I constructed a homemade CAI/heatshield for my KKM. Cost about $13 total and wow! The new sound is really cool, and the engine pulls much better through the whole powerband. Seeing as how it has been in the mid and upper 80s recently here, I can say that it works. I get no heat soak at all. Instructions will follow, but here is a pic for now. It allow cold air to be drawn in through the fenderwell while retaining the high-flow characteristics of the S&B filter.

Very odd looking. But very cool. Looking forward to the how=to. But one question isnt the idea behind the "open air filter" to have some of it open? Otherwise you back at the stock SVT air box? Just a question tell me if i'm wrong.

Get some hard numbers on a dyno with the filter on and off.

The point of an open-element air filter is you get more surface area to draw in more air. The downside is that it sucks in all the hot engine air. With this, you still get the high-flow characteristics of the S&B filter but don't get any of the heat soak.
I am going to write up a how-to soon. But it only takes about an hour and $13.

Well, I'm assuming he deleted the stock intake resonator, and ran a "clean" tube to the fenderwell? Also, remember he started with an early 'tour, which had the square filter box. Yeah, we benefit by retrofitting the SVT airbox, but he got around that need, at least. Difference in money spent is considerable.

RogerB is right....I yanked the intake resonator and it is now drawing from the fenderwell. It is cheaper and easier than the SVT airbox and less restrictive. The new sound is interesting...still kinda deep like the KKM, but with a bit of a performance whine/wooshing noise. Will try and get soundclips up.
