The pump seal is probably blown out.
How many miles do you have on the Contour ???
a shy bit under 65.5k
is that relatively cheap to be fixed?
What year Contour do you have. There were problems with some of the earlier one's.
PUMP PLATE CD4E UPDATED 97-UP $41.37 (Bulkpart.com)
This pump plate can be used on earlier models, if you use the updated pump gasket, which I am having a had time running down. But that should give a small idea of price. If you can do the work yourself, I would budget something along the lines of $100 to $150 to do the job. Reason I go that high is because you never know what you are going to need and when you are going to need it.
If a shop was to do it, forget it. They will not just replace the pump. Find one that will and i will be amazed. That doesn't mean that you cannot ask around, but all I'm saying is, "Don't get your hopes up.". Also, it will be a lot more than $150 to do the job too.
{EDIT}
I just went and reread your first post. You state that there is grinding as well. It could be that, as Roadrunner suggested, your pump seal is blowen - which would cause you to loose pressure to some of the internals. It's also possible that that the grinding you hear is the pump gears. Sonnax makes a replacement CD4E Pump Gear Set. Not sure how much it is though.
