is that relatively cheap to be fixed?

On the CD4E trasaxle anything major requires almost a complete overhaul.
The transaxle has to be removed, torn down, rebuilt, and then re-installed.
Your R&R labor is going to be in the area of $500 - 800 alone.
Most shops will rebuilt your CD4E for about $1500 - 2000.

The Pump Seal is a MAJOR problem with these transazles.
The seal was redesigned in the 1996 year
but they still tend to go when there is a spike in the oil pressure.
The pressure spike is cause by the defective valves in the valve body.

If you've been driving the Contour around unaware of this happening until you hear the hiss,
then chances are the whole transaxle will need to be rebuilt.

And if the transaxle has NEVER been serviced at all, I would say
your chances of getting away with this inexpensively are small to nil...

I'm sorry to have to burst your bubble but I'd rather tell you the worst case
and you be prepared for it, than give you a false hope and you still end up getting the worst case...
