross will be departing from us. 6 years and 185,228 miles was a long faithful road for an exceptional partner in crime.

His remains will be donated to the betterment of animals in the Twin Cities area.

Ross will be sorely missed.
Posted By: amarv12_dup1 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 01:32 AM
Sounds like he lived a very full life.

Hopefully my car will make it that far...or at least over 100k.
Posted By: unisys12 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 01:32 AM
Your getting rid of it because of the flywheel? Ship that thing to me, so that you can better the life of a CEG'er!!

Sorry to hear about the failure though!

that's so sad...

P.S.
do you think the animals will notice a few missing parts here and there? UIM being an example? may be they are color blind and won't tell black from grey?

A moment of silence please............
Posted By: RoadiJeff_dup1 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 02:01 AM
6 years...I'm guessing then that Ross is/was a 98 SVT. Do you know if he filled out a donor card?

I'll be happy to reduce the landfill waste by taking the UIM and LIM off your hands.
Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 02:08 AM

Posted By: PlatoSVT Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 02:11 AM
And I'd gladly take a few parts off your hands as well. EO Center Caps if you have em, (IDOMIN8, where are ya?) and the other stuff mentioned in my sig. If you can help with any of these, awesome and thanks. Sorry to hear about it kickin the can, hopefully you'll keep trolling around!

No kidding? I'm glad I got to see him briefly before his passing.
Posted By: ZoomZoom Diva Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 02:45 AM
Ross had been dealing with several chronic conditions for a while now (those at Spring Zing are aware of the transmission), and a couple have been becoming more severe. I could not justify the investment in a flywheel (which had been diagnosed as a problem a while back when I had bearing work done last spring).

I was going to put a classified up when I was more up to it for the parts removed and spare parts for the car.
Posted By: Nate S Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 02:48 AM
im sorry , he will go on to a better place...
you could donate him to a nice home, like mine, where he could be resurrected
screw the animals!

It's a TERRIBLE shame to get rid of good-ole Ross for something like a flywheel/trans issue . I have an SVT flywheel sitting in my garage , I'm sure many others do too . Get the trans fixed , you know you want to !! LOL !

Seriously , I'm sorry to hear that Ross' head is on the chopping block . I knew that Mazda would eventually spell doom for Ross ... just not this soon . He lead a good , long life in your care . I'm sure the Mazda will too .

Sell Ross to a fellow enthusiast to keep him going ! If you feel compelled to give the animals money , donate some of the $$$ you get as a CASH donation . If you DONATE Ross , he's gone for sure .
Posted By: PeppermintPatty Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 12:27 PM
So, Ross has a valid donor card?
Posted By: ZoomZoom Diva Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 12:51 PM
Yeah... the deal was when I bought the Mazda if something went wrong of substance (and the cost to fix this is substance)... I wasn't going to fix it waiting for the next thing to go wrong. I didn't think it would be this soon either.

I agree that he's likely to be gone after donation... but I just don't have the space or the logistics to handle a sale or parting out in this type.

Thank you all for not thinking (at least out loud) that I'm some sort of nutcase for thinking of Ross in this way.

I feel lucky to have met Ross earlier this spring! I would have loved to take him off your hands aswell. If you still have him I could arrange the sale of him on CEG so he stays in the community and you could donate some money to the fluffy animals too! Dont let him go to the scrap yard in the sky!!!!

You are kidding me..

You're GIVING your car away? Or basically just taking it to the scrap yard for a flywheel? I'm a sarcastic person myself but I'm not buying it.

Posted By: sigma Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/06/04 11:18 PM
I know how you think of Ross and I think it only respectful that you pass him on to another CEGer. He'll just go to a scrap yard otherwise. Give him to whomever wants him and have them donate to the animal shelter a small amount of money. Even if he's just parted out it's better than just being sold off by the pound.

I can't believe you'd donate the whole damn car when there are so many people, me included, who could use parts from him (him????). Are you're doing it for a tax deduction? If Ross meant so much to you, why not let him live on with your fellow CEG'ers? That's a much more fitting and respectful way to treat him--not the junk yard!! Jeez, it even hurts to say that and I didn't even know him. How 'bout it?
Posted By: ZoomZoom Diva Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 03:05 AM
I think I have found a couple of better charities... both would fix Ross as mechanic training and then either sell the car (and I could see a guy working on Ross wanting to buy him when he's done... it normally happens with the cooler cars donated) or provide him to a needy family to drive.

