Was checking some old posts about motor oil. Since the cost of Synthetics is so high, anyone thought of or is using Wal-Marts Super Tech Syn oil? I'm trying to comprimise with Castrol syntec blend but saw some posts to the effect that it's a waste!

Not my area of expertise, but while there must be differences between synthetic oils, I'd assume a cheap full synthetic is still better than a cheap synthetic blend.

Im not familar with walmart brand....but what i can tell you from experience and the research im doing (im creating the FAQ for Oils in this section) is that Mobil 1, and Amsoil are the 2 best synthetics for our cars.

As a trial, FMR12B (Californa Moderator) has been using the Walmart brand oil for a few years now with no problems....But personaly, when it comes to the problmes with these motors, i would stick to Mobil one if you can....I know costco sells cases and Gallon sizes cheaper than you would find at a retail store.

EDIT: Castrol Syn Blend is a waste...you paing more money than dyno oil and only gettting the same protection....Thye reason its not worth the money is because it is a mix of synthetic and dyno oil (hence blend) so in actuallity your only getting the same (maybe a little more) amount of protectiona s dyno oil...not worth the money IMO.

Does the super tech have that little seal of approval on the back of the bottle? If so, I'd say it's ok. If there's no seal (like on say "Valu Time" motor oil ) I'd steer clear. You should research who makes the oil for Walmart. That'll tell you something.

Here is some help on the various oils and how they compare in Standard Performance tests .. I would be reluctant to use any lubricating fluid without knowing the composition of the oil..

You can actually save money by using a synthetic such as AMSOIL which can give you up to 36,000 miles (or 12 months)between oil drains.. with improved performance and wear protection over the 3,000 mile stuff.. and believe me this isn't snake oil..

except amsoil looks to be getting its butt kicked in a head to head with mobil1 - it turned into a 10w40 viscosity in under 8k miles!

Sorry, to get a little off subject, but i found it intresting that you lost your car while running Mobil 1. Your the first person (and right now the only person) that i know that has had any problems with the oil.

I lost my previous motor on Mobil 1...but that was due to being a quart low...and not due to the oil....was there any abnormal wear on any of the internals?????\

please PM me...the reason i am asking is becasue im writing up an FAQ for oil in the Maintanence section, and you the first person i have found to actually talk down about Mobil 1.

In the last two updates, and i was wrong it's 5-40 not 10-40:

Quote:

A road trip caused us to miss our sample by a hair over 100 miles. At this point the oil looks black, like used oil ought to. It also continues to thicken up, and is now officially a 5W40 oil instead of the 5W30 we poured in there. Frankly, this annoys the heck out of us -- if we wanted a 40 weight oil in there, we would have bought a 40 weight oil -- and we would have quit right here, except it's not worth the din of hate mail we'd get. So, we'll see what happens, particularly whether TBN manages to rally, 'cause at the moment it's dropping like an acid eater. Wear, however, continues to be for all practical purposes inconsequential. A good oil, yes, but a long-termer? We'll see.

Quote:

Finally, it took a while, but here we are at another sample. Not much new to report. Everything's stable at the moment, except for TBN, which continues its spiral downward. The laboratory says 1.9 is still good, but if it doesn't level off soon, then Amsoil will be done in 2000 miles -- even allowing for the 40-weight viscosity. Interesting that Amsoil seems to not display the TBN boost from make-up oil that Mobil 1 exhibited -- or if it is exhibiting the boost, then God help anyone whose engine doesn't use oil! No easy way to know, really, without complicated tests on multiple engines.
