Ok the key bit, the part of the cable that goes into the plastic end is not threaded. Is that good or bad? The plastic end that failed is of the orange-spring variety, how does it come off?????

Evidently pressing the spring and giving a tug isn't enough!

Look at the pic. To the left of the orange, grooved "retainer" there is the little white piece by itself. That keeps the orange, grooved retainer in place.

You'll need a small flathead to pry on it and push the orange, grooved retainer out of the cable end "chamber" to get the cable end off the cable.

You'll understand how the whole cables and cable ends mess works once you get the replacements.
