Yes, thanks! I'm going to get in there this weekend to see what cables I have; it sounds like I need to be hoping for the "unimproved" variety.

Ford went from the beefier cable ends in the 98/98.5 to thinner, flimsier ends in the 99/00. But went back to beefier cable ends on the Focus. Damn Ford.
More decontenting for us COntours I guess.
Good luck!

After I did the clutch on mine, one of my shifter cables popped off. Of course it happened while I was 200 miles away from home. I was able to get to the cables by turning the wheels all the way to the right, and reached my hand all the way into the cavity to re-seat the cable. Just thought this would help instead of jacking it up and all that jazz. Good luck, hopefully it's only worn bushings or the like. Sean

bigmoney, what was the diagnosis? I opened up the 3 liter a bit yesterday evening and the 99/00 cables were custom fitted onto the Focus shift tower went. I managed to coast into an elementary school parking lot. Put some slightly broken 98 cables in - shifting is very poor due to the break. FYI: The cables are a major PITA to replace.

Haven't gotten in there yet; will do it Saturday or Sunday to order parts on Monday (I hope!). My hope is that all I'll need is one of the plastic ends. Been driving all week using 1st, 3rd, and 5th because 2nd and 4th are very iffy to find.
Man I really sympathize with your problem. Can you get new cables with the "unimproved" ends?

The newer "revised" ends 99/00 repalced the older ends (needed/compatible to do Focus shift tower conversion).
The older ends have not been available for quite some time.
Note: If you need to completely pull the cables, be very careful putting the new ones in. Due to the size of the cables and the hole it goes through into engine bay from the cabin, and the way they must be contorted to get the ends to the shift tower, the cables can be very easily broken.

it's the plastic cable end that failed; specifically the grommet as it is missing completely. Using SVT ST PETE's photo I'll point out what's gone. Ok the key bit, the part of the cable that goes into the plastic end is not threaded. Is that good or bad? The plastic end that failed is of the orange-spring variety, how does it come off????? Evidently pressing the spring and giving a tug isn't enough!

On a whim I ordered the two ends, I think. These are the part numbers... XS8Z-7412-GA F7RZ-7412-AA
Still need to know how to get them off and on though.

Hacksaw, maybe? Just joking, I really wish I could help out here, but I have no idea how to help since I have no experience with the situation. So I figured I would just throw in a joke. And a bad one at that.

bigmoney,
Look at the pic. To the left of the orange, grooved "retainer" there is the little white piece by itself. That keeps the orange, grooved retainer in place.
You'll need a small flathead to pry on it and push the orange, grooved retainer out of the cable end "chamber" to get the cable end off the cable.
You'll understand how the whole cables and cable ends mess works once you get the replacements.
