Originally posted by MrComputer: The part I purchased is exactly like the one shown on the left in photo #4 above. It is the white end clamp (as shown in the photo) for the Focus SVT. The parts with the square ends for the Contour are no longer available and have been obsoleted by Ford. What pisses me off is the fact that they still offer the complete cable assembly with both cables, all 4 ends, and the bulkhead rubber fitting. Cost is over $160 US so screw that!
I'm confused.
Focus shift tower requires the 98 cables.
The 98 cables are discontinued and nowhere to be found (I've looked ).
What costs $160?

The $160 (approximate price) as for the complete cable assembly with both shift cables, all ends/clamps, and the bulkhead boot/fitting.
My local dealer has them in stock, we looked at one.

That's for the 99-> shift cables which wont work with the Focus shift tower.
If you find the 98 shift cables, let me know - I need a set!

The cables have the square ends at the clamps. I thought that was the type you need for the 1998? Mine is a 1999 model and has the square end cables from the factory.

I'm not 100% sure when the cable change occurred - Maybe it was sometime during the production of 99s. From an old post: Originally posted by SVT PETE: FYI I pulled some cables from a 98 SVT to see if they were different from my 00 cables. (Of course the cables are busted.)
My 00 cables are thin, round metal ends. My 00 cables ends have small, round entry points.
The 98 cables have large, sqaure/rectangular plastic ends. The 98 cable ends have square entry points.
The 98 cable ends are the same as the Focus cable ends except for the "grommet" part that pops onto the shift tower.
Bill Jenkins and I have searched everywhere for the older cables and no one has them.

I still don't understand the problem I'm having with the Focus square end clamps. The grommet on them will not go onto the metal nipples at the transaxle no matter how hard you try to push them on. Even after removal of the metal washer in the clamp you still have to try REALLY hard to get them on. Is there something I'm still missing?
BTW, the Ford dealer that has the cable assembly I referred to is Brandon Ford in Brandon, Florida. I looked at one there this past Monday (October 11th).

Does your metal pin into the transaxle look like the one in picture 2?
If yes then you need the clamp from picture 1, NOT the one from picture 4.

Yes, the metal pin on the transaxle looks like the one in picture 2. It is the old style Contour setup. However, everybody keeps telling me these clamps are no longer available.
That is why I've tried to adapt the later Focus clamp. After knocking out the metal washer, it can be pushed onto the shaft. The nylon retaining washer I'm using should hold it securely on the pin. Price at my local Ford dealer was $26.40 for the white clamp; I can only assume this is the list price.

There are multiple Focus ends. As listed earlier in this thread, these are the part numbers used to get the white and black clamps pictured above to work with the style of pin also shown above.

I've tried searching for those part numbers and so far have been unable to find either of them. Where did you obtain yours from?
I don't have the part number for the clamp I purchased here at work but I will check when I get home tonight. The only white clamps I've seen that will work on that style pin is the original Contour parts.
