The speedometer on my daughter's 95 Contour is off. This is 2.5 V6 with an automatic. At highway speeds it reads low by 5-7 miles per hour. In other words, if the speedo says that I am going 65, I am actually going 70-72 mph. Has anyone else seen this? One point is that (I believe) the 95 models are the only Contours with a speedometer cable. In the later years, its all electronic. How can I correct this?

One way to fix the prob is to take the gauge cluster apart and pull the speedo needle off, then just ride next to someone at a agreed upon speed then just stab the needle in once at that speed. There's probably other ways but that's the easiest I can think of. Good luck.

Did you change tire/wheel sizes? Mine is off 2-3, reads higher that really moving. Most cars tested by magazines are like this. Houston PD places stupid radar signs on the side & medium of roads to show you your speed. Mine was showing 38 when the speedo displayed 40mph. My Tour was made in March 95 and it has an electronic driven display; no speedometer cable to the dash.

I have two 95 Contours. One is electronic the other is manual. The car with the manual speedometer cable was made in Nov 94

The tires are the same size as original - the speedometer has been wrong since we have owned the car. The reason that I am asking is that I am having problems with the transmission and the code reader says that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is faulty. I removed the VSS and have a new one on order. Mine is an early model 95 and the speedo cable goes through the VSS. I thought that this would be a good time to correct the speedometer if it was possible. Thanks for everyone's help. BTW, my daughter has one speeding ticket and at least one warning. She thinks that she can drive 8-10 mph over posted speeds (she's really going probably 15-16 over)
