I recently munched a rod bearing (surprise!, it's cylinder #6!) and pulled the motor a couple days ago. When I started taking apart the rod bearings to find the culprit, I noticed that the caps & rod surfaces are EXTREMELY rough and uneven. Anyone know why these caps & rods are like that? I've never seen anything like this before, though I haven't rebuilt a motor in several years. They look like they were cast as one piece then broken somewhere near the centerline of the hole diameter. I'd swear someone forgot to finish machine them if they didn't fit so well together or if they ALL weren't like that. I initially thought that the #6 rod was broken but still bolted, since I pulled it first and saw the condition of the cap, but when I removed the rest, they were all like that. They definitely are position specific for sure since they are so uneven and porous, but it really seems odd to me. Any ideas on how or why Ford does this?

Jeff

PS- Anyone know of any long term results with the revised oil pan or is it still to early to tell?

IIRC that is exactly how they do it.

Powdered metal rods that have cracked caps are the new wave.

They cost less to manufacture.

They are stronger (the cap cannot shift).

No misalignment problems (the cap cannot shift).

They are lighter (less rotating mass).

wow...thanks guys. That makes sense now. After seeing them, it would definitely help with shifting or misalignment...they would either break or stay put....Thanks again...

One caution with these caps.....make sure they are absolutely clean when reassemblng. With the many crevices, specks of dirt can wedge in there...and with these engines anything that reduces a chance of a spun rod bearing....so much the better!

Also, I imagine you do know that the rod and main bolts are torque to yield and CAN NOT be resused!!! Same for head bolts......
