My dad swears by Slick50...I have never used it but it kept his 1980 Ford F150 running like a clock for about 20 years and close to 400K km's. I think the engine still runs good...too bad the doors and the box rusted off

I fell into the Z-max trap once years ago. I put it in, then at the next oil change never put it back. I just don't feel comfortable with info-mercial stuff in my engine. Found no signs of increased millage, engine running cooler, blah, blah blah.
Then about a year later I saw this "FTC filed suit in U. S. District Court seeking to halt false and misleading advertising for zMax auto additives." I run mobil 1 synthetic now it's cheaper and better.

Additives don't help your engine, unless maybe your engine has a leak and the additive seals it. A good oil is much better than a good additive. And a good additive will hurt your good oil if you add it.

I used Slick50 in my motorcycle for awhile. When I took off the valve cover to adjust the valves, I saw lots of little white bits that looked like thin sheets of Teflon stuck to the rocker arms, inside the valve cover, etc. Some of the white bits were up to 1/4 inch, so I was worried about them clogging the oil filter and oil passages. I stopped using it.

Any true synthetic oil (5w-30). I use mobil1 because it's easily available.

Only additive I use is a cleaner/solvent for very dirty engines. I've seen some real cruddy insides on some cars. One test I use when looking at used cars is to stick your finger inside the cam/valve cover and rub the underside of cover. If the cover is dirty on the inside the rest of the engine is dirty too. I usually reject the car because oil changes were neglected. I helped a lot of folks out over the years with "tune ups" and when I heard a lifter clattering, or found dirty insides, I added a can of CD-2 or something like it after first changing the oil. Modern engine oil has plenty of additives to maintain a clean engine if it is changed when needed. Not when the book says or when you have a coupon for a special at Jiffy Lube.
