Is there any 'easy' way to convert the cable shifter to a rod shifter? This is for a 99 SVT BTW

I know that the rod shifter was an improvement on the Taurus SHO, but on the Contour, the cable shifter is an improvement over the rod shifter.

I don't know how hard it would be to convert. Someone that converted from rod to cable posted that it was extremely difficult because the car was never intened for the upgrade and that he would never try it again.

You are welcome to try it if you want, but you would probably be the first. You would end up with a longer throw.

Just remember that by being first, you would be a pioneer. They say the easiest way to recognize a poineer is from the arrows sticking out his back.

I always thought that the rod was a more "direct" feel. The cables felt too smooth. Why would the cables be an upgrade?

I thought I heard of somone doing it in the past... I guess not. A rod system elimintates that 'rubber band effect' when you are shifting quick. That and it just feels more precise.

I guess if you like that rubbery disconnected feel. Also worn 3rd gear synchros. You don't hear about pre98's with tranny issues. Hmm wonder why? If I bought an post 98 I'd probably convert it. The tranny has to be pulled I believe. It's not like the SHO's. The only reason Ford changed is because with the rod you have more "road feel". i.e. vibration. Who would want that?
