Iā??ve had this problem for a while now: the car shakes violently, loses power, and loses speed as well. At starts 15 or so minutes into the drive [not when the car is cold] and mostly at high RPMs.

I was convinced that it was the fuel pump and I was ready to replace it when I decided to stop by a mechanic before. BAM ā?? the guy went on a freeway with me [and it shook like it always does] and told me that itā??s transmission! So the first thing we do is change the transmission fluid which was overdue for a change anyway. I drive home happy thinking that the problem is solved. Then I go on a freeway in a couple of hours and the same freaginā?? thing happens as before. Carā??s got 87,000 miles on it and it was well taken care of. Any ideas? God, please donā??t say trannyā?¦

Do you know if your CEL (check engine light) is on? If it is, get the code read by a fellow CEGer with a scan tool or go to the dealer and pay to have it done - sup'm like $50. come back here with any codes that are read.

It is possible the problem is a sensor that has become heat sensitive, or the catalytic converter at the front of your 4 cylinder engine has become clogged (not likely), or you're having mis-firing problems when the car warms up. You may indeed, as you suggest, have a problem with the fuel pump.

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter, air filter, plugs & wires?

You could also have you CEL(Check Engine Light) read for free at any Auto Zone. Good luck with this. I have no idea what exactly is causing this, but it doesn't sounds like a transmission problem honestly. Losing speed and shaking is usually caused by something with the engine or wheels, but I don't think it would be the tranny. I could be wrong though, but I would take it to another mechanic, or maybe there's a CEGer close enough that could come look at your car.

Good call on the Auto Zone Renee. Unfortunately, I've read more than once that California requires only dealers pull OBD-II codes. AZ & others are not allowed to tread on dealer territory in CA.

Nope, Autozone do pull codes in California... They lend you the tool.

I'm taking the car to the mechanic on Monday - he'll actually hook up the computer to it and see what's really wrong because the car is doing the same thing in 'netural' [nothing to do with transmission].

I do have a check engine code - P0402 [high EGR flow].. Could that have anything to do with it? I changed the fuel filter two weeks ago; haven't looked at the air-filter yet.

Well that bites. I am so glad we left California. Heck, if Autozone will lend you the OBD thing, take it, it's not hard to do. You plug that sucker up on the left, just below the steering wheel, turn the car on, and wait for it to do it's thing.

P0402. This is sounding more like a clogged cat. You may also have a bad DPFE because of it.