In both cases, he would be spared the junkyard and being disassembled, yet be given the intensive care I cannot provide.
Posted By: Shaggy_dup1 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 03:07 AM
Sorry James! But, at least someone else will be happy with Ross and his high flying antics!
Posted By: cvkillacontour98 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 03:53 AM
if the body is stil in decent shape and peopel are willing to fix it just sell to someone who is willing to put time into it. no use in lettign a csvt die so easily. back when my mr2 threw a rod threw the block i didnt give up on it even though peopel said the car was odl and has tons of miles on it. i put a newer motor in it and it came back stronger than ever. im sure someone would have the same enthusiastic approach that i had towards my old mr2. mayeb someoen has a wrecked tour out there with a good motor and tranny they could drop into it. if i had the cash i would make you an offer and just drop my s.e. motor and tranny in it just to have an svt.

Well, Im sorry to hear about your loss.... but I would be glad to take the exhaust off your hands give a little piece of that crazy reliability to a kid who wants to growl of an SVT exhaust on his zetec.
Posted By: Escort1991_dup1 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 03:56 PM
TAX DEDUCTION if he gives it to a charity. Smartest way to go in my opinion. Also, SVT Contours have good resale, so James would be getting a good deduction.

They have better resale than normal Contours.
Posted By: sigma Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 04:43 PM
For a car to retain over 1/3 of it's value after 5 years really ain't too shabby for a domestic. He could probably push it up to almost a $10,000 deduction.
Posted By: Kremithefrog Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 04:43 PM
Originally posted by Escort1991:

Not really. Resale is in relation to the price they sold for when new, and SVTs sold for a good bit more new than other contours. Used, they only sell for a little bit more than other contours (if they even sell).
Posted By: ZoomZoom Diva Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 04:44 PM
And the resale value is completely theoretical on extremely high mileage late model cars. Noone would buy the car for NEAR what the book says its worth.

EDIT... I actually have to have an appraisal to claim more than $5000 and the most I can see it able to claim is in the low $6's by book (edmunds, kelly,NADA)
Posted By: SAV Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 05:00 PM
I've always had a little odd thing about naming your cars, but to just throw them away in such a manner is a real disgrace. For a simple 3 hour job, that...er...Ross could be running all over again. That's far easier than going through the hassle of donating to charity, because that's not as simple a task as you may think. Besides, we always complain that nobody helps one another on here so this is an opportunity for you to make a step in the better direction.

I dunno.. we donated an Escort station wagon a few years ago. Mom called the charity, they brought a tow truck, she signed the title over, they gave a reciept. It was probably easier than dealing with an individual. She actually had been contacted by a homeless guy that wanted to buy it so he could live in it, but she was afraid of liability problems since it needed new brakes and tires. The charity seemed like less of a hassle.

When it's time for my car to go, I'll probably donate it to a charity organization too. I'd do much better with the tax write off than trying to sell it.
Posted By: SAV Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 06:09 PM
I'm not saying it's a hassle for all, but my personal experience with donating my first set of wheels (a 1987 Toyota Corolla FX16) didn't go so well. I ended up selling it to my neighbor for $325 and he blew the headgasket 2 weeks later, after I had it pretty much trouble free for a year. It had 220,400 miles on it when I gave it up and he blew it with 220,454.

Off topic though, I'm just saying not all organisations are a hassle, just the personal one I dealt with.
Posted By: zgendron_dup1 Re: RIP- Ross... 8-5-2004 - 08/07/04 06:17 PM
Be sure to do your research before donating the car. There are a bunch of For-Profit 3rd party agencies out there. Be sure to look into the agency before you just hand over the keys.

RIP Ross. I'll remember the sweet exhaust tone I heard coming from him when you pulled up to the restaurant in Denver. IIRC, even your mother liked the exhaust tone.
At least you've got a worthy replacement.

If you care about whats going to happen to the car after its donated, dont donate it! It may get fixed up in the begining, but the car will probably be given to some poor a** family who wont have the money to give it the tender lovin care that a Contour SVT needs. Even if YOU dont want to scrap it, it will probably make it to a scrap yard within a year anyway.

Please Please give, or sell it to a fellow CEG member and keep its memory alive. Rather, dont let it become "just a memory".

Im all up for the selling, but if you want to give it away I would be willing to take it off your hands in exchange for a small donation to your shelter.

I have an SVT and I know plenty about them and I wouldn't mind owning two. There are plenty of other Contour owners on here who feel the same way.
