The flimsy response to your search was because I don't believe it's been done. If it has, it hasn't been posted about.
While I did not try to polish them, I started to by using paint stripper to get started. The face surface of the rim is not smooth at all and was very pitted and rough under the paint. After seeing that, I decided I'd wait until I had more time to continue (I was supposed to take pics of the wheels for someone, too
