Heres the situation:
((For a 1998 Contour SVT))
1. Yesterday driving on the highway and Gas Light pops on. I didn't have my wallet on me and so i couldn't pull over and fill up... And i drove for an additional 12-15 miles with it on. Once i got home i filled it up. Drove well for the whole day no problems.
2. Next day, car won't start. Car wouldn't turn over just a clicking noise. Jumped the car and car started, i let it run idle for 5 minutes.
3. Went out for a test drive, working okay. Found a straight away and gunned it. Once the car reached 4,000 RPMs car bucked/stalled/hesitated which forced me to lay off the pedal, i then heard a humming sound like a "oooooooh." Simultaneous with the stalling was the GAS LIGHT Flashed on. Got home, tried starting and now it won't.
-starter was replaced March 2002
-battery relaced May 2002
Any ideas guys?

that "ooooooo" sound, was it coming from under the rear seat? That's the fuel pump.
When you turn the key before starting, do you hear the fuel pump priming?

all i hear is a clicking noise... The car has no attempt to roll over. I don't know what the "priming" sound sounds like... can you describe it for me? could it be because i drove with a rather "empty tank?"

HUMM.... Sounds like it might be the fuel pump....im in San jose...im going to be at a local StarBucks off of Blossom Hill RD and Santa Theresa (off of 87 freeway) in the albertsons shopping center...if you can make it me and a few CEGers that hang out can take a look at it.

when you turn the key to the on position, without turning it all the way to start the motor you should hear a muted humming sound from the rear. That's the fuel pump pressurising the fuel lines.

I'd agree, sounds like you have a bad fuel pump.

So fuel pump it is??? Man i remember reading about fuel pumps about 2 years ago... did it have anything to do with driving with the gas light on too long? Thanks for the replies guys. Is having that replaced going to cost an arm and a leg and another arm?

it cost me about 300 bucks parts included...(maybe a little over) you can actuall find a cheaper fuel pump at pep boys or something and have it installed if you want to save a little more money.

me and my dad are on it as we speak, car doesn't start it must be jumped everytime in order to get to start. I dont' understand why i it has to be jumped in order for it to start. can the fuel pump cause that? i'm a dummie when it comes to automotive common sense. again it stalls ONLY during agressive driving above 4,500 RPMs and the gas light flashes on. Other than that the car drives okay aside from the JUMPING OF THE CAR every friggin time you start it.

Do you mean you have to jump it likes it's dead? Or does it turn over, just not start?
