Let us know how much of a difference the cracked secondaries make. On my 95 ATX it has really improved part throttle response.

Great news!!! Doing this work has totally solved the detonation problem that the car has had for the last 3 years! I was able to put the superchip in, and for the first time in warm weather, it didn't ping violently!
Part throttle response if very nice, and some of it is probably due to the chip. I've got the stop screw about 3/4 of the way in, and I like it. It idles sooo smooth now, so having the secondaries propped open a bit has not affected that. No throttle hang, no loss of low end torque. In fact, I think there is more down low now!

Great job, Lance.
I'll have to keep a watch out for oil seep under my upper intake as a sign I need to repeat your process in 12-18 months. Maybe when I replace the spark plugs at 40-50K or so. I have the later top-feed injectors, so maybe there's a small chance some of your issues were addressed in the redesign. All I know is they wanted to get the fuel rail as far away from the lower intake as possible to prevent fuel vaporization in the rail. Good idea on cracking the secondaries open a little bit. I have the electric actuator, so I don't know how the stop adjustment works on it. I'll have to check it out. Thanks again. Great work.

Me impressed!!! I don't have the mechanical know how to do all that but seeing those pics makes me wonder. My car is running like crap right now and I wonder if a good cleaning would help. I don't think I will touch the engine as I might mess something up.

Excellent job Lance, and thanks for the pictures and how to. I'm having a problem with detonation as well and I'm seriously thinking about taking it all apart and cleaning it. I cleaned the upper intake and secondaries 3 months ago, car ran a little better but still pings. The next time I'll try your advise. Thanks again for posting pictures, they are a big help.

Lance, is it necessary to replace the gaskets and seals? I didn't and don't notice any problems, but I know you are supposed to (not resuable seals).

Yes, it is absolutely necessary to replace the seals. The only gaskets you can sometimes get away with reusing are the TB and EGR, and maybe the upper intake (depends on how old it is.)
Absolutely no way you can get away with reusing the fuel rail to lower intake seals. These seals are part of the problem to begin with!!!
Everyone, go see the new HOWTO posted to the Mods section of the site. Diagrams and everything. I suggest the word doc, it's formatted a little prettier.

I might be doing a similar teardown next weekend. Probably unnecessary at 40k miles, so I'm still thinking it over. I want to at least give my intakes a good scrub and try that IMRC trick. I'll be sure to take pictures and note any differences.

Excellent, Louis!
The fuel rail is totally different, so I doubt it suffers from the fuel rail to lower seal problem.
I'll be very interested in pics.
