it's making a fairly loud hissing sound when it's put into gear, be it reverse or drive, but in neutral it's fine

noone I've talked to can seem to figure it out

the best way I can describe it is almost it sounds like a loud old ford power steering pump, but the PS pump checks out..seems to be coming from the tranny area

getting ready to take this car to phoenix in a few months, trying to find out if this is serious or not

anyone?

also, grinding at higher rpms...thinking torque converter...could this be this hissing sound too? when you take off you can hear the hiss a little louder, it's almost like a sound a rattlesnake would make...and it's pretty loud

I'm trying to see if it's something that could be fixed cheaply before it (could) mess something else up and end up costing more $$

The hissing is the pump.
The pump seal is probably blown out.

How many miles do you have on the Contour ???

On the CD4E trasaxle anything major requires almost a complete overhaul.
The transaxle has to be removed, torn down, rebuilt, and then re-installed.
Your R&R labor is going to be in the area of $500 - 800 alone.
Most shops will rebuilt your CD4E for about $1500 - 2000.

The Pump Seal is a MAJOR problem with these transazles.
The seal was redesigned in the 1996 year
but they still tend to go when there is a spike in the oil pressure.
The pressure spike is cause by the defective valves in the valve body.

If you've been driving the Contour around unaware of this happening until you hear the hiss,
then chances are the whole transaxle will need to be rebuilt.

And if the transaxle has NEVER been serviced at all, I would say
your chances of getting away with this inexpensively are small to nil...

I'm sorry to have to burst your bubble but I'd rather tell you the worst case
and you be prepared for it, than give you a false hope and you still end up getting the worst case...

What year Contour do you have. There were problems with some of the earlier one's.

PUMP PLATE CD4E UPDATED 97-UP $41.37 (Bulkpart.com)

This pump plate can be used on earlier models, if you use the updated pump gasket, which I am having a had time running down. But that should give a small idea of price. If you can do the work yourself, I would budget something along the lines of $100 to $150 to do the job. Reason I go that high is because you never know what you are going to need and when you are going to need it.

If a shop was to do it, forget it. They will not just replace the pump. Find one that will and i will be amazed. That doesn't mean that you cannot ask around, but all I'm saying is, "Don't get your hopes up.". Also, it will be a lot more than $150 to do the job too.

{EDIT}
I just went and reread your first post. You state that there is grinding as well. It could be that, as Roadrunner suggested, your pump seal is blowen - which would cause you to loose pressure to some of the internals. It's also possible that that the grinding you hear is the pump gears. Sonnax makes a replacement CD4E Pump Gear Set. Not sure how much it is though.
{/EDIT}

If it is making noise and grinding now, get your Service Manager to ride in the car with you.
Do whatever it takes to get them in the car with you.

When they hear it and experience it, they will have to do something.
They just can't sit around and wait for it to fail.
Even if they do agree that there is a problem, it will need to be documented
while your coverage is effective so the repairs will be covered.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THIS IS DONE.
IF THEY REFUSE TO DO IT CALL FORD CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND CALL YOUR FORD EXTENDED WARRANTY SERVICE.

Have you ever SERVICED the transaxle ???
The Owners Manual says it needs service every 30,000 miles,
but it really needs service every 12,000 miles.
If the service has NEVER BEEN DONE, they will have grounds to deny you the warranty coverage.
