Hi,newbee but must say this board rocks.

AC quit working in my 'tour. It wouldn't blow at all, no heat
no ac, no fan, when in the ac position the compressor doesn't kick on and I thought I had traced the problem to the switch panel (the thing with the knobs). Well today got a new one and it still doesn't work. I've read the articles on the resistor going bad so I took the one out of the car but then realized I don't know how to test it to see if it is bad. It's sitting in front of me right now. The resistor is grey in color. It seems to have a hair line crack the the middle of it's width. What else should I be looking for??? How do I test it?? Also, could this cause the blower to quit working??

Check the resistor for continuity through both ends, if you have none then its no good. From what I can see its pretty simple system. The blower motor relay is engergized and sends 12 volts to the blower motor positive wire and ground comes from a stud behind the right front kick panel and through the resistor according to what speed setting your fan is on...so check for power at the blower motor with your test light or meter and if you have power there then also check the other wire going to the blower motor for ground. A bad resistor could be a problem and not allow ground to enable the blower fan. I just checked another drawing and because your not geting the AC compressor running I would say its the blower motor relay.

Blower Motor Relay?? Where is this at and how to test it?? It was funny the way the AC would act. One day every setting would work then the next nothing would work.

I had a 'blower-heater resistor' recalled on my Contour GL '97. I went directly to the dealer and they did the whole thing absolutely FREE in less than two hours ~ now it works perfectly. I got the letter in mail about 6 months ago. Maybe you should ask the dealer if '98's part is recalled as well...
