My hope is that all I'll need is one of the plastic ends. Been driving all week using 1st, 3rd, and 5th because 2nd and 4th are very iffy to find. Man I really sympathize with your problem. Can you get new cables with the "unimproved" ends? -- 1999 SVT #220 -- In retrospect, it was all downhill from here. RIP, CEG.
