Anyone know what the symptoms of a burnt out valve are?

put on the shm headers... drove to the muffler shop with open headers and a nice little leak. can't find the leak, and i am getting a pinging/knocking noise... not sure if it is releated to the leak, or something else entirely. i will say this tho, even with an MIL, exhaust leak, and the pinging, i am still getting a really large boost in low end torque from these babies smile but i really want to get this thing 100% before i go dyno it... not really fair comparing values from a healthy contour (sans shm headers) and a limp contour (with the headers)

The car will stumble very badly and idle like crap due to not being able to hold compression in that particular cylinder. The car will run like it is on 5.5 cylinders as opposed to 6. You will also get a gas smell in the exhaust due to all the unburnt air/gas that is being passed by the valve on the compression stroke. Compression test each cylinder and you will know which one(s) are the culprit.

If you are not holding compression ... one or more of three possible things ... shot intake valve, shot exhaust vavle, or shot rings. Almost forgot ... a cracked head gasket or cracked head or loose spark plug threads could also cause compression loss.

NOOO! houston, looks like we have a valve problem... this is not good... i am not totally ruleing out this being 100% leak related... but those symptoms you described are closely matched to what i am getting... any further information you have would really help me out... laugh

Compression Test each cylinder ... compression tester at auto parts store and chilton's manual will only set you back about $80.

Uhhh, Bret. You mentioned before that you were running with two bolts undone. That still true?

You may want to check around on the compression guage. I got a nice one for about $32 at an Advance store. When testing the compression, remove all the plugs, and then test each cylinder. It will be better if you can look at the guage while someone cranks the engine. You should see max compression on the first or second stroke for each cylinder you're checking. All the cylinders should be within 20-25% of each other. If you have a lame one, squirt some oil or tranny fluid in the spark plug hole and then re-check that cyl. If the compression improves, the rings are leaking. If the compression still sucks, it's valves or other leakage. Good luck.
