From personal experience I can say that the stock pump will fail. My wife's Contour is a '95 and she is the original owner. The pump died at 163,000 miles. That's a pretty good lifespan for a pump, but the impeller did fail. It never lost coolant. If you have a Zetec and you start to get cooling problems, get the system checked,(unless of course you can do it yourself). edit Also, having owned one since new, I would not say that Zetecs naturally run hot. Again, we had no problems until the pump failed. The guage has read warm since, but the thermostat still opens around 200 degrees. I would suggest that people check their temp sending unit and the rest of the system before casting judgement on the Zetec.
