So that's not on the Amsoil site? Sorry, but I would like to read this. I went from Mobil 1 (for the winter) back to dino oil (for the summer), and am thinking about switching back soon! However, Amsoil and Redline synthetics are available at Canadian Tire here in Canada, and if I can save a bit by changing drain intervals, while improving protection, I would like to do so.

Yeah, the Walmart brand is made and packaged by one the big boys perhaps QS or a few others. It probably has a Group III oil base which is the same as Castrol and most others, but I can't be sure. Hey, we are driving Contours here, not Ferraris, so any Synthetic should be good enough!! Besides the Super tech meets Corvette and Viper specs, so it should be more than satisfatory. Coincidentally, one of my local Walmart was selling the 5 quart synthetic jugs for ONLY $8!!! Yeah, $8! That's cheaper than mineral based oil. I bought a few, needless to say. One guy there was buying regular Valvoline for over $9 (about synthetics, he said "Oh no, I never mess with that stuff!"). On a side note, AMSOIL does not synthesize ANY of their oil components, they only buy the ingredients from others and blend everything in a big mixing tank!

Total Base Number (TBN) is the measurement of a lubricantâ??s reserve alkalinity. The higher a motor oilâ??s TBN, the more effective it is in handling contaminants and reducing the corrosive effects of acids for an extended period of time. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil has a higher TBN than Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 Motor Oil. They say nothing out performs Mobil 1. Wrong! Hey, its your car and motor oil is the most important thing to its performance and reliability. Spend your money wisely..

It is extremely UNLIKELY that the Mobil 1 was the cause of your engine failure (whatever it was).

It's funny you'd mention TBN, as that is what may ultimately kill amsoil at the next test interval ot two.

The change that worries me the most is the change in oil weight from 30 to 40. The Duratec is not known for having the best oil passage design, and this could cause issues.

Well I've never seen Amsoil around here in Advance or Auto Zone, unless CarQuest or NAPA has it. I might try the Super Tech on the wife's Grand Caravan since its on a hard lived 114,000 miles. But if Synthetic cleans it out like it's supposed to then I might be adding alot more oil alot more often in that case. I guess I could try Mobil 1 once and check the oil every week and see how good it looks and if the oil retains well.

5.85/qt. I'd rather go w/Mobil 1 from WallyWorld and I could get it same day. M1 is 4.77/qt here. Thanks for the link though, I'll check out some other stuff on their online store.
