alright, im new here, ive been looking around for about a month getting all my questions answered, and i must say, this is the single best site for contours ive ever seen. wow i searched around a ton and found this, and up until this point every single one of my questions have been answered perfectly and ive found more out about my car than i ever thought. the problem is, i have a question that suddenly i cant find an answer for. this is my first car, and i havent ever done much work on cars so if this is a real simple question, then i guess you can laugh all ya want

my question is whether or not you can adjust the height of brake pedals, and for that matter gas pedal too if possible. im sure its simple, but i searched the entire forum (new and archives) and cant seem to find anything. any help would be greatly appreciated, and again, for whoever runs this site and forums, amazing job, i love it.

also, if needed, i have a 96 atx GL w/ 2.0 zetec.

There's no way to adjust them that I know of. I suppose anything is possible with a hammer and a torch, but there's no easy adjustment, like some of the newer "luxury" cars have.

the booster pushrod should be threaded. You can adjust the clevis on the threads and change the pedal height. Some adjustments will also have to made to the brake light switch so as not to use the switch as a pedal stop, because that will lock the brakes up if it's not adjusted. The gas pedal will need to be removed and the arm bent to match the height of the brake pedal.

NEGATIVE!!! do not mess with the booster input rod. Trust me, it is sooo not worth the risks involved.

If you really want to change the pedal heights, use some aftermarket pedal pad covers, and make sure you mount them securely.

alright, no problem, like i said, if its not feasable no big deal.. and the thing is, i would want to change the height pretty significantly. my brake pedal feels like its about 2 inches higher than my gas pedal, and sometimes my foot will catch on the side of it when i move to brake. its nothing serious, its just annoying, and i guess if i need to brake quickly, it could be serious.

as of right now, i was more curious to see if i could adjust to get the right distance so its a comfortable distance for my arms at the steering wheel and same for my legs to the pedals. its an automatic so i dont need it perfect cause i dont race or anything like that, just my daily driver to classes.

thanks for the info everyone, ill be around, probably asking more inexperienced questions so i can learn some more.

Actually, if it were adjusted the way you want, you would have the exact opposite problem, which could be a lot worse. You could unintentionally hit the gas pedal when trying to brake. Audi's pedal package was like this int he early 80's, and the lawsuits they were involved in almost killed the company. Jeep also got into some serious hot water over this same issue awhile back too.

If it helps, keep in mind that my current "day job" responsibilties include design and release for brake pedals, brake boosters, and adjustable pedal systems for a number of Ford vehicles.

I thought you were trying to raise pedals..never lower the brake pedal..it will hit the floor before doing any braking.

And about audi's problem...thats why every car manufacturer requires you to step on the brake before you can shift out of park

well i guess you are right, what i would like to do is more raise the gas pedal to match the brake, or just less of a difference.

but like rara said, and that i never thought of, is accidentally hitting the gas when trying to brake. thats a good point and ill just stick with what ive got for now..no biggie.

thanks again for all the info everyone!
