is my timing self adjusting if i disconnect the battery? or do i have to take it to a shop?
also, can midas do this? i would assume any shp that change the timing belt cna adjust the timing for me. its not far off, cause its running great...but its far enough off to knock, so its causing damage.

I will never enter a Midas again. Find a REAL mechanic.

Static timing is set by the timing belt, there is some room for adjustment but it is not self-adjusting.
Ignition timing is not adjustable except through a chip or the learned memory. The learned memory is dumped during an extended power loss.
Pinging is usually due to a lack of EGR, running too hot, or a lean mixture on acceleration. Sometimes crossfiring plug wires cause an inconsistent knock. A harder knock is usually mechanical.

That is a good list of possible things that can contribute to ping. I wish to add tow things. Carbon build up in the cylinders and fuel quality.
Before doing anything else, try other brands of 87 octane fuel. You may find that it is nothing more than sub-standard fuel.
Excessive carbon build up in the cylinders can contribut to ping in at least three ways. Added compression from the extra material in the combustion chambers, hot spots from the carbon contribution to pre ignition, and a lean mixture from restricted injectors (as well as restricted valves). A really good injector cleaner added to the tank may do wonders for your performance. Even more help would come from doing a decarbon processive. Berryman B12 seems to be the product of choice for decarboning. If you look around here with a search you should find the instructions on how to do this.

i dont think carbon build up is the problem...it has had fuel injector cleaner every 3K of its life since it was new, ( i knew the previous owner). but anything is possible, im on my way to disconnect the battery fo rth enight tonight...we will see.
also, how long of a power loss? 6 hrs enough?

how aobut just a few seconds.. that's all it takes to get the check engine light to go out.. you then run it around for more than two recycle trips and the light will come back on.. i guess this is how long it takes the computer to re-learn how to operate the engine????

I have learned that pinging could be due to arching in the plug boots if no dielectric grease was used. Plug gap is listed by Ford @.052-.056. If the gap is slightly over or under this could contribute. Vacuum leaks from intake- around MAF, accordian tube, PCV hoses, TB gasket, UIM, and LIM. Ford Racing wires are supposedly crap. If the IAT or MAF are dirty or faulty hiccups and pinging will occur. And get this _- If the PS pressure sensor is faulty or there is a leak in one of your PS lines your engine will hiccup and or ping. Another thing to keep in mind is that if your car is 4 years or older then the gas cap and/ or sending unit gasket could be leaking. The fuel pump strainer also gets clogged with debris and must be cleaned. Any of these things can contribute to pinging or hicupping.
