it's the plastic cable end that failed; specifically the grommet as it is missing completely. Using SVT ST PETE's photo I'll point out what's gone.
Ok the key bit, the part of the cable that goes into the plastic end is not threaded. Is that good or bad? The plastic end that failed is of the orange-spring variety, how does it come off?????
Evidently pressing the spring and giving a tug isn't enough!
