On my car the fans come on @ 211 degrees. That is like I said Just above the "L". As for overheating though? Make sure there is no air in the system. I solved my problem by changing the Thermostat housing and all the sensors. Easy repair and it can be done and cleaned up from in under an hour. Shouldn't cost more then $150 if you do it yourself. Should really be less so shop around for the parts if you choose to go this route. Again. I'm making the assumption this is the Zetec.
